The ad was alright. It obviously has some pretty lame moments (sping, sping, sping), but they said it was a new console, showed off-TV play, showed that some games will use both screens, and they showed a few different genres of games. Overall that's a decent start, but obviously that pitchman-style likely won't work in NA and they will have to dedicate some ads to showing some form of online functionality as well as doing indiviual ads that don't rush through everything.
As far as playing on the GamePad is concerned, (since a mini-argument has broken out over it) all I can say is for me it's a great feature, though I understand why some don't care. I'm definetly a "hardcore" gamer, I've bought every home console from Sony, Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft and have been playing games for as long as I can remember (so I think that counts).
So when I think of playing on the GamePad (keep in mind I do live alone, so this is coming from a gamer that can use his TV the way he sees fit) the first thing that pops in my head is when a TV show or sporting event I want to watch is on TV. There are certainly times when I get into a game and want to keep playing only to realize that the baseball/football (or something) game is about to start, and even though I'm into my video game I want to watch the TV because I can play the game at a later date, but the TV show I'm planning on watching is live, so the game gets put down, even though I feel like I want to keep going.
And for anyone wondering why, if you can play whenever would you care about quiting, well I believe there is a study out there that the majority of people do something else when they're watching TV (tablet, phone, pc, eating, even reading) and I definetly feel like I would be involved in that stat (I'm watching baseball and typing this right now), but you know what I would prefer playing a console game to mindless web-surfing. So if I have a controller that gives me the option of playing a video game and looking up at the TV when I hear something happening, it's a nice bonus. And since it's a feature that can lead to a gamer putting more time into video games, I see the reason to show that.
Obviously when people are over this feature can be a nice bonus as well, though I really would like to see them show asymetrical gameplay in this scenario, as someone coming over and using the big-screen while the other uses the GamePad is probaly a better "visit" feature.
With the Wii U Nintendo doesn't have an obvious pitch like it did with Wii (easy to pick-up controller for people that don't play games). So I completely understand why one of their main focus points might be showing off a feature that has a potential use to every demographic (hardcore, casual, non-gamer). Off-TV play is really the only thing everybody from a hardcore gamer to a non-gamer could have interest in, except TVii, but the UK won't be getting that right away, so it's not really an option (NoA should definetly focus a lot on that though).
