Why upgrade when the older consoles have more (and better) features?

Absolutely right OP for all of the "durr gamez" there are guys like me (potentially family guys) who have to have a box that is more than just game machine. And imo the games on the new generation are not enough to make me jump in. Yet.

This is some really basic stuff... And it's pretty cut-and-dry.. No talking points, only questions.

Ok...

Why are both ps4 and xb1 offering less features than their ancestors? I'm sure there are many examples, but just for clarity:
- games take forever to install on xb1, while on the 360 they were always speedy.

Games on x360 were on DVD. Blu-Ray is up to 6 times more data, and hard drive speeds haven't changed all that much.

- on ps3 online multiplayer was free, but with ps4 you need to subscribe to a service.

Blame this one on microsoft. The revenue is simply too great for Sony to just ignore here. That being said, PS+ throws a lot of content at you for that $50 ($40 if you bargain hunt), and discounts most of the games every other month or so. If you play more than 1 or 2 games a year, that subscription pays for itself more often than not.

- xbox360 games with gold lets you keep your games even if your script runs out, xb1 requires an active subscription.

games with gold is laughably terrible next to PS+. sure, you can keep those ancient games, but who wants to play them? the XB1 version is closer to the PS+ model, so you'll be getting a lot more games per month, and they're going to be more recent. Take a cruise through the threads sometime. Almost nobody thought games with gold was the better deal there.

- ps4 controller can't hold a charge past a few hours while ps3 had good battery life.

it has a gigantic LED on the front that eats battery. other than that the PS4 has better sticks, a touchpad, digital face buttons instead of analog, and triggers that are actually useful. The dualshock 3 is worse in nearly every way. If battery is really an issue, plug the controller into a laptop, netbook, or tablet to keep it charged next to you while you play. infinite battery life.

I could go on, but really... Why not at least try to duplicate the features we love while giving us more and newer options? Why remove features?

Do you remember the kind of shape the PS3 was in at launch? the thing was bare bones and horrible. it took sony half a decade to add the services people were asking for, and to make PSN usable. The PS4 won't be any different. services will be added as time permits and the firmware will evolve.

sometime in life you just need new stuff man!

- new pc
- new smarthphones
- new car
- new clothes
- new consoles

why? becouse we humans love new shit :D

You're right, it doesn't make sense to upgrade. That's why I kept my old consoles and bought the new ones, too. It's not an either/or choice.

I do find it pretty silly that these new consoles are lacking such no-brainer features, though. You would think the default feature set would be "everything the prior machine does".

For example, you know the PS4 aint gonna drop in price anytime soon, maybe in a nother year.

So why not buy it now for the same price?

I don't understand why, aside from finances, you'd not want to upgrade. The only missing feature on either box is 3D bluray playback. Ok there's MP3 too but the market is clearly moving to sub services and they are just trying to encourage you to sub to theirs. Not ideal.

But seriously, even if the only games coming were also coming to last gen, I'd still want the newer console with the better gfx, higher fps, and higher rez. Seriously, game X on PS3 is almost always far inferior to the PS4 version.

But there are worthy exclusives.

I bought the PS3 in November 2007, and have played pretty much everything I wanted on it. So, there's no reason to linger in the past, when the PS4 already has a plenty of games to play (finished 8 so far, half of them retail titles), and much more coming.

The only features I miss are USB media playback, YouTube app, and being able to organize content, but they'll be there eventually. In the meanwhile, the PS3 stays as my media box, and the PS4 is where I play most of my games on, excluding those rare older games on PS+ I still might want to play.

I have all past gen and current gen consoles, and I tend to agree. The graphical upgrade hasn't yet been that significant. Also, PS3 supports 3D blu-ray movies, while PS4 doesn't yet.

I haven't upgraded. Few years down the line, when all these bells and whistles are padded onto the consoles, and they have some price-drops, it'll be win, win, win all around.

I use both my PS4 and PS3 regularly. The battery life of the controller, paying for online (and lots of games), and lack of mp3 support do not make me regret picking up a PS4 right away. In fact I never boot up the PS3 and think, "Holy shit this is so much better because my battery lasts longer!"

Youtube TV works just fine using the PS4 web browser.

Because the most important feature a console can have is "new games to play". Should be obvious, I'd think.

i feel like this is not as valid an arguement it might have been in previous generations.. Unless you are unemployed or getting a govt check, then how would you possibly have time to play everything? My list of stuff to play on ps3 and 360 is still a beast of a list.

I got bored with the old toys, sold them and bought new ones.

missing another tower of games in the shot.

Why do you have 3 of everything, send me one.

I don't really care about the social features, but being able to quickly jump out of a game and access the whole system OS, then jump back in, is a great feature. The 360 and PS3 feel sluggish in comparison. So...yeah...

New games that are superior in scope, scale, and depth than previous gen games isn't an important feature of next gen consoles? You heard it here first folks. Why do we have to have played everything? I played what I was interested in and I have since moved on to greener pastures.

What features specifically are missing for you?

Because games and... Next Generation. You're missing the core of consoles. It was and will always be about the games. Looks to me like you're looking for reasons not to upgrade.

The question should and I mean SHOULD always be:
Why NOT?

There will always be things to complain about and I agree with most of your points.

Why get a double bacon cheeseburgers when you can get a regular cheeseburger? It's all pretty cut and dry.

- double bacon cheeseburgers take forever to eat, while a regular cheeseburger can be eaten much faster.
- double bacon cheeseburger is 3 or 4 dollars, but the regular cheeseburger is only a dollar
- regular cheeseburgers can be reheated and taste mostly the same, but bacon reheated in a microwave tastes awful
- think of all the space you'll save in your car when you order a cheeseburger instead of a double bacon cheeseburger

Everything you listed is why I use my PC. I bought the new consoles for exclusives (and only then, off-line exclusives, since I won't pay for multiplayer).

