I think they should have used Bacchus as the inspiration for Satan, that fucking guy knew how to party. Party Diety Satan is kicked out of Heaven after one too many all eon long parties that left Heaven a mess but his Old Man God ain't having none of that and banishes him to the place where all the cool kids go, Hell!

Basically its like if Bender was the Robot Devil in Robot Hell from Futurama is what I'm trying to get at.

Shoulda stuck with Ba'al

So "The Devil" as we know him isn't one particular character, he's essentially a folk character made up of different "evil" characters in mythology and religion, amalgamized (is that a verb?) through a particular Western lens. Over time he's also picked up a folk depiction of having horns and hooves because culture decided thats how he should look.

People in this thread have already mentioned Baphomet, but Baphomet isn't even a real god, just something that the church invented from Mesopotamian cultures and used to build a case against the Knights Templar. Basically we look to certain visual traits that we decide are evil (horns, hooves, tails, etc) and reinforce them by saying "Yes, this is what evil looks like".

Maybe in another thousand years our pop culture will become something far grander, even mystical and religious.

The devil will look like Cthulhu and will spout Walter White quotes while punting cats.

He is presumably associated with Greek god of shepherds, Pan.

Some might think Pan is sacrificing the goat but he's actually having sex with it, in case it wasn't clear.

Imagine some medieval monk finding that.

Actually satyrs are companions of Bacchus/Dionysus, so the concept is not far off. :P

Oh I know, I just think it'd be humorous if Satan's biggest issues is he just didn't know when to stop the party. Basically he's Bluto from Animal House to God's Dean Wormer and Hell is his Double Secret Probation

So you're saying the church basically makes shit up as they go along?

The word demonization comes from how other religions are treated in the bible and churches. Many competing gods would be described in demonic terms. Like the ancient equivalent of the blood libel. But many of the gods that romans loved were adopted into the roman church. Mary played a relatively small role in the bible but in the Catholic church she became a huge figure. Probably because she could be used to convince people who were very faithful to the goddess Isis that she was basically the same thing. Basically Christian religious imagery is pagan as fuck but some long dead guys decided what pagan gods were in and which ones were out.
