Wii Budget Gaming Thread

SEGA's House of the Dead 2 + 3 Return has started to shamble to your friendly local gameshop, so be sure to be on the lookout if you want some more budget lightgun action for your Wii to complement Ghost Squad. The reviews are generally positive, mentioning good controls but somewhat dated gameplay and graphics - but that shouldn't stop anybody after some zombie action if they enjoyed the original arcade versions.

In other news, I added Bomberman Land Wii to the OP, but that game recieved very mixed ratings, basically due to its minigame-heavy main mode and no online multiplayer. Fans of Bomberman on the lookout for a console version should probably stick with Bomberman '93 on the VC for up to five players, or wait until Bomberman Wii comes out to Wiiware with promised online multiplayer - and a lower price tag.

amazon is selling soul calibur legends for 25.99 with free shipping and they have emergency mayhem for 39.99 if you preorder and it to has free shipping

Thanks for the tip! I added Soulcalibur to the OP as a deal - however this is another game where people should know what they are getting into before getting, since it did recieve rather mediocre reviews on metacritic - but I am sure that some people enjoyed it a lot.

Is the bomberman game any good? I didn't even realize they released one but after it looking like the old bombermans I've been really tempted to buy it.

Toys R Us is having a buy 1 Wii game, get $20 off another Wii game. (must be at least 19.99)

I'm getting Zack & Wiki and HotD2+3 for about 40ish plus tax.

With the Bomberman Wii Ware coming eventually and Bomberman '93 already on the Virtual Console, there's really no reason to get it unless you *want* the wiimote minigames.

Thanks for the pointer - I would have totally missed it, and I think I will be using this opportunity to get a second wiimote (WiiPlay) and Zack & Wiki - or maybe even Dewy for "free".

Better make it quick...although not moving as fast as those Buy 2 get 1 free deals last year, my store in particular is pretty cleaned out of most of the decent $29.99 games and some of the hotter full priced games are dwindling down as well. I plan on getting Endless Ocean and House of the Dead once they get House of the Dead in. ^_^

I can't wait for the first series of ULTIMATE HITS or w/e where they repackage games with a horrible branding at the top but then sell them for 10 bucks. If that ever happens, I might pick up Dewey and Mercury Meltdown.

Anyway, awesome thread! One of the major things that is overlooked about the Wii's many last-gen ports is that they actually are last-gen prices. This thread will help highlight the games that many of us were afraid to pay full-price for.

I added Blastworks to the $30 category based on what was reported on the IGN Wii podcast (Nintendo Voice Chat #2). This is a game which is worth looking forward to - it may have originally been based on a freeware PC game, but the current incarnation is a full-fledged shmup with an extremely advanced editor software (for an action console game) which allows people to create their own enemies and levels - and share them with others. And yes, the original game is included, as well.

Octomania by Atlus Games is one of this week's releases, and another entry into the $20 category. If you love creatures of a tentacled variety as well as puzzle games, this could be something for you. Octomania is of particular interest as it supports the WiFi Connection for online play.

One of the better boxarts for the Wii yet. Cool stuff. I wonder if the game is better than horrible?

The outstanding Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection is $30 at Amazon, but only $20 if you can find it in stores (it's been spotted at Target, FYE, and Fred Meyer).

There's also a Wii remake of the old Commodore 64 game, Impossible Mission, for $20. It's not as good as the DS version, but still worth mentioning for the history involved.

I added both of these games to the OP, thanks. :)

Add SEGA Superstar Tennis on the list as Aussie only.

$64AUS everywhere but EB.

This is currently a US-centric thread, and multiple currencies would just mix things up. On the other hand, thanks to the Freeloader, people in countries with stronger currencies (ie everywhere outside the dollar-zone) will profit tremendously from the low prices of these games - especially compared to their home zone game prices. I know what is like - I have lived in Europe most of my life.

And a general question - does anybody have any comments on the formatting of the OP, or ideas on how to make it better? I would appreciate any suggestions or criticisms to make this thread more useful.

