Wii U Virtual Console - News and Releases

My guess is Nintendo will expound upon their DS VC games on Wii U plans among other things. He also mentioned "we've gotten over the issues with VC releases", so maybe that'll result in something. It'd be kind of pointless to say those things to investors if you had nothing ready in the near term...

Could you (or anyone really) supply the context of that quote? I am under the assumption that it was merely a poorly translated announcement of DS virtual console for Wii U.

Are N64 and Gamecube games out of the question at this point?

N64 is still likely at some point. They actually announced that along with GBA, close to a year ago with no follow-up. They would never confirm Gamecube when asked and it is actually doubtful, considering Zelda:WWHD's success. I wouldn't be surprised to see Luigi's Mansion HD in the Direct though.

It's really hard to get excited about VC releases on the Wii U that were already on the Wii.

Just this week Europe is getting a title that wasn't on the Wii VC (Dr. Mario). I'm still glad about every game that gets rereleased, because I like the upgrades that come with a WiiU version. They just have to release more games every week.

N64 was announced at some point a while back I hear, so I doubt they're out of the question (the Wii VC had them). GameCube... I kind of doubt considering how much trouble they're having with even keeping parity with the Wii VC.

Oh, it may have just been poorly translated I guess. I wasn't sure.

I've seen this misquoted a few times. Please understand

We are now sure that we can solve the technical problem of displaying Virtual Console software from Nintendo DS on the GamePad.
The dual-screen Nintendo DS, one of which is a touch screen, has a very strong software lineup, and so we plan to add the Virtual Console titles from Nintendo DS software to the future Virtual Console lineup for Wii U.

SMB: Lost Levels is releasing for the Wii U VC tomorrow in the US.

EU gets Double Dragon €4.99 (£3.49) AND Super Dodge Ball €4.99 (£3.49) this week.

Also isn't the EU getting Super Mario Kart on the VC around the release of Mario Kart 8 or something?

This is fucking unacceptable. They promised us SMB3 before the end of 2013, and in mid March of 2014 we are still waiting for it. It's not even just that one game that pisses me off either; I'm not in any particular hurry to play a game I've played literally thousands of times already, but the drip feed bullshit has got to stop. It's also infuriating that Nintendo insists on depriving their biggest market when it comes to this service. Where are the TG-16 and Square-Enix games Japan is getting? How come we can't have two games a week on each system? What the fuck happened to N64 games, of Genesis games, or fucking Donkey Kong Country; games Nintendo should full well be within their rights to release. Virtual Console is the most disappointing thing about Nintendo, and surprising given how much it'd help their piss poor bottom line these days.

Sorry for the rant... I just can't stand it anymore.

I know you saying about usa vc, but i have to say that the japan vc is good in my opinion. I don't use much (if at all, only bought the 30 cent games and the mystical ninja series). I'm still waiting for N64 games, but every week there's three games. Sometimes even more (sometimes less too, but i don't remember having less than two in a week) and Nintendo usually releases a lot of stuff. They already released most of the Marios (will release Mario 2 usa next week).

I don't know why the usa shop doesn't get the same treatment. Konami and Squenix releases a lot of games on the japanese vc.

Given the pattern of recent VC releases, and the delayed network maintenance, I'd be willing to bet they were planning some kind of cross-buy for SMB3 but had to delay it. They're instead filling their "big first-party VC" slot with a stopgap.

Oh sweet. Never had the chance to play Lost Levels. Hope it is as hard as people say.
And about Super Mario Kart:
The Super Nintendo classic Super Mario Kart will release on Nintendo eShop as a Wii U Virtual Console title on 27th March 2014. As part of a promotion to celebrate both this legendary title and Mario Kart 8, fans who purchase Super Mario Kart on Nintendo eShop from its release until 30th June 2014 can get a discount of £5.49 on Mario Kart 8 if they choose to purchase Mario Kart 8 on Nintendo eShop from the release of the game until 30th June 2014, providing the purchase takes place on the same Wii U console.

