Why so slow, PSN Store?

Normally PSN was fast enough for me, but I didn't play in a loooong time. Yesterday I fired up the console and had to download the new software update - it tooks literally ages. Then a 600MB patch to a game - but since this was even slower (1% after an hour), I unplugged my PS3 and connected it directly to a cable. After restarting, the download was way faster (25% after 30 minutes). Taking into account I should have 10Mbps, still not really fast, but I don't mind.

blazing fast download on wireless here.

Are you behind a router? is the connection NAT2?

Yeah double check that stuff, I was getting terrible speeds for the longest time until I went through again and tweaked my internet settings. It's just about as fast, if not faster than my 360 now. Don't do the thing I did have the PS3 in a DMZ and still have NAT set to auto detect. That... seriously confused something in there.

Takes me about one hour to download 1 gig of stuff. Compared to Steam or XBLA, that same gig takes 15 mins.

Pretty sure this will be fixed when the next firmware (Codename: Rigby) comes out.

Wait, what? Is this true?

I've been having nothing but issues with my PSN connection since the outage. My download speeds are 56k level (sometimes 20-30k a second) and I get the 8002ad23 error all the time, it's an inevitability at this point. I've done literally everything that's been suggested. Turned off media server, static IP with manual DNS settings, DMZ'd on the router and all ports forwarded.

Once in a blue moon it'll be fine but usually it's shit and I can't do any multiplayer gaming.

They are using CDNs like Akamai and Limelight. Depends on ISP how close to your network they are and if your ISP has ponied up moneyz

Works full speed for me and always has.
Never has for me. Took me 3 HOURS to download the Saint's Row 3 character creator. Took me 10 minutes in Steam. The Steam version is actually a larger download, too.

It used to work like shit for me during the day and at full speed very late at night/early morning, but that was a general problem for my connection at the time

Now it works at full speed pretty much all the time

I guess it's based on your location

I download faster on PSN than Steam. 10mb connection yields 1.2Mbps real time for me. I also get a small boost when the download starts (thanks rogers) so a 60mb file takes something like 37 seconds.

Steam can go 1.2megs but a lot of time it jumps around at 600kbps while PSN never dips below max. Why Steam so slow?

10 bucks says you're using the router/modem combo they provide and you haven't forwarded ports

I don't see how forwarding ports would help. It's not like PSN downloads are P2P.

I haven't had any problems on the Belgian PSN. It actually maxes out my connection. Firmware downloads are slow though.

PSN is slow as hell for me. It always been, I've tried it with many different ISP's but always the same thing. That's my actual connection:

Wich is NOT slow at all, but the downloads from PSN, the on-line gaming and even the store browsing are slow, very slow. Downloads from the Xbox are really fast and so they are on the Mac or on the PC, so it's not an issue of the connection.

And, more important than that, the design of the store is awful, you can't download games to the console from a PC browser as you can do on the Xbox, you can't change your gamer ID, you can't... You can't do a lot o things you can do on other systems. Is it so difficult to improve PSN? Really?

Not to talk about those gigantic upgrades with so long installation times.

PSN is for me, with no doubt, the darkest spot on the PS3 experience. I really hope they'll make a complete revamp of the entire service some day.

PSN is super slow to download for me on fios in ny. XBL is lightspeed in comparison.

It's always been this way and one of those things I've learned to put up with. Its also one of those things that makes me question whether or not I should buy a PS4 eventually, since this seems to be the Sony way. I'm sick of downloading some demos and having to wait until the next day to play them. Downloads forever, installs are annoying. I want to play today, damnit.

:/

Completely agree, I'm not going on the next generation that way.

PS3 Proxy is your best friend, try it.

What is that?

Does anybody know why the store takes over 2 minutes to load for me? I have no issues with download speed or online play but this is always happening now. I have a wired connection ant type 2 NAT.

Same here. Sometimes it doesn't even start up so I have to keep backing out and entering until it finally loads. And when it does load everything works fine except for downloads. It has trouble downloading add-ons and games just as it does trying to load up the PS Store. I have to keep cancelling my download until it finally starts. I've had this problem since January of this year. Anyone know what's wrong?

Use your PC as a proxy when connecting to PSN, trigger download to get the link and continue downloading on your PC using your favorite download manager. Google it for detailed tutorials.

Yep pretty much my experience aswell. Took me 3 hours to download 500 meg worth of GT5 patches. Takes me 3 minutes to download 600 meg of Portal 2 DLC on Steam. I spent 6 hours downloading 7% of DC Universe Online on PS3. On PC was done in 2.5 hours. Took 1.5 hours trying to download V8 Superstars yesterday (was 1.5gig).

PSN is garbage and there is a reason why its free. I wouldn't even spend a $1 a year to use it.

I've always found it interesting how people can have such different experiences with PSN in terms of it's speed, personally I've never had a problem with it myself, I have it connect via wi-fi, nat type 2 in the DMZ and it maxes out my BB connection, I wonder what the problem is for some people?, I swear it must be the ISP's, in the UK I've heard of some ISP throttling PSN traffic, I'm with BT and the router they supply even has a profile for PSN to open the ports up.

At least in Spain, people is complaining about PSN speed with many different ISP's...

In my opinion, as it seems to be a random issue, it seems a server / network overload. It's free, so they can't invest so much money on datacenters as Microsoft does.

Probably a variety of reasons from router config/incompatibility to ISP connectivity to CDN coverage to Sony server sizing, depending on what you do.

Mine is super fast since my PS3 is on a corporate network. Everything literally finished within minutes.

