Then he'll have to spend $50/year on XBL and $100 on a WiFi adapter. Oh yeah and when he downloads a shitload of DLC and XBLA games he probably won't have any more room for HD movies on his 20GB drive, so he'll have to upgrade and pay a whopping $180 for a 120GB drive, and even then he still won't own the movies. Plus they'll only be 720p and will have crappy lossy DD5.1 audio at best.
Did you really save him millions?
Also, OP: Get component cables for your Wii. SMG looks 10x better with them.
Don't get me wrong, I agree. I originally played through the game on a standard def 4:3 TV and it looked PHENOMENAL. But on my HDTV that game suffers, to the point where I feel ashamed to play it. And so my second playthrough is on hold until I get component cables for the Wii.
I can't emphasize enough, though, how great Galaxy and Okami look on the TV. Especially Galaxy. Gorgeous game.
Oh, and on a side note, I didn't find Pan's depressing, although I cry at the end everytime. The writer-director (Del Toro) says he believes the magic is all real. So with that in mind, it's not that sad -- rather, it's sad and uplifting. But yeah, if you look at what the movie says about how human nature is poisoned by ideology (something we're all guilty of to a degree), then yeah, it's devastating. Fantastic movie.
BUT... PS3. Sorry to go off like that. I was wondering, is the system durable? Reliable? Does it have a low failure rate? And in the event that something goes wrong... Is Sony good at the fixing it? Nintendo has great customer service, so I was curious how Sony is.
Also, I keep hearing about Uncharted, but from the little I've seen it looks like some generic character running through the jungle shooting Mexicans. I believe you all when you say it's good, and I know better than to judge a game by its style. But if you don't mind, would the Uncharted fans tell me what they like about it?
Uncharted is one of the best single-player action-adventure games in years. It's got likeable characters, a gripping storyline with a couple of great plot twists, and some of the slickest graphics you've ever seen in a video game.
If you're unsure, then you could always rent it, but I think it's certainly worth a purchase, especially now that the trophy update is out.
I looked at the back of the TV (not easy, as it's two inches from the wall!), and I see two USB-like sockets labeled HDMI 1 and HDMI 2. Above the sockets, it says HDMI. So it looks good on that front. Are these super-cheap cables ($4?!) used or new? If they're new, damn... Talk about value.
I believe they are new, the only reason they are "cheap" is because there is pretty much no middle man and that's is the actual price for the cables.
I have another question. What are the dimensions of the PS3? I'm fairly certain my TV cabinet's lower shelf is big enough. It's very deep, and tall... But only 17 inches wide. I think the PS3 is only 12-13 inches wide... Is this correct? If so, it should fit easily.
I'm glad nobody's taken offense to my Uncharted comment, because as I said I'm sure it's a good game. I'd just need to play it -- or have somebody explain why it's so lovable -- to understand. In terms of the games I like, I always gravitate toward games that have a distinct sense of vision. Like Bioshock: it's a great-playing game made greater by a singular style -- in this case, an Ayn Rand dystopia in an Art Deco world gone nautical. Creatively, that pegs my meter all the way. Likewise, I was drawn to Okami for Zelda-style gameplay in a living brushstroke-and-woodcut world; I was drawn to Galaxy for its fantastical, anything-goes take on outer space. These game suck me in and make me feel like a kid again. And you can't put a price on that.
From the sound of it, you might like some stuff on the PSN store like PixelJunk stuff, maybe Folklore, definitely Ratchet and Clank, and maybe others if you like fast paced first person shooters.

We'll probably get lynched but I pretty much agree, I enjoyed the game though and I think it's already in the platinum line-up so you should be able to get it cheap.
- That 40GB Spiderman set is basically a dead deal. I hear a Blockbuster in Calgary might have one left, check the RedFlagDeals thread
- Get the HDMI cables linked to earlier and these for your Wii
- Uncharted has a demo

I have a 32" Vizio but lemme say the jump from composite to component with the Wii was really nice and you'll get a big kick out of how everything looks with them.
If the answer to either of these questions is "YES", get the 80 GB MGS4 bundle -- Only problem is, the 80 GB bundle will be going out of stock fairly soon...as in, a month. So you need to purchase soon if this is so.
If the answer to both of these questions is "NO", go ahead and wait for the new 80 GB PS3 without BC that will retail for $399 which should come out in September.
In regards to how Wii looks on the LCD HDTV... It looks great, actually, and that's without composite cables... Well actually, let me qualify that comment. Most games look great. Okami looks wonderful, Super Mario Galaxy looks AMAZING (but then again, when doesn't it?), and Super Smash Bros. is beautiful. That's with the widescreen setting on, too. The only games I have that don't look so hot on the TV are Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition and Metroid Prime 3. Those two look very muddled and blurry. I'll need to get better cables for the Wii at some point.
Glad to hear that. I might still see if I can get BB to hook a Wii up to the model I decide on before I pull the trigger... and then run out the door since I plan on buying my LCD from Amazon

