It's only relatively recently that chicks have expressed interest in video games in large numbers, probably because it's now more socially acceptable or because the industry has tried to be more inclusive in regard to girls, or I don't fucking know, but I'd assume that slowly but steadily the ratios will even out eventually.

I rememeber back in the early 2000s, the idea of a girl being on a video game forum was treated like the second coming of Led Zeppellin. We've come a long way since then, although a lot of forums are still like that.

I guess it would expand away from the glass, making it easier to open.

"Away from" doesn't really make any sense, I can't figure out why the metal would be biased like that. I guess its because the cumulative radial expansion of the disc at the top exceeds the counter-expansion of the rim?

pretty much. I'm making a conscious effort to post more about how I feel about subjects. not just women related ones either. instead of just watching I need to speak. and there's also this weird thing happening where males invade girlgaf and ask questions.

Assuming even heating every finite element of the lid is expanding the same amount. The arrows are of equal size. There will be no bias in direction so the lip of the lid will also expand in towards the glass, making it tighter, which was my first thought. But the top of the lid is also expanding outwards and since there are more elements (arrows) in it it because its bigger ends up expanding more then the lip contracts

I learned a trick from my mom where I just take one of those dull dinner knives and hit the lid 2-3 times, do the same on the opposite side, then voila! Lid can be opened.

As for internet forums, tumblr is very much a female orientated site and it's pretty damn geeky. Maybe more women hang out there because they feel alienated from forums? I have seen such sentiments expressed by a lot of women on that site.

I think you've put your finger on it. Unfortunately, most gaming forums have always been boys' clubs. Because Tumblr is a space that openly embraces feminism and tolerance of all types, it's very welcoming to groups who are marginalized online.

Also, because Tumblr is so huge, it's a much better way to meet people who share your interests. And the fact that it lets you create and cultivate your own blog allows for a completely different dynamic than a traditional forum.
