Wii U owners, is the Pro controller worth buying?

Pro is the best controller Nintendo has made.

My only issue with the pro controller is that when my hands are positioned on the thumbsticks, it's kinda hard for my right hand to reach Y & B comfortably. It gets kind of annoying after a while.

Bulky triggers, incredibly stiff Z button, odd placement of face buttons, tiny and stiff D-pad, nipple right stick, asymmetrical shoulder buttons, and a short cord that caused me to accidentally pull the system off the TV stand...

I think I might hate that controller.

If you have a classic controller pro I don't see the point, but if not I'd say yes. Makes games like SM3DW and MK8 much more comfortable to play, and I suspect Smash will be a considerably better experience with it versus any other control method.

a) That's not a WaveBird, and
b) The GameCube controller was easily the most ergonomic and comfortable pad of its generation, but the button positioning is extremely awkward for many modern games and it has several elements (like that yellow camera stick) that have not aged well in retrospect.

It's a great controller, but honestly, i don't think you "need" it at all. Best feature is its insane battery life. But other than that, it doesn't offer much over the gamepad, except maybe for some, better ergonomics. I just use the gamepad all the time, and only have the Pro controller because it was part of the ZombiU bundle. Actually, because the Dpad and face buttons are placed rather centrally, my thumb hits the buttons from a different angle compared to the gamepad, and i sometimes end up hitting the wrong button because of it.

I don't get the issue others seem to be having with the gamepad, other than the battery life.

I got one at xmas with my wii u. Never used it til MK8 came out the other day. Maybe I got a bad controller but the dpad is the stiffest dpad I've ever used from any controller. At first I didn't even think the dpad worked because I was already using considerable force to push it. Then I realized I had to have the might of Hercules to get it to do anything. You have to put a ridiculous amount of pressure on it, it's super uncomfortable to use. One of the shoulder buttons didn't respond well either.

I need to get a new one for Smash Bros I guess.

Holding it and using both sticks feels very comfortable with the Pro. Its more comfortable than the 360 GC or PS controller I think.

The pro controller is a great alternative, although lately I have been noticing messed up input in mario kart 8 (my kart would drive the OPPOSITE way of what i was trying to do). Not sure what that's about but it's happened at least 3 times.

I agree on most points, except for the button placement. Every game has one button that is the main button. In this case, the other buttons were placed in function of it, and were easily identifiable. To me, the button placement felt more natural and had a clear hierarchical order to them, making many games/controls less confusing. Also loved them for playing Burnout with manual gears; you could shift up or down and brake without ever having to let go of the gas.

So basically, it's exactly the same as playing with the GamePad, except the two things that are terrible on the GamePad are great instead? :P

Having a primary button is okay, but the problem on the GameCube is that the secondary buttons are much harder to use in a number of situations. (Same issue with that Z button.)

Yeah, I've used four or five of these and yours is fucked up.

Amazing controller although sticks could be convex. Ultra comfortable and battery lasts for months.

Prefer it over the gamepad every time.

I just read a bit of this thread and I got duped! hah, I bought it off ebay for $30. A white controller. This was right around the time best buy was getting rid of white ones for $25 so I thought everything was cool.

Darnit!

I literally just placed mine in the trash after watching that knockoff video a couple pages back.

Best controller i've ever used, best battery life of any controller i've ever used.

Only negative is non-analogue triggers, but not too big of a deal.

Not to mention the horrible D-Pad.

i have a couple games on my wii u and was wondering if it was worth me buying the pro controller for these games

Zelda HD
SM3DWorld
Earthbound
NSMB Wii U

and in the near future ill be buying:

Mario Kart, SSB Wii U, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong, W101,Sonic

Does the controller enhance the experiences for certain games or is it not worth it in the long run? i havent had any problems using the wii u gamepad, but wouldnt mind have a specific controller for certain games like i did with my Wii

Yes for SM3DW, Wii U Virtual Console games, NSMBU and Mario Kart 8. But the VC games are fun to play on the tablet too.

I just bought this controller a couple hours ago and I'm loving it! Looks like this might be my controller when playing MK8 or I'll keep switching with wiimote+nunchuk.

Great controller but the calibration is always bonkers for me.
MK8 and bam......steers me left or right without my input. Pretty annoying and i don't mess with the sticks on startup either.

Anyway to fix it? couldn't find any info

I enjoy it, but then again I got it for $10 at Best Buy. Dunno if I'd be as OK with it if I'd paid $30-$40.