I actually would be satisfied if our service was treated a well as it is in Japan. The fact is though, we Americans have been getting the short end of the VC stick for way too long, and it doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. Flashback to 2005 when the VC was announced for the first time, and I was more excited for it than anyone. Now every time Nintendo releases a single pointless game each week, I die a little inside. This is no way to honor their rich history in gaming, that's for sure.

So what are the chances of the Donkey Kong Country Trilogy hitting the Wii U virtual console?

I am also still waiting for more SNES game to hit like Demon's Crest.

It's like ps1/ps2 classics. Japan gets everything while the rest of the world gets table scraps.

If I have to praise MS for anything it's that the xbla was consistent for worldwide releases...dunno if that has changed but if it was released in america 99% of the time it got released in EU or Japan the same day.

Something strange is going on and since the last major firmware update was back in September. There most definitely seems to be something eShop related going on in the background especially given the half-bridge they worked out with NNIDs at the end of last year. Mario 3 being a bridge game makes lots of sense. But they do need Lost Level out in time for NES Remix 2 in April so it was expected as well.

While I also thought of the cross-buy theory, why would they release the game in Japan and Europe already if that's the case? Mind you, I'd like to believe this'll happen sooner than latter. There was an Emily Rogers' rumor last year, stating that if you had VC games in your 3DS, you could buy the Wii U version at a discounted price and viceversa, a lá Wii to Wii U. How I'd love to see that materialize, especially considering I'm an ambassador.

If we had the quality and diversity of the Japanese Wii U VC, I would never complain about it. I'm preaching to the choir, but we get 1 NES game a week. Not cool or obscure NES games like Crystalis or Faxanadu or Willow or Legacy of the Wizard. Just common early NES games that range from classic to unplayable.

It's more like if NOA hasn't released it but realizes that maybe they can make a play with it, then perhaps they will. The regions are mostly independent with eShop releases so it's not like every region will do the same thing. See Dr. Mario or SMBDX promotions for example.

Because all the momentum toward a unified digital account is probably coming from NoA. Thus, NoA is probably reserving the game (which it knows people are highly anticipating on both platforms).

Well, you fellas may be onto something; Emily Rogers stands by her words.

3DS and Wii U now share eshop balances and NNID accounts. In the future, cross platform discounts should happen.

Nintendo still plans to do the cross platform discount stuff in the future. It's just another delayed thing like the web eshop.

I think the US is getting the NES game Volleyball for their VC tomorrow.

Also the EU VC gets Super Mario Kart, Mighty Bomb Jack AND Ninja Gaiden this week. Pretty cool if you ask me =).

Also the EU gets Advance Wars as their first GBA title next week (4/3).

maybe... *puts down Dark Souls 2*

Yeah, looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me. :)

Well maybe I can help a bit :).

Super C - 2/13
Ice Hockey - 2/20
Renegade - 2/27
NES Open Tournament Golf - 3/6
Super Mario Bros.: Lost Levels - 3/13
Volleyball - 3/20

And here are the GBA games + SMB3:

April 3:
Advance Wars (Wii U, $7.99): Command air, ground and naval forces in strategic turn-based battles to drive back the vibrant armies of several scheming generals. Order troops carefully, then watch as tanks obliterate enemies and jets go head-to-head in midair dogfights. Can you fend off an army of elite strategists? It's your move.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (Wii U, $7.99): Leap and level up as Mario and Luigi simultaneously in their first role-playing adventure as a team of Bros. When an evil witch replaces Princess Peach's voice with explosives, the Bros. must venture beyond the Mushroom Kingdom to save her. Control each bro separately or together, then team up to unleash Bros. Attacks on Fawful's fan-favorite face.

Metroid Fusion (Wii U, $7.99): Your mission: Eradicate the X parasites and the mutants they infect. Power up with the Fusion Suit to annihilate your enemies in this action-packed side-scroller set on an isolated research station. Along the way, you'll find game-changing items like the Space Jump as you lose yourself in the blissful solitude of this eerily engrossing adventure.

