Wii U TV campaign launches next week, 60-second ad to air during X Factor

No they didn't. The Wii-U is supposed to have competent online features this time around, how much of that was shown to the hardcore gamer? None!

They didn't even mention how powerful it was, they don't need to have spreadsheet facts, but they needed to state that this is the most powerful console at this point in time, instead they showed every side gimmick with 4 seconds of game footage for each game.

I'm pretty sure hardcore gamers already know what the Wii U is, this ad is more likely aimed at 'casuals'...

Off tv play is huge.

Its so big that, you know all the other WiiU selling points? Yeah, they will mean nothing next to Off tv play.

Seriously? It's someone who's an avid player of video games.

Though I feel like I'm wandering into a semantic trap here...

But that was my point. It's not useful to THEM. It's only useful for everyone else in the household as it's an excuse to kick them off the TV.

They get kicked off the TV anyway so of course its useful to them

I wouldn't go that far but I know that's a huge plus for me without a doubt. Perfect for those days you just wanna curl up in bed and play a game.

Agreed. I just beat Darksiders 1 on my PS3 and was feeling burnt out on the game but that doesn't even matter with WiiU Darksiders 2 since that has off tv play. Not to mention that it took me four months to play 15 hours of Darksiders and beat it. This wasn't because I was burnt out but because I just don't bother getting everything ready to play on a tv. (problem with the way my rooms setup. I basically have to turn sideways on my bed to see the tv, where there is no wall behind me, get in the middle of the bed, get some covers and a pillow up behind so I have something to fall back on, then play the damn game.) With off tv play, I am sure that I could beat Darksiders 2 in a month on WiiU.

I just hope all of the games support it unless they use both screens like Nintendo Land or ZombiU. I don't like buying a game on a system (like Darksiders PS3) and then buying the sequel on a different system (unless its the only choice) but I may do that for quite a few games like DS2, Mass Effect 3, etc. i just hope WiiU has a proper online achievement system because I don't wanna have to choose. (I really don't get many achievements/trophies but its nice when I do get one.)

Anywayz: liked the commercial. The 18th can't come soon enough!

This was the commercial advertising the system and not game specific. Game specific commercials are always the best. How much can be shown/talked about an entire new console/controller and all it's possibilities and how it changes gameplay in just 60 seconds? It was going to be difficult advertising this thing, so the more people try it out for themselves (rolling launch) the better.

Seriously, when did this become a thing? I've never. Never. Heard it mentioned...Seriously, at all...I think :/

Hows it look on the XL firstly and how well does it stream?

I also had no idea you got Netflix on 3DS in the US. Though I'm not convinced watching films on my 3DS is something I'd want to do.

It is useful to them. Unless they're dicks, they're already ceding time away to roommates or family. This way, they can play even when everyone else is using the tv.

But portable devices already exist that allow you to play games without a TV! Hell, Nintendo have been making them for years!

I guess I just don't see the attraction of playing the type of games I'd be playing on a TV on a portable device. I mean, that's the problem we've all identified with the Vita, right? Nobody wants to play Call of Duty hunched over a small screen, they want to play it sprawled on the couch.

Thats only one of vita's many problems and more specifically that problem with vita is you can only play it on a small screen whereas with wii u you can flip between the 2 as and when needed

don't see the problem with it, honestly. They're trying to sell the features most people will probably be excited about...we're all pros here so of course it doesn't satisfy us and it all appears a bit trite and cheesy

as Brad Pitt before it would say, it was inevitable

The ad was alright. It obviously has some pretty lame moments (sping, sping, sping), but they said it was a new console, showed off-TV play, showed that some games will use both screens, and they showed a few different genres of games. Overall that's a decent start, but obviously that pitchman-style likely won't work in NA and they will have to dedicate some ads to showing some form of online functionality as well as doing indiviual ads that don't rush through everything.

As far as playing on the GamePad is concerned, (since a mini-argument has broken out over it) all I can say is for me it's a great feature, though I understand why some don't care. I'm definetly a "hardcore" gamer, I've bought every home console from Sony, Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft and have been playing games for as long as I can remember (so I think that counts).

So when I think of playing on the GamePad (keep in mind I do live alone, so this is coming from a gamer that can use his TV the way he sees fit) the first thing that pops in my head is when a TV show or sporting event I want to watch is on TV. There are certainly times when I get into a game and want to keep playing only to realize that the baseball/football (or something) game is about to start, and even though I'm into my video game I want to watch the TV because I can play the game at a later date, but the TV show I'm planning on watching is live, so the game gets put down, even though I feel like I want to keep going.

