Wii needs more storage!

When will Nintendo expand the wii storage space? They have got to have a Hard Drive add-on in the works, I wanna get more VC games but Im just too afraid to use up all my space and have to resort to file transfers (too much of a hassel!!).

Has there been any word or talks on this happening?? Couldnt they replace the stand with a hard drive shapped stand that connects to the USB?? it be so simple ... in theory.

Lots of things are simple in theory, but Nintendo don't like doing them because they think we're all too stupid to understand even the simplest of things.

Here in the 21st century we've got old ladies hooking up their iPod Nanos to their laptops to copy over the albums they downloaded with Bittorrent... but y'know, plugging a USB drive into a game console is beyond hardcore gamers. So they say.

Yes, it's frustrating.

Study for 20 minutes and taking a 20 minute break
Have no distractions in the room while studying
Do not study in an area where you usually watch tv, eat, sleep, etc.
Be well rested. 6-8 hours every days for around a week before a test or final

Nintendo months back announced a partnership with a Company for an unannounced Wii peripheral . When the company was researched their entire buisness is hard drive production so weve kinda assumed its coming. just a matter of when

I was -just- about to post this exact topic. I'm down to 100 blocks free on my Wii internal memory. How are we going to fit Wii-ware games in only 512mb?

They also really need to make transferring to SD card better. Having to do it one at a time, and it taking 2-5 minutes to transfer the N64 games just sucks. We should at least be able to do batch transfers of more than one channel at a time...

I just wish they'd add SDHC support for my 4GB card.

from what I understand SDHC compatability is a hardware problem, not a software related issue and can't be addressed by firmware upgrades.

I have a 4 gig SDHC card I can't use with my PPC-6700 for exactly this reason.

I thought the only difference between SD and sDHC was the filesystem that was used (Fat16 vs Fat32?)

Yeah, I would like to know why it takes so long. It took me like a minute and a half just to transfer over Kid Icarus

Ask and you probably still won't receive, but it's worth the link.

But whay are you afraid?
Is not like using all your channels is going to stop the Wii from playing games...
You can copy the games (to save space) to a 2GB SD Card..and those retail for like $20 in the meantime.

i smell new sku's on the horizon..... 2 GB or 4 GB version, with DVD playback and HiDef capabilities, available in new colours for $250 and lower the original Wii to $150. Yeah. Oh and make the new sku region-free :D

I definitely agree. Swapping out cards is total bullshit, and the 512mb of space i had is already almost gone.

With WiiWare channel coming, it's a done deal. HDD, Nintendo.

I'm sure they could do a system update that would allow you to run your VC games from USB drives. Who knows why they haven't done it. Maybe they're afraid of people hacking the Wii or something.

I for one don't want to be forced to buy a Nintendo branded HDD. I have a 40GB USB drive which should work just fine.

Nintendo will have to say something soon. Especially if they really want to do the whole downloadable games thing like XBLA.

But you can't play those games from the SD card.

And it is a hassle to copy the games you aren't playing to the SD card, then copying back the ones you want. Certainly more complicated that just changing SD cards or a game disc.

USB memory stick/hard drive support would be awesome.

A branded proprietary hard drive would be okay.

full sd card support is minimal.

Nothing kinda sucks.

Yeah, but as I said .."in the meantime"..is just a temporary solution, they better have a solution to this, if they are going to launch the downloadable games service in a few months.

Correct, you can re-download VC games for free.
Though only if:
-You link your Wii to your My Nintendo account
-Download them from the exact same Wii
-If you're in your 2nd Wii, you transfered the My Nintendo account from the original unit

But even with all that I couldn't get my first 3 VC games..and I already posted the email I received from Nintendo regarding... :(

Here's the email by the way:

Although we would like to assist you, Virtual Console games and applications are not transferable, so just because you have registered a specific system online and you purchased Virtual Console games on one system, doesn't mean that you can have them on any system you own in the future. The only way that the data can be transferred is if the system needed to be repaired, and was sent in to Nintendo for the repair. In that case, Nintendo can make an exception and transfer the data for you.

However, since you sold the system, there is no way for the data to be transferred. Unfortunately, you will need to purchase the games you want again. Sorry.

The easiest fix in my mind, if of course, simply allowing the Wii to run channels off of the SD card slot; completely fixing hte problem, but noooooooooo, this will never happen

I guess that "no transfering your VC games from one Wii to another" will also mean "no transfering VC games from your Wii to Wii 2, please rebuy" when the next gen arrives.