Weird. That's one of the best looking Wii games available right now.
I'm surprised by that too. RE4 looks like shit on a stick on my DLP but MP3 is probably only second to Galaxy in it's beauty. Get those component cables right away.

PL is high on my list of movies I think everyone should she but I always prepare people I tell to see it for how brutal it is. Cartoonish violence like Sin City and 300 is far more easy to consume than the cold, stark brutality of something like PL.
I do hope the fantasy ending is the real ending though.
Does the 40GB PS3 support Wi-Fi online play? Because I have a wireless router and love using it for my Wii, but I've heard some PS3 models don't support Wi-Fi. Also, is 40GB good enough for space storage?
I'm starting to entertain the notion of a cheaper PS3 model since I can't quite get excited for MGS4, despite the critical acclaim. The game looks rather dry and colorless, and I never played the first three MGS games. I don't know. The hype here made it look good, but it's a violent game and I have young people in the house who can't watch it (and others who don't want to stomach it), and I don't have much free time so the lengthy cutscenes and slideshows seem daunting.
That's another thing I like about Bioshock -- the game never stops to tell its story, the story happens as you play, and the highly stylized world makes the violence blend in rather than stand out, unlike MGS4's blood-gushers-in-a-desert look.
Oh well, I'm just rambling. Maybe I'm bipolar when it comes to gaming. The pendulum is now swinging in the "Is it worth spending that much cash" direction.

Welcome to my life. I get buyer's remorse before I even buy anything anymore. I've talked myself into, and out of, a PS3/360 so many times it's ridiculous.

Anyone who's followed my post history even casually knows that I'm as skeptical and dour about the merits of HD gaming as any poster on this board but let me tell you that MSG4 lives up to (and for me exceeds) the hype surrounding it. I'm only half way through and I'm overwhelmed by the amount of work Konami put into it. It's definitely worth getting if you can find the bundle.
Are there any OFFICIAL specs on what the upcoming $399 80GB PS3 has and doesn't have? Official, as in, "No foolin', from the horse's mouth, this is foscho, this shit is secure"? Looking through the comments on various E3 stories, it looks like people are mostly speculating.
It sounds like the fate of backwards compatability, USB ports and SD card slots are up in the air. Here's my situation:
I never had a PS2 and I don't see myself having the time or the urge to suddenly want to play a PS2 game. Hell, my Wii already has the one PS2 game I was interested in (Okami!). So, backwards compatability is not an issue. I'm here for Blu-ray movies and upscaled DVDs first, and the occasional great, stylish PS3 game second. (Bioshock is a must; COD4 and UT3 look interesting).
I heard USB ports might drop down to two. Assuming headsets and controllers are wireless, the only thing I might use a USB port for is an adapter for a wireless keyboard and mouse (UT3 looks good). Is two USB ports enough?
On SD cards... I love SD cards, but would I need them for the PS3? Is the system's harddrive memory secure enough, or do I need backups?
And finally, online. It's VERY important to me that the PS3 be able to talk wirelessly to my router. I like Wi-Fi. Hell, I love Wi-Fi.
And I've heard about a chrome finish... I have no idea what that'd look like but it sounds pretty, so will the $399 80GB have it? Hmm.
So in summary, I think I may be sold if a $399 80GB PS3 has the following:
Chrome finish (hell, why not?)
Full blu-ray player capabilities -- it plays movies, it upscales DVDs via HDMI, etc.
Wireless controller, WITH RUMBLE (yay all-caps)
Enough USB ports to use a wireless keyboard and mouse for shooters like UT3 that support it (or is there a PS3 keyboard and mouse that talks straight to the system?)
Wi-Fi compatability!
Also, is online play on PS3 free like Wii? I think I heard it has pretty much all the functionality of X-Box Live but free of charge. Is this true, and if so, does it appear it'll stay free for the foreseeable future?

