Wii Specs!!!

Wii will at least(at least hun :lol ) equel most 360 games since it doesn't have to dedicate resources to HD resolutions.

I think Wii 1st has to at least equel most Xbox games before even thinking about 360.

Some people just live in illusionland.

Wii won't be able to keep up with the very best visuals in the PS3 and 360 even without HD requirement, but from what I've seen, it will be powerful enough to provide a graphical upgrade to most of the familiar Nintendo franchises as well as third party games. But you know, not much on either console has been that impressive, and even those really impressive games fail to live up to the high expectations of 'next-gen' some of the posters on GAF are trying to sell it as. The 360 stuff for example look a lot like high end PC graphics on a TV.

Mario Galaxy certain is an order of magnitude better than Sunshine. The next Zelda and Final Fantasy will look very good no doubt.

I don't know why this is such a bad thing. PC graphics hardware is evolving at a much faster rate than console hardware is. ATI and Nvidia main business isn't supplying rival manufacturers with GPUs, it is one upping each other in the PC scene. Crysis blows away every game graphically, and it is a PC title. IF 360 can reproduce something like Crysis I will be very happy.

I'm not saying its a bad thing, but that's not really 'next' gen anymore. In fact, the moniker of Next-gen is largely a confused advertising label now. People only have a vague idea of better graphics at this point in time.

Nintendo and Sony's belated attempt to try new types of controls is really more next gen than what you see on screen, which to be quite honest, PC gamers have experienced for quite some time now, and will alway experience before even the hardest core of console games just because they can upgrade their PC graphics card every 9 months.

Ideally, I think the concept of a next -gen console is to be able to provide new experiences and that can come in the form of new controls or show the same types of games we enjoyed in the past in a more vivid and realistic way. I personally can't wait to see what Square can do with the PS3. That said, on the Wii specs issue, having see Mario galaxy I'm pretty sure Square can do an amazing looking game on the Wii that could not have been possible on the PS2 and it will take advantage of the on-line, as well as the wiimote to give new experiences. If that's not next-gen enough, then people really don't know what they want.

What about microsofts next iteration of Live on 360? This is definitely something 'next gen' , which wasn't possible on Xbox, and extremely awesome. Also their push for co-op online gameplay in every title is something which didn't happen often at all in the previous genration. These aspects is more compelling than either the PS3 or Wii controller, at least to me.

Consoles are just PCs anyway, just dedicated to one craft. Well, not really sure what the PS3 is dedicated too at the moment but I digress on that topic. ;) As far as 'next gen' terminology goes, it is accurate considering what level of quality preceded Xbox 360 and PS3. Another benefit of consoles is that nearly every ounce of that system will be used. Sure you can upgrade your PC to the max all the time if you want, but it is a waste of money to do so. That 400 dollar X360 is going to keep pace with the best PC setups 3 years from now too. Of course Vista may change this, so we'll have to wait and see.

I think being a PC gamer makes me appreciate what Nintendo are doing far more than Sony and Microsoft in regards giving me something new. PC's and Nintendo consoles have always complemented each other perfectly in my experience.

You're right. I edited my post right as you were responding. I said the same thing you did in my edited post. :)

Well, I wouldn't call Wii "next generation" in terms of visual capability either based on what we know... right now it seems to rank somewhere between Xbox/Chihiro and LindBergh on the hardware scale.

It's also somewhat misleading to class it alongside platforms like PS2 or PSP though... the architecture is inherently more capable in all areas, to the degree where it's really a clear cut step above them. It's like classing Neo Geo with Genesis and Lynx, sure they're all within the same general ballpark but the Neo is a clearly superior hardware chipset in basically every functional respect. Same goes for Wii, it capable of a level of visual output that PS2/PSP frankly can't manage well, if at all.

Fuck, do some people in this thread actually think Wii will only be capable of PS2 graphics? Christ. :lol

The fricken GC beat the PS2. Wii is more powerful than GC and Xbox. Yes, Xbox seems to have a higher CPU clockspeed (just barely), but the architectures are completely different, and I have no doubt that Wii is more capable. Just cause hardly anyone at E3 seemed to show what Wii can do doesn't mean it's worse than PS2. :lol

While there are many advancements, what wouldn't be possible on Xbox?

The entire system as it would have taken up most of the resources of the original Xbox to accomplish. Well maybe not most but a good chunk. It would take up at least half the ram (As X360 dashboard/OS takes up 32 megs). You don't think of online as a seperate component now with Xbox 360. You are directly connected with everything now and in every game.

Minus the shader units and support, I'd agree.

According to an article on Daily Tech, widely ignored during E3 but since gathering some pace, "...the Wii will ship with a PowerPC 750GX CPU jointly developed between IBM and Nintendo. Nintendo says the codename of the processor is Broadway and was manufactured using a 90nm fabrication process. IBM claims the 750GX GPU is based on the 750FX processor designed by the company several years ago. The chip can run at frequencies up to 1.1GHz and includes a 4-way set-associative single core with 1MB L2 cache."

Nice predictions to those who predicted the 750GX it seems...:) Well done...

EDIT:Hmm why is GAF blocking *****?:lol Does it think it says spunk?

EDIT2:Guess not...what is going on...?:lol

I'm new here, but I guess it's because s.p.o.n.g writes bullshit and passes it off as gamig news. I'm still waiting for Pikmin Wii to be shown...

Wii graphics still look horrible. I even expected more from Mario Galaxy. But it looks no better than mario sunshine.

I dont believe a single person on this planet can watch a Mario Galaxy video, then think to himself 'WOw, this looks horrible' without being completely warped in the head, diseased, or plain out lying. So I feel sorry for you.

