why the hell are so many people bothered with console noise?

Early Dreamcast models (not sure about the later ones...or did it not last long enough for revisions? lolz) were even worse than the 360. It was so bad during loading that I was genuinely worried if the laser would pack it in.

I actually have my consoles hooked up at my desk. So the machines are very close to me when playing, as close or closer than speakers.

Thus the quieter the machines are, the better. I spent a small fortune making my PC quiet.

This. Not only the drive gets annoying loaud but also the fans. I could be playing a demo with no disc inside and the fans are just as loud. I put my 360 behind my HDTV to muffle the sound it makes but that does not work.
Whoa, really? I almost can't hear mine when the disc is not spinning. But since they use different types of fans for their consoles it doesn't really surprise me...

Noise is not that bad on my 360, but if I stick Fable 2 in, am sure my Xbox 360 is about to take off.

most games are too consistently loud for console noise to be much of an issue, but it's highly irritating when you're trying to watch a movie or something

The drive slows right down for DVDs. Or at least mine does.

I think if we stare at the official thread for long enough, we should be figure out some sort of correlation between people not getting the draw of Dead Space and playing it on an Xbox 360.

[Rant]

Noise from electronic components is my pet hate, it's the only reason I own a PS3 over a 360, I don't even care how unreliable the 360's are tbh, they are so cheap now I'd have a backup anyway for when one went wrong but they are nosiest things I've ever owned, everything about them is noisy, the PSU whines, the rear fans, not only are they loud but they changes in pitch all the fucking time, up and down up and down, it drive you mad, and then you have the optical drive, it's like an Apache aircraft taking off in your room, I'm sorry but it's just not on, sound for many people is an issue, you take PC users for example, how much money do you think PC enthusiasts spend on trying to make their PC's run quieter every year, millions ?, I know over the last decade I must of spent at least $2000 on fans/coolers/cases etc trying to quieten down my PC's.

[/Rant]

Because not every game I own pumps music at you all the time and it's a constant reminder that you're in your room playing a game, basically cutting any escapism out at the ankles.

I bought large can headphones and never looked back.

it's not only the 360, xbox 1 was the same. everytime u try to play a game on a microsoft console, it feels like you're right next to an airplane getting ready to take off.

I think we should go back to casette tapes. The background noise is easily drowned out if you turn the volume up.

holy shit if the staticy sound of the 360's drive keeps you up you must not be able to sleep at all, seriously, I highly doubt the whirring of the damn drive could keep someone up

You're kind of angsty.

He's talking about the volume of the actual media... it has to be louder to drown out the sound of the drive.

Oh no they weren't. My (german) launch Dreamcast is not in anyway as friggin' loud as my august 07 xbox 360. That thing sounds like a goddamn jet engine, drive working or not.

I think I'll just record the noise that thing makes tomorrow and post it here. Maybe newer Xboxes with falcon or jasper boards are not as noisy anymore, be glad if you have one of them. My unit makes me feel as if I'm living next to an airport.

I think the real question is why wouldn't they be?

For all the technological advancements of the past decade or two consoles are pretty fucking loud these days. You shouldn't have to sport a pimped out sound system or crank the volume to drown out the noise of an electronic device carrying out the function it's designed for. Besides, some people have shared living arrangements where they can't just blast their televisions at all hours of the day.

people keep bitching about how loud the 360 is, but WTF do you play games without any sound or something? your in game music and sound should EASILY drown out any sounds

people complain about how loud it is like its making them deaf...

Because it is, in fact, rediculously loud. I know my 360 is anyway, with the disk drive spinning.

If I want to play a game in the evening, and try not to wake my flatmates, the drive noise sometimes beats the sound, and it's quite annoying.

Blow out of proportions like always, with the TV on mute i can clearly hear my 360 and faintly my PS3,with the TV volume at not even a quart of the volume i just can't,when i turn on my Yamaha receiver even less.:lol

Maybe because, by the love of fucking Jesus, when I buy a massive overpriced piece of technology that's been engineered by a gang of thieving bootlicks, it should not be testable under the second law of fucking thermodynamics?

My GOD.

Imagine asking the same thing about a car's rattle, or a television's smell?

Console gamers have no perspective on this. These companies are refurbishing old ruined consoles and selling them again, as new. If they did this with anything else, lives would be lost.
nailed it.

the noise is the one reason I never turn on my 360. that noise gives me fucking insta-migraine now. terrible

I find the 360 so annoyingly loud that I moved it into a closet. It's ridiculously loud.

This thread is pretty hilarious.

I think you shouldnt get out of your house, the noise outside might kill you.

I'm pretty sure the Triple is the quietest.