The 80 gig that is available with MGS4 has PS2 backwards compatbility, a memory card / flash read, and a memory stick pro duo slot. It may not mean much to you now, but when you see games upscaled to 1080p with smoothing. It makes a difference.
The revised 80 gig will remove two USB slots (so you have two left), no memory stick reader, and no PS2 backwards compatibility.

The hardware is easily arguably the best of this gen quality/build wise. Even judging by posts here, there seems to be very very little hardware issues. It's great stuff.
Online is free, nearly as feature filled as XBL and soon to be on par with those features, and 1st party/2nd party games use Dedicated server rigs which provides incredible online gameplay ahead of xbl and on par with PC gaming.
It's also one of the best Blu Ray players on the market, still.
Uncharted is easily the most underrated game so far this gen.
AND... HDMI is the only way to go with the PS3. Make sure to calibrate your set to the PS3.
I thought the 80gb did have a memory card reader, while the 40gb doesn't?
The basic rundown for all of your concerns regarding the ps3 is this:
-the only model w/o wireless is the discontinued 20gb sku
-there's a very low failure rate for the ps3. If there's something wrong with it, you'll know immediately, like it doesn't run the setup config upon booting, or doesn't run bluray movies. Its not a ticking timebomb, in other words.
-free online
In other words, your purchase is very worthwhile. Just make sure to get a cheap hdmi cable: they're all the same.

Me too, assuming it doesn't explode from figuring out my options first.
I've never played a MGS game before, but check out this video. It's the first time I've watched MGS4 at any length. I assume the fade-to-blacks at various points are where cutscenes would be. I'm worried that the cutscenes will be dry, interminable slideshows (and yet I could never bring myself to skip the story).
What's nice about this video, though, is that it shows me the gameplay. It seems like there's about five minutes of solid gameplay in-between each cutscene, if you know what you're doing. That's a pretty good back-and-forth, but I wonder if the balance between playing and watching is even throughout. Either way, the gameplay actually looks quite interesting. The world seems very dynamic and alive, and you're sort of surviving it all in the shadows.
Is there anyone here who played MGS4 without knowing much about the first three games? For the most part, all I know of the Metal Gear mythos is that
Solid and Liquid are super-soldiers cloned from Big Boss, Liquid's hand is grafted to Ocelot and taking over his mind, Metal Gears are nuke carriers, Outer Heaven was Big Boss' vision for a military nation, and in MGS4 war is commercialized, and major PMCs are under Liquid's control
. Given my limited understanding, would I still be able to appreciate the game's storytelling?
I like how in the video, the PMCs have announcements pimping their prowess to potential contractors. So creepy and amoral. And I like how it appears you can make progress without killing anyone. I'd like to try a blood-free playthrough, if that's even possible. Was that a tranquilizer gun he was using at the eight-minute mark?

You're just referring to a visual difference for old PS2 games, right? All PS3 games look the same on all models, though, right?
I don't have any PS2 games, so I don't really care about backwards compatability. And I'm not sure some extra USB ports are worth $100. If I end up wanting MGS4, I could get it for $60 -- that'd save me $40, nearly the price of two Blu-ray movies. I just wonder if the controller has rumble. If not, how much would buying it separately cost?
Man, Sony needs a press release for the new core package or something.
I don't think we have to do any flaming here...the PS3's 2008 lineup is clearly the best out of all 3 consoles, and personally I think Wii's Fall lineup has troubles even comparing.

Wi-Fi compatability! YES

I too am a PSWii owner (and I also bought a PS3 after the Wii like the topic creator). Honestly, I think it's the best combination outside of owning all three and I have no regrets about my decision to buy the PS3. Heck, even my parents love the multimedia capabilities of the PS3.
Me too, assuming it doesn't explode from figuring out my options first.

