Why the hate for Bioshock Infinite?

Soynalists kept praising it as the second coming before release, even though it looked kinda goofy and mediocre. They kept forcing it as a "piece of art", a storytelling philosophical masterpiece that would elevate videogames as a medium. But it turned out to be a primitive linear shooter with nonsensical story and dialogue.

It was completely forgotten months after release when Last of Us came out.

I like the story and characters. The gameplay was my issue, to be honest, the thing I remember most about the game was how many trash cans I looked in. Those roller coaster sections all sucked. I loved the setting and feel of the city. The big bird was cool for the story, but I hated interacting with it.

Long story short: Ken Levine created a masterful labyrinth of a story that spans across two games and the final game's DLC. It is arguably the most ambitious videogame storytelling ever produced and that will inevitably lead to a few minor flaws in execution since videogames are inherently difficult to tell a story with, let alone a story with same weight and ambition as BioShock.

Well, I'll always admire a positive opinion. Maybe I'll go back as I do own the DLC but never got round to it (or maybe just Burial at Sea).

I'd highly recommend you play the first bioshock and infinite and THEN the Burial at Sea DLC.

Thank me later ;)

Or watch a recap of the stories and then delve into the DLC.

Loved this game until the last few sections when there was just way too much shooting. Also, the Lady Comcost bossfight was bullshit..

Loved all 3 games and the Burial at Sea Episode 1 DLC gave me what many were requesting at the time and that was Rapture in its prime. It looked amazing.

Planning to play it soon, especially the DLC ;)

You should give the base game a chance. While many people dont like it, i liked it as much as Bioshock 1. The highs are not as good as in part 1, but neither are the lows as bad Part 1 lost a lot of steam after Ryan.

Infinity did have some shortcomings, but it is still an excellent game + the dlcs are must play for anyone who liked Rapture.

I definitely will and I tend to have a soft spot for spin-offs in general, so I can't wait to see a different take on the world of Rapture!

Because Bioshock Infinite deep down was a very basic/ generic shooter in a fancy world. Thats how I feel no matter how many times I play it.

Didnt get this feel with the previous Bioshocks. They were superior in every way especially the first. God knows how a series can regress.

In the end it was all about Rapture for me. I did not care for anything else and i even liked the approach of part 2. It has that great music and the atmosphere surrounding Rapture. What more can you ask for? I reckon you'll have a good time.

Same here. Rapture has been arguably my favourite world in any videogame to date!

Can't wait :)

This was a great moment if not spoiled

I didn't like Infinite, incredibly boring gameplay. But it's the only Bioshock I've played, should I play the others?

Honestly I think it's because of all the previews and demos that came before it. Some showed scenes and content that never made it in. I believe quite a bit of footage we prerendered too, but I could be wrong, it's been awhile. So a lot of people weren't fans of that.

I'm a big Bioshock fan and I still really enjoyed it for what it was, albeit it's my least favorite of the three.

In the end, I think the footage that was available before release painted a much larger picture than what went gold. What we got was more "watered down" according to a lot of folks.
Yeah in the trailers they were showing gameplay way too over ambitious.

that game was fine, boring, but i got thru it. i didn't have that sadness you get when a great game comes to an end, when you wish you could forget and experience it again as if it was the first time.

Because trash is trash

Real answer? For me it lacked the compelling story telling the first had we all know the second one is the red headed step child because Levine and company didn't make it but I actually preferred 2 over infinite in almost every single way.

i kinda love that game but people is still mad at how different it was compared to the far more ambitious reveal.

Some games do not need sequels and can actually be lessened by them.

Bioshock was one such game.

I liked it more than 2, but not as much as 1. It did seem a bit too linear for it's own good which detracted from it I feel but not to the point where it ruined the overall experience.

Is the Remastered Collection atill kinda meh? I never got it because of the weird texture changes they made to Bioshock 1

I played this game years after it came out and honestly thought I was very overrated.

Repetitive mini bosses

Graphics are way too bloomy

Checkpoints are all over the place. I remember checkpoints putting you right in front of a boss while he's firing at you.