April 10:
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror (Wii U, $6.99): When the going gets tough, Kirby gets cloning. Call in colorful clone reinforcements to aid Kirby in blasting, bashing and smashing his foes. With a new menace at his side, Dark Meta Knight is corrupting the sprawling, mazelike Mirror Kingdom. Join the famous pink puffball on an adventure to save the land in this classic platformer.

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! (Wii U, $6.99): Get ready for video games done Wario-style. In the game that started the WarioWare, Inc. empire, Wario has a plan to get rich quick. Skate, jump, scare and shoot your way through more than 200 frantic, rapid-fire microgames of every type, from retro classics to sports games to sci-fi shooters that anyone can pick up and play.

April 17
Super Mario Bros. 3 (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, $4.99): Jump, swim and fly through one of the greatest and most beloved Super Mario Bros. games of all time. In this timeless NES classic, you'll battle through over 70 baddie-infested courses and face off against the infamous Koopalings. Bowser and the Koopalings are causing chaos yet again, but this time, they're going beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into seven neighboring worlds. Lucky for the brothers, they have more power-ups than ever before. Fly above the action with the Super Leaf, swim faster as Frog Mario or turn into stone and drop onto enemies as Tanooki Mario. You can even choose your path on the map to reach the end of the World. There, you'll have to pass massive Airships filled with cannons and fire traps to reach a showdown with one of the Koopalings.

F-Zero: Maximum Velocity (Wii U, $6.99): Get your adrenaline pumping and race plasma-powered machines till your knuckles turn white. Boost down some of the most dangerous tracks in the universe and strive for victory at all costs, even if it means ramming your opponents off the road. Revel in your accomplishments and climb the Grand Prix standings to unlock tracks and vehicles.

Golden Sun (Wii U, $7.99): Marvel at your own awesome power while protecting the world as it crumbles around you. Wield mighty weapons and use your mind to bend reality with magical Psynergy in the premiere installment of this epic RPG series. To aid you on your quest, seek out the omnipotent creatures known as Djinn - but beware: You must defeat them to harness their power.

April 24
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 (Wii U, $7.99): Yoshi is back, baby, and he's ready to romp through a crayon-colored world where enemies are everywhere. Prepare to flutter jump and toss eggs to protect young Mario from the evil Magikoopa, Kamek. To save the day, Yoshi and his pals will have to morph into vehicles and even EAT their enemies to turn them into eggs. Umm ... yum?

I'll definitely get Advance Wars and Golden Sun when they come out. I'll get a few of the others too. I never had a GBA, so it's cool to be able to play some of these games.

All we will get are the exact same games as those released on the Wii. They never produce a big library and with licensing seemingly stick to the same games.

I don't need Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64. I already own the psychical carts and the Wii virtual console. Give me something a little less obvious. The Mario golf and tennis games maybe?

We never got GBA games released on Wii at least. Earthbound is probably the biggest game not available on Wii VC on Wii U VC.

kinda sad that they are still releasing one title per week if even that

not sure what the reason is that they can't just get everything up and running

too costly?

the fact that all of these releases are way overpriced for most gamers seems to indicate that maybe the process Nintendo uses to emulate these title might be costly

why not open a new studio who's tasked to solely work on VC

Really excited for GBA month in the EU. I'll likely nab a number of these. Most of all excited for Golden Sun, never really got the chance to play it proper before. Might get Kirby, Advance Wars and Yoshi's Island

It's really hard to get excited about VC releases on the Wii U that were already on the Wii. They really read like 'afterthoughts' or mere 'updates' to me, instead of being momentous at all. We need more 'Earthbound' moments to get excited again - and I say this as someone who didn't even get Earthbound - though I'm sure I will eventually.

Fairly old post, but I totally agree.

The way EarthBound was handled - full-blown trailer, free release of the scanned NP guide, actual fanfare all-around - should be the standard for headline first-party VC games.

No worries. I'm sure when Nintendo delivers Mother 3, it will have all that fanfare and more.
