What would be the reasons for showing it behind closed doors?
It's a game developer's conference, not a trade show for the press. It makes sense to drum up excitement for the cryengine for developers.

Because ~*Nintendo*~
my theory is similar. To be honest, I don't think MS is as interested in gaming as people think. I think they want to push Sony out, for sure, but I think they're overall goal is to slowly slip away from "core" gaming and into full on entertainment centre with casual gaming experiences here and there. What I'm saying is I think MS is using gaming to get into a different broader market, meanwhile a company like Nintendo is in it for the gaming, but will do broad things as well, as a side thing and not their real focus.I actually think Microsoft is more concerned with trying to drive Sony out of the console market than competing with Nintendo. If MS does go with a tablet controller like Nintendo that would put immense pressure on Sony to follow suit which might further hurt their Vita business, or it might pressure them to re-emphasize the connectivity, but even then I'm not sure for all the connectivity Vita may have with the PS4 that it would have the same degree of functionality of the Wii U tablet.
If this scenario played out at all it would be much harder for Sony to attract third party developers even for ports because with 2/3 of the consoles going tablet controller that means developers would tailor their games more around the controller rather than tacking it on as some currently fear with the Wii U.
Because GDC is primarily a developers conference and doesn't have the big marketing/PR backing that E3 does. E3 planning has already begun no doubt, so they're focusing on that for all the public/press reveals while at GDC is mainly for talking with devs. What would be the reasons for showing it behind closed doors?

There's a rumor going around that Crytek will be showing a CryEngine Wii U demo behind closed doors at GDC.
We'll probably not find out either way if it actually happened, but I would go ahead and label this as pretty damn credible.
the enemy of my enemy is my friend...I've been hoping for awhile now that MS sees things that way.
I know!Wii only and only 10 games? That sounds like gamer hell to me.
A company with top notch technology shows a demo on a new Nintendo console.
Hm.
I'm a Wii-only gamer, and I have about 10 games for it. It's not as horrible as it sounds.
I agree with all of that. In the end I think what you said initially will happen. MS will release a tablet like controller, then Sony will be forced to do the same, and then they'll be fucked because they'll be the last to join the party, plus the vita confusion assuming the vita is still selling for that steep price by then.I don't think we have data points to know how probable that is yet. It's certainly possible in the long term but that's probably too far down the road to predict.
Sony though... is such a wild card. The more I think about it the more I think have a new Dual Shock as the default design without massive changes (such as a tablet screen) would be a huge mistake. I know Sony is into the high end tech scene but they've been so regressive on controller design and unwilling to take chances and commit to new designs. I think all of the consoles, regardless of power will be close enough any differences there won't matter. Next gen I predict will be decided on exclusive games and innovative and interesting controls.
Wii U-3DS-Vita-PC for me going forward. Anything further depends on whether or not more Japanese games flourish on the other consoles or one offs like the Capcom fighters, Platinum Games' output, or some really break out game happens on the other systems.

What is the source for the rumour?
Not Arkham.

It would be nice to see cryengine on the Wii U but does anyone other than Crytek use that engine?
wsippel I think? He was the poster that originally told us about the bump in dev kits a few weeks back iirc before any of the big sites picked up on it
You can read it in its entirety here: http://press.nintendo.com/object?id=9058I have been asked many times how we decided to develop these games... so I
thought maybe this is the first story I should share with you today.
Where did this idea come from? I'm sure you can guess... it started where all
great creative ideas begin... from a board of directors!
Europe!
(Not getting any more specific than that, so you guys can feel free to believe this or not.)
I didn't even realize it but wsippel says the same thing in a different thread:Europe!

Not really all that surprising, is it? It's a new platform, Crytek and Epic confirmed support, and GDC is the opportunity to show your middleware to potential licensees. And I hear Crytek UK recently readied a Wii U demo they're quite eager to show.
I didn't even realize it but wsippel says the same thing in a different thread:
unless that was your source lol. Or he is using you as a source.
Alberto has friends in the industry and has been correct before.
well that's good, and yeah it doesn't even sound hard to believe. Hopefully someone who sees it spills something rather than us seeing it 3 months later. It wasn't, but
There's another former GAF poster who does know his stuff about European gaming industry goings-on and I wasn't sure about posting the rumor until he mentioned it, as well.
That's all the hints I can give on this one. I think the rumor is more credible than not.

How about a good DBZ-style summary of the current WiiU saga?
We're still in the Garlic Jr. saga where everyone's power is uncertain [srsly, Gohan and Piccolo got nerfed] and Toonami hasn't picked up the new episodes (GDC news) yet.
People lambasted him about something Zelda-related though
What now?
*tips hat*As credible as the last one, perhaps a bit less???
Or 2 to 5 times as credible???

Wonderful news. Get excite.
Don't. It's not like we're going to see any of Timesplitters until E3.

Mike Capps of Epic games, who made the garden demo for WiiU, says on twitter that they will show some demo's using the unreal engineMike Capps said:Just reviewed all projects and GDC @UnrealEngine demos. I felt like a proud papa. Demo made people gasp, literally.
What is the source for the rumour?

Nope, they'll just create a new NintendoWare. Nintendo has a lot of very experienced tech guys and nearly unlimited ressources.I'm going to throw out an off-the-wall prediction: Nintendo will be licensing CryEngine as the official engine for all of their big next-gen titles.