Ok, I can't deal with it any more.

I have a very fast internet connection in San Francisco on Comcast. I get 4-5 megabytes per second when downloading on my PC, and around 3-4 on my 360.

On my PS3, I get about 200k/second. At best.

I'm currently downloading deBlob 2, and it's going at 150k/s. It says I have 980 minutes left on the download.

I've tried putting it in the DMZ on my router. I've tried plugging it directly into my router. I've tried setting up a proxy on my PC and having the PS3 use that instead. Nothing works.

What can I possibly do here? Is there a way I can download PSN content on my PC then transfer it to my PS3 through the network? That seems to be the only tangible solution at this point.

Before doing this you can go to Settings>Network Settings>Settings and Connection status list> write down whats listed in the Subnet Mask and Default Router sections so you have it for later on when you get to the IP Address Setting section.

First give your PS3 a static IP Go to Settings>Network Settings>Internet Connection Settings>Custom>(Select your type of connection)>Manual Settings>Speed and Duplex(Auto-Detect)>IP Address Setting(Manual)>(Fill in the information)>MTU(Automatic)>Proxy Server(Do not Use)>UPnP(Enable).

IP Address: set it to what you want to use(just make sure the IP you use isn't being used by another computer/device).
Subnet Mask: i think its usually 255.255.255.0
Default Router: whatever the IP of your router is
Primary DNS server: 208.67.220.220
Secondary DNS server: 208.67.222.222

Then go here http://portforward.com/ find your router, look for PlayStation Network then follow the instructions. That should help. After that put your PS3 in the DMZ.

I use the D-Link DGL-4500 router and I used the guide someone made over at the D-Link forums. So if anyone else has this router you can checkout that guide here http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=16330.0 They also have one for XBL.

Might as well post this here:

If you are able to connect to the Internet but cannot get into Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) game servers or network, it may be a firewall issue. A firewall is a security product that employs a combination of hardware and software to prevent unauthorized users or Internet traffic from gaining access into a private local area network (LAN) or personal computers. Many routers or modems have a firewall built in to them. In order to allow certain information to pass through, specific TCP and UDP ports on the router or modem will need to be opened in the router or modem's settings.
Below are the TCP and UDP (firewall) port numbers you will need to have open to connect online with PlayStation® products.

IMPORTANT:

Make sure to enable these TCP/UDP ports in BOTH directions and are entered into the TCP and UDP port fields in your router / modem.Contact your Internet Service Provider or router manufacturer for proper instructions on how to input port information for your network.

PlayStation®Network and SCEA Game Servers
All games published by SCEA (first-party) and the PlayStation Network may use the following ports for communication with SCEA (first-party) game servers:

TCP Ports: 80, 443, 465, 983, 5223, and 10070 - 10080UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658, and 10070

PlayStation®Home

PlayStation Home will require these additional ports and IPs opened.

TCP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3480, 8080IP addresses:

199.108.4.0/24
199.108.5.0/24

210.175.169.130/32
198.107.128.0/22

PlayStation®3 Remote Play
PlayStation®3 Remote Play (via the Internet) requires:
If the router in use supports UPnP, enable the router’s UPnP function. If the router does not support UPnP, you must set the router’s port forwarding to allow communications to the PlayStation 3 from the Internet.
The port number that is used by remote play is TCP Port: 9293

USB or Bluetooth Headsets

TCP Port: 80UDP Ports: 6000 - 7000, 50000, 10070

Note: headsets must be compatible

Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain

TCP Port: 3658

PlayOnline and Final Fantasy XI

TCP Ports: 25, 80, 110, 443, and 50000 - 65535UDP Ports: 50000 - 65535

Other Games
If you need port numbers for games published by third-party companies, contact the publisher of the software title directly. See Game Support Contacts for contact information.

I've always noticed that the PSN Store application itself is much faster than using NXE, but the download speed of files are terrible. The Battlefield 3 patch last night took forever. I wonder if things download faster for plus users?

Sorry for the bump, but has anyone with my PSN issues ever resolved their speed problems?
I once had issues in an apartment I lived in (just like those posting here). Moving to a different apartment with the same provider using the same network hardware was enough to completely solve the issue. I now live in another state in a house with a different provider and performance is still fast.

I never figured out why there were issues with mine to begin with but it was tied to my location.

It is rather annoying and the worst is when someone says your connection sucks, yet my 360 downloads stuff very quickly.

Also, does the PS3 support wireless N? I've had my trusty Linksys Wireless G WRT54G for almost 5 years now and while it is still going strong, I'm thinking of upgrading.

took me 7 fricking hours to download harry potter movie, it was 8 gigs. on xblx, maximum of 2-3

No matter what you do, don't call either your provider or Sony.

With Comcast, they made me reset my modem four times, and check my download speeds from my browser to their website, and about 15 other useless things. I kept explaining that everything was fine except downloading from one single source, PSN, but they insisted I do all these absurd gymnastics. Of course, after 45 minutes of this, they told me to contact Sony.

Sony was even worse. Absolutely zero networking knowledge, they insisted I go through this blatantly by-the-book troubleshooting. I kept explaining that I had already tried everything they were telling me, and could I please have my call escalated to a manager or something, and they said that was impossible. After badgering them for help, they finally said they would put in a work ticket for me and get back to me. They called back about two weeks later, and the "manager" was just as clueless, and said it was a problem with Comcast.

I believe the reason that this has never been resolved, and continues to be a problem with so many people, is that they basically insulate themselves entirely through incompetent call-centers where the complaints just die and are never able to go up the chain to someone who could actually fix them.