Seeing a lot of Gamepad hate too unfortunately. I really like the feel and layout of it and choose it over the pro controller 90% of the time.

Those are FAKE!! I bought the white one not too long ago and it was totally a counterfeit. I know the box looks legit, but they are totally fake!

DO NOT BUY ANY WII U PRO CONTROLLERS FROM CHINA!

Hmmm. When the uploader mentioned what's in the back of the controller, that's entirely what I have on my controller though it says "Nintendo" and not "Niniendo".

For people who have Pro Controller and watched the link, do you guys have the same description at the back of the controller?

edit: I think the guy used as an example in the video was from a Europen Pro controller hence why is it different I guess?

European?

edit2: Never mind. Yeah, this is a EU Pro controller because of GroĂźostheim on it.

Why would that be? They are much easier to find, because they are placed around the big A button which has your thumb hovering over it.

I said, for some; I have no problem with the gamepad, and in terms of ergonomics, it's no GCN controller. So battery life... but no touchscreen for quick access, typing, inventory etc... so no, not the same. And to me, no, not better either, not in a long shot. Especially since i find the face buttons to be placed too far left.

Gamepad with the high-capacity battery, yo!

Seriously, I still need to get a U pro controller, and the HC battery in the gamepad is not helping me : )

As a result of this thread, I purchased a Wii U Pro controller (check out my post a few pages back).

It's....ok. I really don't like the feeling of the bumpers and overall the controller definitely feels cheap in comparison to the DS4 or 360 gamepad.

Battery life is great though and overall I'd say that it's a good controller. Definitely not my favorite though.

Yes. It's my go-to controller, I switch off the gamepad display when I can. I'm just not interested in playing with the big, unwieldy gamepad. I'd love for a firmware update that allows me to switch on my console with the pro controller that doesn't turn the gamepad on. I find the size and weight of the gamepad uncomfortable, thankfully off screen play doesn't appeal to me very much.

It's a great controller, especially if you are going to be playing local multi.

Anyway, am I the only one who didn't like playing with the Wavebird in Smash Bros? Felt like there was some input lag. I felt like I was at a disadvantage against people with wired controllers. I love the Wavebird but it Smash it was a no go for me. So I don't plan on buying the GCN adaptor for Wii U since the wired controllers are so fucking short and the Wavebird has lag in Smash.

Zombi u and lego city are my least played wii u games because they do not support the pro controller.

It really has gotten to the point that I just never touch the wii u without using one. Fortunately, plenty of other games do.

IMHO the Pro controller is a must if you own a WiiU. Especially if you have friends and want to play local multiplayer. Making friends play MK8 via Wiimote is just mean.

Honestly the Pro controller is brilliantly comfortable in your hands. Honestly it is the most comfortable one I can remember. Its a shame that the 'triggers" are not actual analog triggers. That would make it my all time favorite controller.

TLDR: BUY ONE!

I bought the uboost for $7 at TRU and it is pretty amazing. I dont even use the pro controller now, especially since the quick start update.

Absolutely. But I'm pretty sure some games don't support it so it depends on what you would be playing. I used it for DKC: Tropical Freeze and Mario Kart 8 and I love it for those games. I forget if I used it with Super Mario 3D World or if I used the gamepad while playing that, but regardless I'd imagine it would work very well with that game too.

The controller just feels good and the battery life is amazing. I bought two when they were on sale for $10 each. I charged both of them up but the battery life has lasted so long on the first controller that I haven't even needed to switch to using the second one yet.

As far as feeling cheap, the components are the same as the gamepad and most other Nintendo controllers. That means high quality buttons and sticks. If you take the Pro and try to twist it with both hands, it will not bend or twist. It's obviously sturdy, solid stuff. The only part that feels "cheap" is the glossy surface, which I don't like. However, that's not a matter of material quality but a conscious design decision (one I disagree with).

Its a shame that the 'triggers" are not actual analog triggers. That would make it my all time favorite controller.

I said it in another thread. I'll say it in this one: I prefer the shoulder buttons as is. The action is lower, faster, and clickier. They're better for almost every type of game because it's easier and faster to press the buttons. The only genre it's not good for is vehicle sims.

Definitely, I've been playing MK8 at my friend's place with the Pro controller and it feels much more comfortable than the GamePad, I gotta say though, I was never a fan of the GamePad and couldn't care less about Off-TV Play.
