Sonic 2019 version, SEGA finally decided to please classic fans.

What about the chili dogs?

Something like this would've made for a better "bad-ass" Knuckles, even though that's not saying much with the current standard being that ugly. Some of the artist's other concepts are nifty too.

Yeah I've always thought that those designs are great. Like someone else said, they wouldn't be very practical for the series, but as a spinoff I think they would be amazing.

Sonic 2019 version, SEGA finally decided to please classic fans.

This is adorable.

I just noticed Amy's arms.

They changed Sonic's arms to blue to match the rest of his body.

Why didn't they also change Amy's arms to pink match the rest of her body?

Huh all this is news to me. Sonic looks fine to me, I actually like the scarf. Tails and Amy I'm indifferent to and Knuckles is lol worthy. Seriously they need to go back to the drawing board with Knuckles.

It's more the lanky limbs, dead-eyed expressions and centremouths in the video game that look really awful to me. In the tv show and press-release stuff the only thing that strikes me as dumb is all the tape (seriously why the fuck is it even on their shoes) and how tall they are now.

I think the new Eggman looks great though. Really neat mixture of his 'classic' and normal design with a bit of the old DIC cartoon stuff.

I still believe, if a character's good, he's good despite trend. Universal appeal and timelessness outlasts dated trends. Sonic, even when he first showed up, looked like some old timey cartoon character. Like someone who could've existed alongside Felix the Cat, the old Disney toons or Fleischer cartoons. But that was the appeal, IMO. No where was it trendy or relevant in the late 80s/early 90s(especially considering that cartoony look was mostly relevant in the 20s and 30s), that's for sure. That didn't matter, though. Sonic was still accepted regardless of that look, by a generation of children who probably never watched or were heavily familiar with those style of cartoons(well, some of us were, since I was a kid and I was a big Popeye fan, was familiar with Felix and such). Though, to say it predates us is an understatement. Those toons originally came out when our GRANDPARENTS were kids, yet despite generations later, we, the youngins, weren't as shallow as people thought we were.
That's not right at all... The early 90s were ALL about classic cartoon characters being cool to kids... This was the time when both classic Disney and Looney Toons saw a huge revival in popularity...TV shows and movies featuring those types of characters were both enormously popular, and one thing I remember was how so many kids wore T-Shirts with cartoon characters on them. Heck even sports teams had a huge influx of cartoony mascots populate their branding during that era.

Sonics popularity those days were a direct outgrowth of this revival in popularity of the cartoony mascot. Nowadays that appeal just isn't there anymore for the current younger generation.

Why all the bandages? Do they all have injuries? Have they just been released from hospital?
That's sports tape, the same stuff that athletes wrap around their wrists, hands, ankles, and shoes. I think they use the tape on their legs to keep their shoes from falling off, & hands to keep their hands from bleeding when they punch something.

Love the new design choices, its been long overdue.

Each character have unique characetristics and the art is alot more modern, sonics design from the dreamcast era had its run.

Not a sonic fan but this new wii u title looks to be shaping up well

The transition was terrible. I'm sure most people would have been okay with him remaining somewhat "cute". Instead the character design shifted into this awkward teenage Sonic with a more exaggerate personality. "THIS Sonic is mature. Look at his girlfriend!" Sure a certain demographic bought into it but was the change worth it? Once you've grown into adulthood the blind interest in the "alpha male" should stop. You don't watch a Bruce Willis film and still think "damn, this guy is cool" anymore do you? SEGA alienates adults and young children alike with such poor presentation.

I dont really know what are you talking about here.
First of all, Amy wasnt his girlfriend, and Sonic from SA was the same as the Sonic from the Genesis era. Its just that those games didnt have any dialogue.
This new Sonic is going further away from the one in the Genesis era, being even taller and lankier. Something more like his 2006 model that everyone hated. And the scarft and bandages are just fanfiction material. Really, I think his Colors/Generations model, aside green eyes, was really good.

Yep, the longer snout makes way more sense considering Knuckles build in Boom.

Classic Sonic misses the point of the character in today's world.

Sonic was intentionally created to be a tryhard poochie forced cool alternative to Mario with 'tude.

Nowadays, Classic Sonic is "cute". It's the antithesis of the character's purpose.

Sonic evolved to remain "cool" in 99 the same as he was "cool" in 91, and in 2014, bandages and Bangarang are apparently cool.

