Wii U Buyer's remorse thread

My wife and I really love our WiiU. I'm sure it'll be much like the Wii, which was also my favorite console of this gen. It'll have great first party support and some unique, cool 3rd party titles that I can't get elsewhere. I don't think the console is perfect by any means (that launch line-up...), but I've really been enjoying it for what it is so far. I think it has tons of potential.

Nintendo is weird and confusing sometimes (most times), but I always end up having really memorable experiences with Nintendo consoles no matter what. As for next-gen shizz, that's what my PC is for. :)

EDIT: I also felt quite a bit of remorse for buying my Wii, DS, and 3DS during software droughts, but now the DS is my favorite console ever and my 3DS is my favorite current-gen console. The games will come eventually.

I'm an old school Nintendo fan, and die hard of some classic franchises and some of those legendary designers as well. I think the PS3 + PSP Vita combination is just brilliant and what I would have wanted Nintendo to do only a little better (in a theoretical world).

1. Nintendo DRM Management is a crime. You pay for a license it should carry over. You shouldn't have to constantly pay for the same rom dump every new hardware. Learn from SONY, Apple, etc. This is just unacceptable business practice and completely disrespectful to consumers.

2. Cross Buy, Cross Play is another brilliant SONY feature that might have been a theoretical thing thrown around at Nintendo for years, but never executed. This is just a brilliant evolution of gaming and much more useful than asymmetrical gaming.

3. Playstation Plus is one of the most fantastic things I ever heard of. Hint hint.

4. The Ambassador program from Nintendo on the 3DS i thought was brilliant. Why not make it a standard practice for everyone who buys Nintendo hardware at launch. You reward them by giving them 10 VC games. Would have been awesome to see on the Wii U and future hardware.

5. Expand their first-party portfolio. This needs to happen. SONY has done a brilliant job in investing money into Western (and a few Japanese) intellectual properties. It seems Nintendo is always stuck updating a select few of their franchises. The few interesting new ips they create, have a high probability of never leaving Japan.

6. Metascores / Online Gaming / Leaderboards - This was a huge letdown for me. Miiverse is cool, but it still seems like it is rooted in stubborn rhetoric against fun competitive gaming. It could be done in-game, but Nintendo still doesn't do it. This from the same company that made Donkey Kong!

That's my Nintendo rant for the day.
I had a long reply all typed up, but...yeah, this. If Nintendo doesn't get their act together by the end of this console cycle, the WiiU will be the last Nintendo console I'll ever buy.

That Netflix app came in handy, huh?
We don't have Netflix in France. I spent 28 hours on the browser though. Most played games: Fifa 13 with 29 hours, Nintendo land 13 hours, Miiverse (!) 11 hours, NSMBU 11 hours, Zombi U 7 hours, Mass Effect 3 and Little Inferno 4 hours, etc.

I'm at a loss though how someone who knew all the launch titles and had an idea at what was coming up during the launch window could be disappointed after their purchase. I'll admit that the slow os and battery issues for the gamepad could be reason for some, but I can't think of anyone who was looking forward to launch titles regretting their purchase over these issues. It could just be that a lot of buyers got excited over a new piece of tech and really weren't prudent shoppers.

Definietly. Like I said in my remorse post, my remorse is my own doing to a large extent. Like I found with the Vita, I shouldn't have bought the hardware on day one.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it really. Looking at the launch lineup the Wii U excited me at launch. There were at least 5 games I wanted to play, with a slow but steady trickle of games I was curious about in the early part of 2013. The problem is is that only one of those games really compelled me to play the system, and that was ZombiU, a game which I loved but in reality won't play again for a long time. NSMBU confirmed to me that I'm done with 2D Mario platformers, Nintendo Land didn't grab me and games like Sonic and BLOPS 2 I can play on other systems. Factor in Miiverse losing it's initial shine and some of the systems problems such as the slow OS, poor battery etc etc, and it's not hard to see why some will lose interest in the console despite "knowing what they were getting into".

I don't think it's as simple as a list of game names on a sheet of paper translating to being satisfied or not satisfied with a launch.

