Wii U Virtual Console - News and Releases

Indeed, the only reason for them doing that is because most people these days would simply give up an hour into most NES games, and so this gives them a chance to beat them without actually having to put out much effort. And, by doing that, cheapens beating any game on the VC, and completely removes the possibility of any real score challenges between people.

Hm...I think Nintendo should try to address this because legitimate score challenges in basically every old game would be great, but I'm not sure of a good way.

Maybe choosing competitive or casual on some sort of pre-game menu, and having the version show up on Miiverse screenshots somehow? It would be bothersome to those who don't care though, so maybe only do that on first play and hide it in the home menu or something. I dunno.

This made me laugh pretty damn hard, so I thank you for that.

I just got a Wii U the other day and for some reason figured the VC would be the greatest thing ever. Turns out I already own all the most well regarded games (Earthbound, SMW, Super Castlevania IV) and am just flat out not interested in the rest.

Definitely looking forward to Super Mario World 3 though.

Wii VC is pretty great and still accessible on Wii U if you're interested.

This week

Super Castlevania IV (Konami, SNES VC) - €7.99/£5.49
A century of Transylvanian tranquillity has ended. Count Dracula has returned, and this time he has a tombstone with your name on it, Simon Belmont! Explore the castle and its gruesome grounds, using your whip like a grappling hook to swing past traps; and arm yourself with weapons like axes, holy water and more, to send Dracula's minions back to the grave! This is the US version of the game.

Super Castlevania IV, yes.
60 Hz, ohhh yes.

Hmm any advice as to how I would play Wii VC on my Wii U? I don't own a Wii by the way

Switch to Wii mode and buy them in the Wii shop, then play them in Wii mode. Just remember that you need a Wii controller to play them (or Classic Controller depending on what kind of VC game you want to play), you can't use the WiiU GamePad or the WiiU Pro Controller.

I'll fess up, I have no idea what hz is and I've seen a lot of posts about Super Metroid being this many hz and this or that being this many hz... what is it and how does it affect the game? Is it related to refresh rates or frame rates or something?

Japan will be getting Clock Tower and Donkey Kong on 11/6.

...Clock Tower? Is there another game called Clock Tower aside from the PS1 horror game?

Quick history here...the original Clock Tower was for SNES. A port, called Clock Tower First Fear was released on Japanese PSone a few years later. When the series came to US/EU, they started with Clock Tower 2, now renamed Clock Tower. Clock Tower 2: Struggle Within was actually a Japanese spin off called Ghosthead...

Kind of a final fantasy situation there

This game didn't get a release on Wii VC before right?

Already own Wii Virtual Console titles?

Transfer and play... Wii owners who have already downloaded a title can transfer them to their Wii U consoles and play them in Wii Mode at no charge.

Or update at a discount... If you'd prefer to take advantage of the improved Wii U features, simply transfer your game to the Wii U, then purchase the updated title from the Wii U eShop at a special discounted price.

I see, that's pretty cool. Did it come out in English?

Ahh yes, I forgot. Actually skipped VC on Wii, so I don't get to take advantage of those deals.

Yeah, I completely skipped on Wii VC as well. It was worthless to me, when it didn't offer anything that I could do with the games that I already owned/could buy for their original systems (well, aside from Neo Geo games, where it was a big savings over buying the original).

With the WiiU though, I'm really enjoying it, since it allows me to play games in handheld form on the gamepad.

Love me some Castlevania, but for the love of god, give me Secret of Mana or Evermore (preferably Evermore because it's a better game #realtalk).

I don't agree, but I will say that Evermore is a lot better than people give it credit for. The saltiness over not getting SD3 really biased people on the game.

Not to mention that silly rumor that SoE is the reason we never got SD3 has long since been disproven, so it's not like that bitterness has any reason to still exist.

Lack of VC news for Europe is odd. Maybe they will announce a surprise VC game on Thursday like they did with release of Earthbound?
yeah right.

Perhaps we are finally getting Soul Blazer! Believe!

I want to think it's finally ALTTP. :P

Very odd regardless.

Tweets like that don't insult everybody. They insult people who take their hobby too seriously, and that includes you. If you stop acting insulted at every turn you will find that your hobby won't actually get any worse, but you will feel better for it.

In fact, listening to public opinion could be bad for gaming. The evidence is the boring homoginisation of gameplay styles over the last few years, which can be attributed to focus groups/ online feedback etc.
The fact is the gaming press do listen to online feedback. They just don't pander to it directly, which is wise.

Wrong thread?

What's intetesting is that we're getting Wario's Woods on both 3DS and WiiU on the same week. That's a first.

Unified eShop coming soon?

That would be one of the best possible things they could do. It makes sense after they merged the handheld and console branches of Nintendo earlier this year.

After the Virtual Console comment by Iwata the other day, I'm expecting a Nintendo Direct regarding this. They need to really ramp this up to help fill in gaps between Wii U releases next year.

Yeah, I do believe this would be the very first week in which a VC game is released on both platforms simultaneously. Kind of interesting.

It would be great if this happened more often. Heck, maybe the same will happen with SMB3 considering both versions were announced at the same time.