Either Sonic could have stayed the same, and in doing so lose a part of his character, or perhaps dies out like all the other mascots besides Mario, instead of grabbing the attention of a new generation of children who are still fervently attached to the character.

Good post, agree 100%

Despite Classic Sonic "knowitall" ramblings, SEGA knew what they were doing...except when it comes to 2006. Sonic always looked good, no problems there.

Modern Sonic (& all the designs that came with him) from the Dreamcast era won't go anywhere, as these new designs won't replace Modern Sonic & the others.

This is only a Western spin-off in its own canon, similar to the Archie comics.

One could also compare it to Riders....

Character design, yes.

Gameplay, nope. It looks like spectacle over meaty gameplay. Which has been Sonic's schtick since the 16-bit era.
If you're referring to the GIF, that's from a note-for-note recreation of a 16-bit level in Sonic Generations.

They keep messing up. Sonic should have stayed short and round. You'll never see Mario and crew drastically changed in the way Sonic has. It's unnecessary.

But Sega obviously has a different idea of what the Sonic universe should be than I do, with their guns, rock music and realistic people and all.

As someone who has hated every sonic game from 1999 onwards - sole exception being the neo geo pocket game, this redesign is welcome.

Sonic adventure and 3d in general was the worst thing to happen to this series, followed by dimps and Bioware

to be fair Sonic didnt had guns since Shadow the Hedgehog, and realistic people since Sonic 2006. From Unleashed onwards, Sonic Team tried to make the series more cartoonish.

Obviously people are going to ignore that and act like Sonic 2006 was the last game in the franchise, ignoring the good that Colors and Generations made to the franchise, both in gameplay and artstyle.

Guns were mainly in Shadow alone (& SA2 to an extent, with the mechs), realistic people were dropped for a more cartoony ones since Unleashed, & the use of rock music has been lessened in recent games (I actually don't mind the rock music, really).

I'm going to assume this new design is ONLY for this western developed game.

Until Sega formally adopts this new design in their internally developed games, I think the shitty Western designs will stick in the shitty Western developed game.

Too bad that with the return of exploration and multiple characters with distinct abilities, Boom is the most promising looking Sonic game in a long while from what we've seen/heard.

It's for Wii-U, right?

So nobody will even see the new designs anyway.

You know if you wanted to make a 'Wii-U is doomed' drive-by comment at least research the fact that this was going to be a cartoon (which was announced a year ago) and have a 3DS version and a lot of toys that share the same design.

I don't know, that would make you look less uninformed?

I actually really like the Sonic Adventure designs, but these new ones are awful. Who the hell let Knuckles miss his leg days?!

Mario = Coca Cola
Sonic = Pepsi

Man, people are really upset over this… The only things I don't like are how big Amy's head looks, her twig like arms, and Knuckles kinda looking like he got a head transplant.

Both Sonic and Tails look better than they've looked in ages. Maybe they could tone down the sports tape a bit.

You complain about anthropomorphia and lankiness, but the new Sonic is even lankier, and even more anthropomorphic, at least with that awfully fashionable scarf.
Sonic definitely reminds me of a hipster.

Knuckles is just too much for me. I don't understand why they didn't emphasize the knuckles.

I don't believe the new knuckles sets a very good example for the kids. Might as well have given amy some giant fake boobs too.

This is true and I can't argue. I guess with me, it's like someone who does you wrong in some way. You can forgive but you can never forget, constantly waiting for the day that they relapse. For the most part, Mario has been the trustworthy loyal friend while Sonic has been the thieving crackhead who you still love to death but hopes can stay sober and trustworthy.

And well actually, look at the direction they have taken him now, with kick boxer wraps and Knuckles as the brute bear of the group. My old friend is slipping back into his old ways again.

The new design for Sonic and Tails is way better than the one from before Sonic Boom.
Knuckles and Amy are ok, no improvement but also not worse than before.

Tails, in my opinion, has a superior design than before. Sonic & Amy are passable, & Knuckles took me a bit to get used to his new design.

The bandages thing actually has precedent in real life. In my opinion, that puts it a million steps ahead of Final Fantasy's belt fetish.

Swole Knucks is a bit of a shock, but it looks a lot better in the screenshots.

I think people will warm up to these designs over time once they're no longer new or shocking. Especially if the game actually ends up good.
I didn't know about bandages in shoes, what is its porpuse in in real life sports?, serious question.