Just went back to try Boderlands 2 on my 360. That was an awful experience. I was actually getting sick.

After playing on current gen and PC these past few months going back is impossible.

You just made my day, sir. Hats off. But don't forget to mention how much space a sarcastic sign takes.

You can thank all the schmucks who paid for Xbox-Live for that shit, buddy.

MS has been making practically free money off of these chump-ass gamers for years. Sony finally said "Well, fuck it then" and decided they wanted their finger in that free money pie too. It fucking sucks, but it is what it is.

At the end of the day WE did this to our selves.

There is a lot of truth in that, Microsoft did it last gen and lots of people were defending that to the hilt. I don't think Sony as a business would have got away with not charging this gen after Microsoft's success with it.

Even then it's pretty much been implemented as a bullet point in plus. I was already a subscriber and pretty much a single player one at that, so can't say it's had much of an impact. The only game I've played online so far doesn't require plus anyway.

As for the points in the OP, I know it mentions install times for the XBox One, but for the PS4 it's a massive difference, with the installs often being quicker than even relatively small installations on the PS3. I didn't care too much about it then, but it really makes a difference, if anything it's made me more aware of some painfully long load times on PC games I've got (*cough* Civ5 *cough*)..

I've been able to move my media streaming stuff wholesale to the PS4, all the apps I used on the PS3 are there. The only thing I use my PS3 for now is playing older games, never did use it for playing music as I couldn't get the LPs to fit.

Have always bought multiple machines and always get rid of everything near end of generation. Got a younger brother so 2 out of 3 machines are always in use one spare for when the boys drop by.

what's split screen and sharing?! :D

I was faced with this dilemma this year: either buy a PS4 now or wait for a pricecut (probably next year?) and work through my PS3 backlog. Honestly, there just isn't enough on my PS3 backlog to make it worthwhile to hold out. I don't play a ton of games, only games that look rock solid from the genres I like, with a couple of wildcards. Witcher 3 and Bloodborne alone are worth more to me than every PS3 game I haven't yet played combined.

I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel so hard that I bought Black Flag to tide me over this summer until my PS4 arrives.

this type of behaviour fascinates me, to be totally honest. not in a bad way, either. Why do you do that out of curiosity, just to save money on the system/games?

This is pretty much what I've done for the last two console generations--mainly because by the end of the console's lifespan, several things are true:

- The system is more affordable
- The system has a good selection of high-quality games
- Many of those games can be gotten for dirt cheap pre-owned, especially if they were popular.

Being someone who doesn't play competitive multiplayer games/modes, the size of the online community isn't a factor for me. By the time I've played through all of the last-gen games... current-gen is typically around the place the previous-gen systems were when I bought it.

I jumped into last gen with the PS3 slim and I don't regret it. But I think this gen favors getting in early moreso than last gen did: console prices are lower and there are a lot more quality games coming out in generation year three (2015) than there were in 2007-2008. Or that's what it seems like to me.

At the current time, my choices from most wanted to least wanted are thus:

3DS & Wii U
Gaming PC
Android TV
PlayStation TV
PlayStation 4

Now this is not to say that PlayStation 4 is a bad buy since I still plan to get it, just that PlayStation 4 doesn't have enough reasons for me to buy it at the moment. I want more options and games before I buy in to the PS4. I want to be able to play MP3s and buy digital PS1 games on my PS4 to keep and not to stream. Hell, if it did the later, the PlayStation TV would be removed from my list. However, given that the games which most interest me are either Indie Games, PC Games, Japanese Games, or Nintendo Games, it seems like Nintendo Systems and a Gaming PC would be my best choices. At least, Android TV and PlayStation TV have the advantage of likely being less than $200.

What exactly does Android TV offer you? I ask this out of ignorance: I'm totally devoted to Android as a phone OS but I've heard basically nothing about Android TV.

For me, the upgrade in UI is enough. The PS4s UI is so much snappier and quicker than the XMB it's not even funny.

DS4 is also worlds better than DS3.

And then there's the game.

DS4 is also worlds better than DS3.

Not worlds. Just more ergonomic. DS4 suffers from ridiculously short battery life and very poor rubber (at least the first models). I still need to send mine in, before the 1 year warranty expires. This whole process is going to take about 3-4 weeks here in germany, which is why I'll wait for my arcade stick to arrive.

I still wonder why (for PS4):

  • I can't pause downloads (incl. individually).
  • MP3 playback is still missing
  • Why turning off the controller is now a two step process

PS: I only turned on my PS4 less than a handful of times and it makes me wonder what else I will find missing on it that I got used on PS3. Presumably, PS3 media server won't work.

Install times are pretty quick on PS4 and you can usually start playing while it's installing, so that doesn't bother me. Already had PS+ so the online requirement doesn't bother me either. And I don't mind plugging in the controller when I'm done using it, so it usually always has a charge when I need it.

Plus, games.

This^, also lets remember that the PS3 didn't have half the features it does now when it launched, they were added in through firmware updates overtime (Dlna , 3d bluray playback etc...). It will be the same for the PS4 and Xbox one, also the O.P. dismisses the features current gen has that the previous didn't.

Anyone who's not making the switch to a next gen console is not a real gamer

I disagree with OP, but this sentiment is also garbage.

Whether or not to get next-gen consoles is highly dependent on your budget, which games you're interested in, whether or not the other changes matter to you, and a host of other things.