I can't begin to say how powerful Wii is, not 'cos we don't know the specs, but mainly 'cos no one really even tapped the GCN. GCN has specific shaders of it's own that developers were too lazy to really look into...no one really took the hardware seriously, it was mega-capable, but developers/publishers probably didn't think it was worth the effort to really delve into it. Factor 5 was really involved with the hardware so they touched on it's power, Nintendo touched on it of course (Pikmin), but not on too many games, Star Fox Adventure's from RARE looked really good as well, and RE4 yadda yadda yadda. Point is, alot more game makers were willing to tap into PS2 & X-BOX 'cos they took those platforms more seriously. If they had taken GCN just as seriously, from the get-go, people wouldn't be questioning GCN's (let alone Wii's) capabilities. If GCN (and thus Wii) is SO piss-poor then how come Sony & MS both went to IBM (Nintendo's GCN partner) and MS went to ATi at the sacrifice of B/C?

Nintendo once stated they wanted the GCN hardware to last a long time (like 7 to 8 years). They even announced with Panasonic that GCN's chipset would be placed into other products, ie: the Q. There was even plans to release the Wiimote for GCN I'm sure, but they decided to make an all new system instead. Maybe Nintendo is blatently going with a buffed up GCN as a big "fuck you" to all the people who never took the technical marvel that is the GCN seriously. It could be argued that even the PS2 & X-BOX's potential hasn't been reached, why can't the same be said for GCN? Sony & MS are jumping to more expensive/complicated/powerful hardware, but maybe Nintendo is purposely holding back 'cos they still believe in the potential of the GCN's chipset. Pump it up a lil', give more technical support to developers so they can actually take advantage of the hardware and add the new marvelous control interface all while wrapping it in a more serious (less childish) looking package for a fraction of the cost of the competition and BAM, that's their strategy...games should be really cheap to produce as well 'cos of this "low-end" hardware as well.

I think there was suppossed to be this big BACKLASH in alot of the naysayers minds, but it never happened. Nintendo showed us games and while there was nitpicking about some of the graphics it's not like people instantly shunned it as this sickly outdated hardware. Some people on this board were actually even impressed...which means that the general public WILL be even more impressed. Alot of what we've seen is suppossedly on incomplete hardware anyways...not holding out hope that there will be some miracle graphical leap, but I'm sure things will look even better in the end.

I have a question for Drinky:
You said before E3 that you knew something about Wii that was gonna majorly dissappoint us "Ninthings". What was it? Because I'm not dissappointed!

What are you talking about? Actually there IS such news.

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2227

They updated the article now:
Updated 05/15/2006: We previously reported that ATI's Hollywood is based on the R520 family of GPUs. This is incorrect, Hollywood is actually rooted in a separate graphics family than desktop GPUs at ATI.

So the R520 part was incorrect but PowerPC 750FX processor is correct.

That article is POORLY written. Where is it confirmed that Wii has a SD slot *and* a CF slot...it doesn't. Where is it confirmed that IBM said it was based on a 750FX processor? Also...the 512MB is NOT system memory, it's flash memory for storing content, the system memory hasn't been confirmed by Nintendo.

The graphics on Mario Galaxy are great, but it's not next gen. The Xbox could do that (Conker, hello).

But still...it's not about graphics. It's about great games with great gameplay.

IAWTP. I also read in an interview with an ATI guy a while back (sorry no source) that the cube is capable of functions similar to shader units. It's just gone about in an entirely different way. The system is not modeled after a PC, so it's unfamiliar to many developers and with poor sales, just not worth the trouble. Also, the lack of RAM was extremely extremely limiting. So yeah, I think we'll see some pretty effects on the Wii, just not as many at the same time as the 360/PS3.

Whats sad is that if/when Microsoft releases thier "Xboy" it very well might outclass the Wii in specs.

:(

That is not the article S-p-o-n-g used...if there was one in the first place.

S-p-o-n-g went into much much more detail actually quoting from that supposed article...it doesn't talk about the memory like L2 cache...and other stuff in the Daily tech article.

My two cents:

We all knew that the Wii would be less powerful than the HULK PS3 or the the 360. Everyone doubts a console based soley on it's ability to make pretty pictures. Nintendo has repeated it time and time again they are going after a different market and just like the DS which is less powerful than the PSP the Wii is here to bring in a New generation. BS PR talk or not when it comes down to it Next-Gen just means paying more for an upgraded model. Sony managed to throw in blu-ray, a motion controller, and a better online service, MS expaned on their live service and they both pumped up their graphics and gave us HD. Upgrades are a good thing but in the scheme of things thats all they are upgrades. The wii is an upgrade of the GC. To doubt a machine that isn't even complete or a company that has managed to stay profittable and still give us great games, great experiences, and now a new way to play is just plain ignorant.

i dunno about the GPU...but "broadway" is not 1.1Ghz, it's 729/733mhz range.

These specs came from a false news article about NEC receiving orders from Nintendo.

Whenever solid info on the individual or complete tech of the Wii is shared, it wont be impressive enough to gain the respect of the haters....even if the specs are similar to the ones Dailytech spoke about.

that CPU clockspeed that you just posted is from the beta development kits as reported on IGN.

We have no idea how different the final kits are

I'm kinda hoping that the Wii won't have the normal console lifespan and in a few years we'll have the Wii Advance.

Well they are giving us the Wii-Advance this October/November...I'm sure we'll get the Wii-Wii Advance at some stage in 2009.

No those are final numbers listed on a sheet given to developers on what to expect. When Matt ran with that article, a "Revolution Dev-kit" that he seen in person was nothing more than a GCN devkit and the remote plugged into the memory card slot.

yeah the numbers could still change, but I doubt it (for the CPU anyway) since my friend told me during e3 what the Mhz value is. And IBM has to finish testing it in May. When you change something, they have to start testing all over again from the beginning of the list. And they've kept the same values for April and May.