The formatting of the OP is fine, but the titles should be links to the official pages. My $0.02...

isn't that redundant?
Considering a lot of the best Wii titles are still $50, regardless of how old they are, not really. I think $30 is a fair limit for what's considered a "budget" game.

I remember when 20$ was an standard for cheap games :(

Both Nitro Bike and Thrillville have recieved price cuts to $30 at Target, which makes them eligible for this list. While neither game rated particularly high at reviews, Nitro Bike does have a nice amount of fans and an online mode for those who are interesting in racing games.

NiGHTS is 30 dollars at Gamestop.

And has been mentioned elsewhere in the forums, for $30 from Amazon as well, so I have added it to the list. Slowly but surely it is filling out - did I miss any other games which have price-dropped recently?

HOTD 2+3 is $19.99 at Gamecrazy. Which is like paying $10 for each game. Which is like, pretty damn cheap and awesome.

Zack and Wiki is now available new for $20 at Gamestop - fans of traditional Sierra/Lucasarts/Coktel Vision point-and-click adventure games with instadeath and other fun joys should go and grab it, if they haven't already.

Gamestop is also offering Harvey Birdman for $20 - if you are either a fan of the series or of the Phoenix Wright games, this might be of interest - the game is not supposed to be extremely long, but for half its original price, it is probably a good deal.

Scanning over the gamestop.com website, I saw that Metal Slug Anthology has been pricedropped down to $20, making this an extremely good deal, too, except that the game is no longer for sale on the website - so go out and check to see if your local Gamestop is offering it at that price, if you like run-and-gun type games.

SSX Blur was 15.99 at my local Costco. THey had around 10 so I think this might be chain-wide.

..and I don't really like it, the controls are pretty cool, but the game just seems, unfinished..

Zach & Wiki is a fantastic game. And at $20 is one of the best deals on any platform.

The Red Star ships this week for $30. It was a blast on the PS2. Really interested if they make any changes to the game for controls. I'll prolly pick it up anyways.

WTF!?! I don't think this game was ever announced before. $30 seems high, as it's a $20 PS2 game from 12 months ago. And didn't Gamestop sell it for $15?

This release really doesn't make any sense to me. How many buttons did it use? Did it use analog or d-pad control originally?

Also, it comes out on July 31st, not this week.

First the small update: My Word Coach is 20$ on buy.com.

And now the big one:

If you sign up for Google Checkout during checkout, you can get 10$ off of any game on buy.com - which makes games such as Zack and Wiki, Elebits, or Mercury Meltdown Revolution ultra-budget games under 10$ each. Add free shipping, and you got a wonderful deal. Of course, you can use this to get Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition for $18.99, instead.

Some people have mentioned that you can use the option more than once by signing up with alternate e-mail accounts, but take that with a grain of salt.

At this point in time, you can buy all of the great third party games together for less than the price of the console. :lol

Any GAFer that doesn't own House of the Dead should hang their head in shame. Two excellent arcade conversions for $30, its probably my favourite Wii title at the moment, Sega realy nailed the IR calibration.

Buy.com's Zack and Wiki supplies instantly disappeared completely - it remains to be seen whether their restock will still be available at that low price. Either way, it should be worth the $20 price tag if you have any interest in Gobliiins-style point and click games.

Heavenly Guardian is coming out at this week at the $20 level, and Majesco's Wild Earth: African Safari should already have been trickling into stores everywhere. The latter game should be of interest of fans of Endless Ocean, since it is basically a "take photos of animals in nature" game which scored quite well as an independent PC game.

yep, something/someone is definitely redundant here.

Twenty dollars!? You young'uns don't know what cheap is! Why, back in the day, you could take that twenty dollars to the bargain case and buy *ten* new Atari games easily! And Bazooka Joe bubblegum for a nickel!

Now that No More Heroes is available for $30 at ebgames.com, the only major games still above the elusive $30 limit are Umbrella Chronicles and Nintendo's own games. Otherwise, as of this point, all of the Wii's good non-Nintendo games are budget-priced.

Myself said:

This is even more true, now.

Oh, Wild Earth: African Safari is now available in stores, and some people are apparently buying, but there aren't any true reviews for the title yet, which is often a bad omen for a game's quality.