How are there people who have it unplugged already? It just came out a month ago

there's nothing to play. I admit I primarily bought into launch hype and didn't really think my purchase through properly. saying that, I gave it multiple chances. I bought zombiu, finished it. played super manrio bros u, didn't like it, felt stale. play blops 2, good game but couldn't keep my attention as I am not a multiplayer gamer, trine 2 was good but I soon got bored as I had already played it some on xbox 360, mighty switch force just wasn't my cup of tea.

there's nothing else worth playing. I'd have kept it under the telly if it allowed for blu ray or dvd playback. the fact that it doesn't means that's all but useless until there's something to play and there's nothing until lego city comes out.

Really, what's horrible about them? If you dont want to use the incredibly simple technique I just gave you, you hit the R bumper twice, hit down once, and then either do the simple search there or simply click on the type of game you're interested in (Demos, indies, GoD, Arcade). Not hard or confusing, and infinitely superior to any of the various Nintendo e-shops. Hell, it even gives you easy options to sort by popularity, rating, and release date. I'm missing how this is bad.

Hard or confusing? How is the search in eShop hard or confusing? Really now??
You're literally two finger presses away from the search when you're at the main Wii U menu, and the search has a ton more options than the basic keyword search on the Xbox.

The semi-long initial loading is stupid, though.

Mines not unplugged, but I haven't touched it since before Christmas and have no reason to play it for a long time. Last thing I played was the Rayman demo, and while it looked good and played nice, I'm not dying to play it and I won't be there day 1. After Rayman, I don't see anything else announced that I'm even interested in :(

After my oral surgery the day after Christmas I've been glued to my 360 getting caught up on all the great games I've been meaning to play for a while now including the walking dead, mark of the ninja, sleeping dogs and others. The first few months of 2013 I've also got 6 games already ordered through amazon, none of which are coming to Wiiu.

I bought the console only because I was getting 20% off retail.

I sold Brand New Nintendo Land for 35, played 2 demos.

Rayman - looks decent / on par with the PS360 Rayman however not dying to play it.
SONIC Racing - looks like shit with jaggies. I was expecting the WiiU version to at least have better IQ.

I think this console will be for when ever Nintendo decides to release a First party single player games.

I would love to play Mario U but I ain't paying full price.

The image quality of Sonic Racing on Wii U is absolutely horrendous. Not sure how it is on the other systems for comparison but it looks like a blurry mess on the Wii U, to the point where I put the game down and couldn't get back to it. Fun game, but I can't handle that lack of image quality anymore.

I haven't played the other versions, but it's my understanding that the other versions suffer similar problems. Apparently, a PC version is coming at some point. Hopefully that version will play smoothly?

Personally, the frame rate bothers me more than the image quality. But all in all, I can soldier on despite the graphical limitations, as I find it to be a really good kart racer. Though, I agree that it's a shame that they couldn't technically achieve something better here.

I was also expecting the Wii U version to look and run great. It doesn't. And it's even worse when played on the gamepad. Whereas NSMBU looks good on the gamepad, Sonic Racing looks atrocious. On my TV it's not much better but it's still a big improvement. The game itself runs like crap and looks incredibly washed out. I was a huge fan of the first game. Not this one. I was expecting better from the Wii U, but they either didn't put the effort into the port or the hardware really isnt much improved over the 360/PS3. Either way, it was a big disappointment. Someone asked how it compares to the other versions - it's pretty much the same. The devs said it has a slightly better framerate. Maybe, but I couldn't tell. It felt as uneven as the 360 demo does. It also didnt help that when I still owned the game it was broken on the Wii U. I assume they've patched it by now, but I've already sold my copy.

I figured you could at least dick around on Miiverse or something. /shrug

Miiverse is fun but mileage varies quite a lot with it. I found it a nice complement to games but not essential on its own two feet. The novelty dropped off a cliff pretty quickly for me. Not something to justify keeping the system on for.

Hopefully the PC version cleans up the IQ. I'd like to give the game another go and it's the perfect Steam Sale fodder.

The image quality on Wii U was just entirely unacceptable. I saw the amount of people loving the game across all platforms and wondered if I was just being a dick about it but glad I'm not alone.