The wii can be very quiet, but mine's noise had a weird 'ticking' quality that made it more irksome than the PS3.

I thought my PS3 was silent until I built my new silent PC. Which is so quiet I sometimes mistake it for being off.

This thread's title stinks. Replace console with Xbox 360 and you have yourself a more accurate title.

The 360 is the LOUDEST console ever released.

Some of us are married with children also, so we have to watch the volume. Not something someone who is single or a kid would understand I guess.

Probably mentioned by someone else already, but I live in a condo... I can't be cranking the volume up even if I want to. Anything that can help allow me to hear with the volume lower is a huge plus.

Additionally, I usually play when my gf has gone to bed. The TV is by the wall adjacent to our bedroom, so again, the lower the volume of everything, the better.

Because quiet (and small) electronics is clearly more attractive than the loud and big.

PS3 and 360 can possibly be excused, being cutting edge tech that generates a lot of heat, but I don't really understand why the Wii isn't dead quiet. PS1/Saturn quiet that is. And I'm eagerly awaiting the PSThree.

Well, my launch 360 is extremely noisy and it is very distracting. I have my sound up pretty high but it's still clearly there. It's way louder than any PC I had up until that point. It's een like that since day one and it works absolutely perfectly, never had a problem with it, except for the damn noise.

I hated the sound of my sold 360... man when you played for hours, you were so tahnkful when this piece of fan shut of

With the 360 on the HD projector the machine is directly behind my head and subtitles are a must :lol

I get a 2.5m screen size but don't get to hear much if it decides to go into overdrive.

Fan noise on my 60GB is much less than drive though so hopefully NXE will make it quiet.

Hate playing games on my 360 at low volume. The console is just too loud.

My nice quiet PS3 has gone in for repair, and so im borrowing my dads until its back (cant miss out on MS2 and LBP)
After about 20 mins the fan noise is ridiculous. I was watching a movie last night (volume fairly high) and i could still hear the fans over the top of it.

without a disc in the drive the 360 is louder than my pc. when a disc is in the drive its retarded loud. games that rely on subtle atmospheric music/sound are more or less ruined by the noise the system makes. playing at night when you cant crank your speakers to drown out the pos hardware is also a huge minus.

im so happy about the nxe update since it will make the system bearable. still could be quieter if microsoft didnt cheap out on parts but it'll do. the sad thing is the noise problem could have been solved a long time ago. before the last dashboard update was released it was possible to run the dvd drive at a slower speed via a simple trick and despite the lower speed all games ran without any negative effect. why microsoft has the drive moving at full speed all the time is beyond me...

It is so loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am 100% deaf, have an F-16 Jet constantly on right next to my 360, with a marching band standing in front of it playing, and a jackhammer drilling near it, and I STILL hear the 360 over everything else.*

*None of this is actually true. The real answer is because it's cool to hate on it.

The PS2(or at least when it was first released) was about 2 times as loud.

Not a chance in hell, tell me when you make it out of the Labyrinth.

Oh and tell David Bowie I said hi.

What about silent sections in games? The noise from my 360 nearly destroyed some of the suspenseful moments in Dead Space. I'm not usually a noise snob, but jeez, the 360 sounds like a god damn hair dryer. It drives me insane.

That sucks. I just finished dead space on PS3, so I can imagine a lot of parts being ruined by a loud console. Not just horror games, a lot of games have quiet moments so it doesn't matter how loud your sound is, it can still be a problem.

is the wii more silent the ps3?
or does the triple take the crown?

the Wii's drive is noisy for most games i played on it. sounds like it's scratching the disc sometimes whenever it's loading a game. so no, it's not quieter than the PS3.

i played Dead Space on the 360 and hardly noticed the fan noise. there's hardly any quiet moments cuz the ambient noise in the game is stellar. but hey, i play 5 feet away from my 360 so maybe that's why i didn't notice it. ;)

OP, some guys here play on their PC monitors or smaller HDTVs on a desk so they hear the 360 since it's right next to them. if all the guys who bitched about the 360 fan noise posted pics of their setup, i bet they all play with the 360 right next to them. the easiest solution is to get 5.1 headphones or something.

My previous 360 produced sound levels higher than my TV's speakers are able to produce :P
And even my current 360 is noisy as hell, I have to turn my sound way up to hear voices properly. It's worse than the console RRODing if you ask me.

Because my effin pc doesn't make as much noise when it's using the disc drive. :| The wii and 360 both produce noise that scare the shit out of me, in terms of thinking about their future and longevity. :(

Mine is in front of my TV and i sit a few feet back when playing. It is just a loud bastard.