But, if you're running out of space on your single Wii console, you can delete whatever games/channels you're not likely to use in the next month or so, and redownload them later when you do want to use them.

I would take that option in a instant ... they should have a "SD Card Game channel" or something ...

no, SDHC uses a different type of onboard memory controller that standard SD devices aren't equipped to deal with. switching between fat16 and fat32 is easy and I've done it for standard SD cards (I had to reformat my 2 gig before it would work properly) but this doesn't work for SDHC at all. I'll try to find you the link.

I always assumed this sort of reasoning was just an excuse to troll the Wii, but so many people use it... I just don't get it. Just transfer them, (or delete them) it's not so hard. It's certainly less of a hassle than trying to find a cartridge of Paper Mario for under $10. And plenty of the games don't need to be immediately accessible. I downloaded LTTP, played it, beat it, and deleted it. I know I'm not just going to suddenly get a craving to play 15 minutes of it, it's just not that type of game. Punch Out, however, will be on my first page of channels until the day my Wii dies. You've just got to prioritize.

Is it obnoxious that Nintendo limits us in this way? Totally.
Is it a good reason to not download games you want to play? Absolutely not.

Im in no way a Wii troll, I love the Wii! ... The whole idea of the virtual console was to have easy access to old nintendo games. So you dont have to worry about looking for old carts ... the file transfer method is just ... sorta annoying. I'd just like to have it all accessable ... is that so much to ask?

So do PS3 & 360. RAM is the one thing everyone forgot to put in their consoles this time around. The PS3 & 360 would each be incredible devices with 2GB in them (which would only be $50 at cost now)

Edit: Oh, you mean storage capacity. Meh.

Count me in.
Demo-channel, Wii-Ware, and other future uses, there has to be more memory.
But what i wanted for a long time:
Has anyone of your already reached the Wii´s limit? Looking at the VC-topic there have to be a lot of people.

yeah sorry ... Maybe a mod could change "memory" to "storage"?

i am personally VERY close to reaching my limit. I think like, 200 blocks or something. I gotta check since I downloaded F-Zero X and Paper Mario

Interesting thing about that dev kit unlike prior kits is that its the same size as a retail Wii. so the Wii must have alot of room in it to house a HDD they just didnt include one sadly

How many games do you have on your Wii?
If you look at the VC-topic, there people with, well, a hella lot of games.
I dont have that much games, has to be 9 or such, and im already being afraid of my space coming to an end. And i have to download F-Zero and Paper Mario, yet...

But, anyway, there are 2 hardware-peripheries Nintendo has to sell soon:

- external HDD
- wireless headset

There's more room because there's no DVD drive.

Not quite..
Remember that those pics /information indicate that there was a (1)dummy unit just for show (with light and everything)..and (2)there were 4 Wii's on the back ..each with a different disc. Then,(3) there was that HDD unit which contained the HDD and the disc changers.

Or what Tobor posted above.. :lol

It really does. I have spare external HDDs laying around, but I can't even fit Shining Force on the built-in memory. If it takes too long, I'll probably stop caring about new VC releases and severely limit or eliminate my impulse-buying nature.

Hudson's made a killing off me so far. It'd be a shame if few others get the same chance.

You actually only have around 323MB (think that was the exact number) of free space, not 512MB. Wii got 512MB internal memory indeed, but the OS etc. takes a chunk of this space.

Yea, that does make sense, it is the only recourse.

September Surprise reggie mentioned could detail HDD and Wiiware. Harrison suggested we might see Wiiware this year not next

I didnt hear about this september suprise. If it were the HDD .. I'd be extreamly happy.

He said it at E3 in an interview with MTV. Said there was a surprise people would like by the end of september coming. HDD would certainly make alot of people happy and I doubt they have a megaton title they have hidden all this time to drop on us

I'll keep my fingers crossed ... but it does seem like it would make alot of sense. Especially with the already mentioned WiiWare stuff.

I think even 2GB/4GB SD Card support won't be enough - I think a small and stylish HDD wouldn't mess to much with the Wii's aesthetics.

I highly doubt this is the 'surprise' Reggie mentioned, though.

Im telling ya, replace the stand with a HDD stand that looks the same ... would be pretty awesome.

I wont get my hopes up. ... but it would be perfect timing.