I'm not going to give the Wii U too much grief for its mishandling of ports, since the console is still in its infancy, but I expect for this particular situation to be significantly improved 6 months outside of its release with games whose development schedules are unfettered by any commitment to meet launch or launch window deadlines.

And if things don't improve?

I never really saw the draw of Miiverse. Outside of poking around in a few communities shortly after launch, I've only really looked at the random, often times really fucking dumb stuff that people post up in NSMBU. Overall, I bought a WiiU to play games, I doubt I'll fire it up for an IMO weak social feature like Miiverse.

Id like to get one but is it true this thing has no media support other than some wonky streaming option?

Define wonky. It has Netflix and Amazon streaming. Granted it has two of the slowest implementations of those two apps, but at least it has them. Neither apps are a good reason to get a Wii U, though. Especially if you own a PC, 360, PS3, Mac, or AppleTV. If you don't own another device with the ability to stream those services, I'd say the Wii U is far from wonky. Serviceable is the word I'd use.

What's the deal with the Wii U not being able to play VC games? And yeah I know you can through Wii emulation but I mean why can't it play them itself without emulation? Being able to play some older games off screen would have been a pretty good selling point. I was also hoping that I would be able to use the gamepad/pro controller to play them instead of the Classic pro which you have to daisy chain to the Wii mote. Hopefully it'll be added in the future.

Where is the damn software?
Ninja Gaiden 3 RE Release : 11.01.13
It's not even rated here in Germany. Even Amazon.uk still hasn't got a release date.
Aliens CM: No release date
Pikmin 3: delayed, no release date

Where are the ports?

Nintendo better have some announcements in the next few days

Virtual Console files are designed SPECIFICALLY for the Wii OS.

The Wii U OS has different packaging / different architecture for its apps.

Basically, the VC games for Wii have all of their packaging assets in SD, they are designed to look like a Wii channel, and the emulators that the VC runs on...aren't updated / optimized for the Wii U system.

So the only way they could run natively and remain cohesive with Nintendo's overall design for the Wii U, is if they were re-released.

the prevailing logic is that don't buy a nintendo console for third party releases. it's for first party titles only, if you expected there to be third party titles outside of the occasional pity port job, you bought the console for the wrong reason.

not my opinion, this is what I've gathered from various posts by a large number of posters in response to complaints about the lack of third party title support.

Meaning MP4s, avis, etc.....U cant just throw these things on a thumb drive and watch them can I?

This is true but Nintendo promised something different this time and I had hopes....

You make it sound as if all if that is so difficult to fix. lol

In the software world those issues would be looked at as minor problems that could be easily fixed.

Haven't turned mine on in weeks. Fucking overscan is ruining everything.

What is this you say? I haven't heard of this issue.

Well, I assume that Nintendo would have to re-negotiate contracts with the license holders, work on the emulators to re-optimize their Wii releases, re-design the apps, and pour money into advertising / marketing for the VC features.

All of that costs time and money on a closed system like the Wii U.

This is true but Nintendo promised something different this time and I had hopes....

Nintendo always promise better third party support, they never actually get it though.

sadly this is true and while they do manage to muster some third party support, it almost always evaporates within a year, two at most. the problem is no-one really punishes them for their lack of third party support. everyone has come to accept that nintendo consoles are for nintendo games only and maybe the occasional third party exclusive, but that's it.

we're all complicit, we should feel very disappointed with ourselves, but then nintendo unveil a new mainline mario, zelda, metroid, etc and we forget all about the lack of third party support.

We're getting Bayonetta 2 and The Wonderful 101 exclusively along with Monster Hunter 3U, but Nintendo hasn't made headway with third parties? Okay.

No release dates

Late 2013 or 2014 in EU I guess.

Tomb Raider
Crysis 3
GTA IV
Bioshock
Mgs 5
MGS Revengeance
Far Cry 3
Resident Evil
Need for Speed
Dead Space 3
Devil may cry
Final Fantasy

This is Third Party support, no matter if those games are good or not.

The Wonderful 101 is "launch window", and Monster Hunter 3U is March 2013. Maybe you should look into your claims before you make them.

But that means you have to actually do research instead of saying whatever comes to mind first! We can't have that.
