Wii U Virtual Console - News and Releases

Australia, so the PAL region might actually get the real Contra and not Super Probotector? Very nice, though I guess some people won't be happy about this.

60Hz vs Robots. It's a tough call because I hate the human characters in the Contra games. Robots are WAY WAY WAY cooler and look awesome as opposed to dudebro 101 rambos.

North America will be getting Super Mario Bros. on 9/19.

Huh. You'd think they'd hype Wind Waker HD's release with A Link To The Past.
But maybe they're saving that one before its 3DS sequel's release ... along with a VC account system update between both consoles? A man can dream.

I created a separate thread for this, but thought it made sense to also post this here:

I thought this deserved its own thread as many people, including myself, were complaining about this in the Wii U VC Releases thread. Apparently, Nintendo added some kind of filter to NES games on Wii U's VC service that makes the games blurry. I found this solution out while playing around with some settings and remembering a trick I used to make some WiiWare games look less blurry on Wii (i.e. Megaman 9, Contra Rebirth, Castlevania: Adventure Rebirth, etc.).

So here is what you do:

1) Enter "System Settings" on Wii u (wrench icon)
2) Enter "TV" sub menu (TV with wrench icon)
2) Change the "TV Resolution" to 480p
3) Change the "Aspect Ratio" to 4:3
4) Change the Aspect Ratio of your actual TV to 4:3

That's it. Enjoy your crispy NES games on Wii U's VC. Even the whites seem a little more white, but that could just be the added sharpness. Just remember to change everything back when playing a regular Wii U title.

I hope this solution works for those who shared my frustration with this.

Will this reduce the lag for some games (e.g. Punch-Out!)

It's built into the Gamepad streaming. In a game that demands instant response it's noticeable.

It's not there in the Mega Man games where it would be even more game breaking. This is the first time I'm noticing it in off-TV play for any Wii U VC title. No input lag has been the main reason why off-TV VC has been so amazing.. I hope this is a 50/60hz optimization glitch they can fix.

Anybody having issues with VC games not showing up at the discounted rate? I've transferred my Wii vc games to my WiiU a long time ago but for some reason Adventure of Link doesn't show the discount.

Everything else did just fine, but this shows full price. Tried to buy it thinking the system would fix it at checkout but no dice. Thoughts?

I just want A Link to the Past before A Link Between Worlds comes out. I haven't played A Link to the Past in a very long time and would like to play it on the Game Pad instead of switching over to Wii Mode to buy it.

That's not how their process works. They don't have a "mass emulator" that needs a certain upgrade before there's a flood of games. You'd be right not to listen to your inner optimist there.

Well, the idea would be they develop that tech. It wouldn't be a "mass emulator" but a way to work more quickly and release things a lot sooner. Obviously they don't currently work like that and I don't know how they'd optimize their process, but it would be nice if it happened.

As I suggested in my post, I don't expect it to ACTUALLY happy... but it would be nice.

I was sure they were going to release ALttP before ALBW is released but I guess not :/. Weird.

That's Schwarzenegger and Stallone you're badmouthing there, man.

Also the notion of dudebro didn't really exist when Contra was conceived. Muscles weren't something every testosterone-fuelled angry young male wanted back then.

Now that I think about it...

You CAN still buy Wii VC games, right? I haven't been over in the old shop since Wii U came along.

Yes, of course. Why wouldn't you?

The word maybe didn't. But my dislike for that stuff was already firmly in place :)

does credit on the wii VC shop expire? And if not, are all the games on the Wii U VC also on the Wii? I'd like to use up the credit I have on the wii and then repurchase them on the Wii U where I will actually play them.

It does not.

Every Virtual Console game offered on the Wii U Nintendo eShop is available for purchase on the Wii Shop Channel, except for EarthBound.

It doesn't expire, yet. The Wii U only has a small fraction of the Wii's VC library natively but it will play all Wii VC games. The Wii VC has everything Wii U VC offers sans Earthbound.

And no 60Hz games in PAL-regions other than the obvious import releases.

It was in the original VC lineup trailer, so it'll come, but no date yet. I guess it'll be pretty soon since we're right between two new Zelda releases and the NES Zeldas have now been released.
If they focus on the new Zelda games they might mention it during the Direct tomorrow.

Final Fight 3 will be mine. I haven't played a Final Fight game since the Mega CD version of the original, and it's been one of the games I still miss after I sold the CD unit.

not sure if this is the right place to ask, but are you able to play wii virtual console games on the gamepad? I know you have to upgrade (1.50?) to do it, but i was wondering are all games able to be transferred over are able to play on the gamepad.

No. Everything you transfer, you can only play in "Wii Mode", which is basically the same as playing on the Wii. You have to upgrade to the WiiU version of VC games to play them on the GamePad.

Edit: Haha, spoke a few hours too soon. New System Update adds the function to play Wii games on the GamePad..