I'd recommend you get the 80 GB PS3 with MGS4 since it seems you have some interest in the game. You also have a basic grasp of the series, and that's all you really need to know. You don't need to have any hardcore knowledge of the series. It's a phenomenal game, and well worth your time. It can be pretty violent, but to be honest BioShock would be way more scary for children. There's a lot of dark/bloody/disturbing moments (in a good way!).
Since you never owned a PS2, I'd also suggest playing some of the previous gems in the PS2's lineup; they are VERY GOOD. Games like God of War, ICO, etc....simply need to be played.
Also, amazon.com has the 80 GB PS3s in stock now, and tax free in many states (which will save you $40 bucks or so). If you can afford it now, I'd probably get the 80 GB while you still can.
REGARDING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 80 GB MGS4 BUNDLE AND THE NEW 80 GB BUNDLE:
80 GB MGS4 Bundle:
- Has BC
- Has more card readers / USB drives (not a big deal, honestly)
- Has a Chrome Finish rather than a matte finish.
- Includes WiFi
- Includes rumble
- Includes MGS4
80 GB PS3 releasing in September:
- NO BC
- LESS CARD READERS
- MATTE SILVER FINISH (not Chrome)
- INCLUDES WIFI
- INCLUDES RUMBLE
Yet another PSWii owner here. Bought the Wii at launch, enjoyed it a lot, but missing out on so many gems of the HD consoles hurt. Picked up the PS3 when the MGS4 bundle came out; absolutely love it. Since I got the PS3, my Wii has been starving for attention. Wario should take care of that, though.
Some information about Metal Gear Solid 4:
A good friend of mine had never played a Metal Gear before, bought MGS4 and absolutely loved it. His favorite (single-player) game since Resident Evil 4. He couldn't put it down. While it was confusing at times for him, he said he understood the majority of the story. There are only a few codec conversations in MGS4, unlike the previous 3 MGS games. The vast majority of the story is told through cinematics. It has a fairly good online mode, as well. Also, just so you know, I do believe you can turn off blood if you feel so inclined. I totally feel like I'm a salesman for MGS4 right now.
PS3 infos:
The advantages of the MGS4 bundle over the 40GB/upcoming $399 80GB):
Memory Card Reader
2 more USB ports
Plays PlayStation 2 games
Includes Metal Gear Solid 4
Includes DualShock 3 (the upcoming 80GB might have this too, tho)
Since you don't seem interested in PS2 games or the memory card reader, I'd just go for the 40GB/$399 80GB. Of course, if you (for some reason) suddenly decided you wanted to play some of the (many) excellent games in the PS2 library, you'd be out of luck.
do yourself a favor and get the MGS4 bundle and buy some games for the system with arguably the best lineup for a console ever. Or just pick up a PStwo.
Yes, HDMI and Uncharted. There you go, those two things will make your PS3 experience very enjoyable.
Edit: Wow, and if you never owned a PS2, buy Shadow of the Colossus, and Ico. The graphics on Ico don't hold up all that well, but the game is still so incredibly cool and atmospheric to make it all worth it.
Pendulum now swinging in favor of MGS4 bundle. What's this about no tax on Amazon for certain states? Is Michigan one of them? Can someone link me to Amazon's details on this policy?

Now I need to sit on this (but not too long) and reach a decision. Please feel free to tell me wonderful things to help make it an easier decision.
Oh, but before I hit "Submit Reply..." Can I trust Amazon to deliver the PS3 safely? I've never ordered hardware like this off of Amazon. I'd imagine they take precautions to cushion the package and what-not.

ALSO (sorry to double-post), I was wondering if anyone can explain to me how Blu-ray players upscale regular DVDs? I take it to mean this makes them fill up the whole TV display in a higher definition? If so, I wonder where the extra pixels come from?

I just ordered the MGS4 bundle and an HDTV from Amazon.com not too long ago. Both were in pristine condition, and the box that the PS3 came in had cushioning on the sides. You have nothing to worry about.
Neiteo, do what my friend is doing for MGS4. He's watching Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel and Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel. They're 2 and 3 hours respectively. Japanese voice acting with English comic text. You could also just play the other games. They're fairly short and quite fun.
The 80GB $399 console will be the exact same as the current 40GB but with a larger hard drive and Dualshock 3 instead of a Sixaxis. Everything else will be the same configuration as the 40GB.
Edit: You can always use a powered USB hub if 2 is not enough and you need more. It will just look a little funky having it connected to the front of the PS3 but it will work fine.
Both do however the cords that ship with the systems (and I guess controllers) are horrifically short and you would be wise to invest in one or two mini-USB to USB cables that are longer.
Very very true, I was perfectly content watching movies, sporting events and playing games in SD....ever since I was introduced to HD, I cannot go back to SD anymore..
Does the Dualshock 3 have the motion-sensing capabilities of the Sixaxis? Also, is it true the $399 will only come in silver, because at E3 I think the package they showed had a black PS3. Finally, any pictures of the matte finish? Because now that someone mentioned using a USB hub, that's not much of a concern. I'm tempted once again to consider the $399 package, especially since my family isn't too keen on the idea of any PS3 right now. (It's my money but their TV) ((I'm 21 and no longer in the dorms. It'll be a while longer yet before I have my own place, much less my own 42" HDTV )).
So, has Sony released a fact sheet for the $399 80GB? Well?