And for anyone wondering why, if you can play whenever would you care about quiting, well I believe there is a study out there that the majority of people do something else when they're watching TV (tablet, phone, pc, eating, even reading) and I definetly feel like I would be involved in that stat (I'm watching baseball and typing this right now), but you know what I would prefer playing a console game to mindless web-surfing. So if I have a controller that gives me the option of playing a video game and looking up at the TV when I hear something happening, it's a nice bonus. And since it's a feature that can lead to a gamer putting more time into video games, I see the reason to show that.

Obviously when people are over this feature can be a nice bonus as well, though I really would like to see them show asymetrical gameplay in this scenario, as someone coming over and using the big-screen while the other uses the GamePad is probaly a better "visit" feature.

With the Wii U Nintendo doesn't have an obvious pitch like it did with Wii (easy to pick-up controller for people that don't play games). So I completely understand why one of their main focus points might be showing off a feature that has a potential use to every demographic (hardcore, casual, non-gamer). Off-TV play is really the only thing everybody from a hardcore gamer to a non-gamer could have interest in, except TVii, but the UK won't be getting that right away, so it's not really an option (NoA should definetly focus a lot on that though).

What portable device can I play on the tv when I'm able to? The gamepad doesn't suddenly turn a home console into a portable. Rather, it allows me to play a home console without a TV when it's not available.

But why is this such a crucial feature? Nobody has expressed any sort of desire for such a hybrid console in the past...

It's not something that is necessary, but it's better than not having it. Nobody was begging for this, but there are times people would have used it if they could have. My personal view is that Nintendo is making this one of their main features because it's one of the features that can appeal to every demographic. Gamers can take advantage of it (even if it's not necessary, it's useful) and non-gamers can benefit from it as well.

I wasn't begging for it before it was announced, but since E3 2011 I've been really anticipating being able to play my console games without using my TV. A lot of times I'll be torn between playing a game or watching some sports on TV or something, but the Gamepad allows me to do both at the same time, which is awesome.

Jesus, you KNOW what it has, these ads aren't for you, or hardcore gamers. They're for everyone else. Can't be that hard to figure that out.

The Ad did what it needs to do, sell the thing based on it's unique features, It has off-tv and a-sync gaming, what other gaming console offers that? Maybe it's not motion-gaming-level novelty, but at least it's novel.

By the way, the off-tv aspect is f'n huge for me, my brother turns on the Wii randomly, while I watch my TV shows, and I won't start a fight over that because my mom will tear me apart. With this new console I hope my brother can freaking share and be less selfish. And I'm big bro by the way :p

^yeah not every game will offer that, though. For now it's been confirmed only NSMBU, Darksiders 2 and Mass Effect 3 will feature offscreen gameplay

Exactly. I know in the past I would have loved to continue playing a couple of my console games on my controller if I could have.

Regardless of how we feel about the quality of the ad or the narrator, it does at least serve the purpose of boiling down everything into easy-to-understand bullet points. They had to introduce a number of concepts the general public is not familiar with, so Nintendo UK got right in their face and spelled it out for them. After this ad has been out a while and people know what a Wii U is, they can then move onto more specific things like the games, TVii, and Miiverse.

Another thing to keep in mind is how many people get their information online. It will be interesting to see how they manage their online presence via social media, they could be a lot more effective in getting the word out that way.

lol at the chick saying "I want to watch the TV now". It's like she's depressed or upset the dude's playing the Wii U, kinda gives the whole commercial negative vibe.

For God's sake someone just wake up Iwata and tell him he has to do a Nintendo Direct right now! People are just using this thread to warm their hearts at this point. If this continue someone will be dead by the end of the week and will be all on you Nintendo!!!

One is trying to sell you something ... the other is trying to sell you something RIGHT NOW!

That didn't really help - am more confused :p
Is one like a shopping channel type thing? CALL THIS NUMBER - *NOW*

We don't really have the separate forms in the UK, least not in a way I 'identify' anything here. There just 'ads' in all forms.

The "pew pew" was the only really offensive part of the commercial - that's just too cheesy.

The gamer in me wishes that commercial was more exciting, but I know this commercial will be effective at telling the people watching X-Factor (read: average casual consumer) what the deal is with this brand new console with this brand new controller. I wish they mentioned something about graphics, but by not emphasizing the graphics they reduce the potential scrutiny on them (especially if third parties don't put their best efforts in).

A commercial usually has some kind of narrative to it.
An infomercial usually features a dude just spitting information at you. Though they often end with "Buy now for $X"

I've always called it teleshopping, you know that insomnia-curing shite on ITV2 at late night? That stuff