Frankly obnoxious game from what I played. Hope you like scratchy 40s gramafone music.

I don't remember having a good time and you are correct there is a lot of hate for this game. It kept getting game of the year nominations and usually that opens itself up to criticism. I wasn't playing games at the time and took a break for years and that was the first game I came back to.

I was not impressed. The first 2 games were way better.

What it ended up being was a sub standard first person shooter with an interesting hook gliding mechanic.

I thought it was pretty good, it just fizzled out and got boring halfway in. A bit too repetitive.

My entire time with Infinite was great and it has a lot of moments (Elizabeth, Comstock etc.) I think it's 2K's best game EVER.

I liked Infinite hugely, I thought it was a great experience and I played it partially with my girl by my side in one of a few efforts I've made over the years to convince her that gaming is worthwhile.

Look, I'm not trying to flame this stuff, I'm not trying to take on the video by the third poster on this thread (i can't, i didn't watch his whole 38 minute video), but from my perspective doing things like saying the opening moment where you have to choose to throw a ball at a couple of the organizer is flaccid, or criticizing the game for not using 'nigger' so much, it's a bit like criticizing a snickers bar because it contains nuts, caramel and chocolate (and nougat) but no strawberries. You're taking something that's entirely worthy, if limited, as it stands and asking why it couldn't be more/more complex.

I concede that, sure, if this game had been the more cutting and demonstrative title the guy in that video hints at, it could have been an important moment in gaming history... But do we really have to get on it for not having achieved that?

I thought the game was cinematic, good looking, dramatic, and polished. I didn't pick it apart as I was playing it.

I enjoyed Bioshock Infinite for what it was, but it wasn't the revolution that was promised. The previews before hand painted a more immersive sim, or RPG-ish game. They even went out of their way to talk about how you were going to be able to zip around the open world on those sky rails.

If someone were to play the game as presented, without the hype, I think they would enjoy it.

My own expectations ruined it for me.

Had I went in without them I would have been fine. I ended up replaying it and liked it.

Had no idea people hated it....granted it was a time in my life before I participated in gaming forums. Its got good reviews, and I actually enjoyed playing it. It was different than the first 2 BIoshock games, but it was quirky enough to be a Bioshock game, I guess? The ending blew me away.

I liked it, not quite as good as Bioshock 1 but still a really good game. 8/10. I think Infinite got a lot of flack for being a more stripped down version of what the previews showed.
Great trilogy and I loved playing all 3 back to back with the collection

Bioshock 9/10
Bioshock 2 8.5/10
Bioshock Infinite 8/10

I love Infinite now

I recently bought THE BIOSHOCK COLLECTION for my PS4 solely for nostalgia sake (BioShock 1 was my favorite back in 2007)...
...but when I replayed them all, I can't believe I'm saying this, but, I like Infinite better now.
The reason? You may not have noticed but Infinite has this cool "The Shining-esq" type score and sounds throughout. It's awesome!

I know the graphics on the original are 12 years old and don't hold up too well today. It's not like we got a remastered version where everything looks updated. That said, the story of the original is still very cool. But I prefer Infinite more today

Hate is strongly exagerated it was still a great game with a beautiful atmosphere.

It only felt less like a BioShock game compared to it predeccesors. Escpecially in terms of combat. In 1 and 2 (escpecially) you could strategically plan your combat with traps, environmental hazards etc.ik infinite it was kind of the same where you were stormed with enemies and it felt like a shooter.
The story however was definitely the best one of the series!

I played it recently when it was on PS Plus, it was awful. The youtube video in the third post sums it up better than I can - watch it, it's absolutely savage. it was the first and last Bioshock game for me, I Didn't bother with the DLC or the other two, I doubt the creators of Infinite know anything about making a good game.

Greatly prefer the darker aesthetic of number uno. I do remember liking Infinite at least somewhat. Need to replay it at some point to see how I feel about in 2020.

Weird ending aside, it IS my favorite Bioshock game. No other game in the series has touched it for me. The 1st one had those stupid puzzle gimmicks that were just annoying to me. Also, the narrative in Infinite was friggin' amazing (at least until the end anyway).
