Will Germany ever live down Hitler?

Whiskey and Dynamite are not everything.

They also invented the TV. That was kind off a big deal.

Anyway the whole Phoney war thing. That was largely the fault of the French. They fully expected the germans to attack very early in the war and so decided to sit back and wait in their defenses. Ze germans meanwhile realised that if they went on the attack early then there would be a good chance of defeat. If the french had decided to be bold and attack then things could have been very different. They had a huge army and were equipped very well. French high command was horribly organised and consisted of old duffers who thought that this war would be like world war one. Very few of them had the stomach for another war.
The british meanwhile knew that they were badly prepared. They didn't have enough planes or tanks. They had a powerful navy of course and they thought they could cut off german supplies of raw materials. Britain needed time.
Basically the germans were too busy doing things and building up their army. The french command was too timid. The british were too busy getting organised.
It was revealed in "The world at war" that had the allies attacked the germans then the germans could only have held their defensive positions for about two weeks. They were outnumbered five to one.

On paper. They declared war and then did absolutely nothing. Hence the name Phoney War.

French military was based on the wall, and never in a fucking million years was the BEF capable of launching a prolonged ground offensive on the continent, let alone against germany. The entire concept is anathema to british foreign policy since the napoleonic wars.

So no poland, fuck off.

Yes it will live down Hitler. Like America lived down Bush. Or like China lived down their student massacre. Or like Turkey lived down the Armenian genocide. After some time people don't give a shit and people of our time don't even give a shit when horrible stuff IS happening.

I wouldn't exactly put Bush on the same level of Hitler lol.

lmao. I feel bad, but until the scolding in this thread I thought pizza was invented in America.

The Bush Dynasty isn't Hitler level but they are monsters. Bush I's CIA career, Iraq 1, slaughter in Panama etc... Bush 2's wars. We have no options in the US, our leaders are villainous. Pretty much under the thumb of global gangsters. HW >>>>> Capone.

Saying that America invented Pizza is like saying the iranians invented KFC, or Scotland invented sushi.

It's just insane. Pizza is, along with pasta, the national dish of Italy! How could anyone not be aware of that?

United States president >>>>> than a local crime boss??? No way

In September Germans had about 60 divisions in Poland and 43-49 in the West. They occupy narrow front in bunkers of Siegfried Line in mountainous Saar or behind Rhine.

Now note that at this time British Army in France is non existent and the French Army is only at the beginning of mobilisation. On 17 September French had about 60 divisions. Given the terrain, density lack of any stocks of supplies and inexperience of french forces that ratio was hardly sufficient to achieve any major successes. By the end of September the Germans are bringing fresh troops to the West.

As to the OP, a joke in a satirical program does not imply an "intrinsic connection" with Hitler. Few people make that connection and most moved past it. As a joke or a dig at the Germans it will always be there, just like American digs at British or British/French bickering that one could trace back to 1066.

Watch the world at war. The British and french forces had 110 divisions against just 23 divisions along the line.

"General Siegfried Westphal stated ("World at War" - France Falls - Thames TV), that if the French had attacked in force in September 1939 the German army "could only have held out for one or two weeks"."

"At the Nuremberg Trials, Alfred Jodl said that "if we did not collapse already in the year 1939 that was due only to the fact that during the Polish campaign, the approximately 110 French and British divisions in the West were held completely inactive against the 23 German divisions."[6]"

Next year is going to be interesting in Germany. 100 year since the start of WWI, 75 years since the start of WWII and 25 years since the fall of the Berlin wall.

-World at War is a 40 year old popular documentary. As such it doesn't have access to newer research. I suspect that even at the time of making it their research wasn't particularly deep.

-Germans spouted a lot of crap about war. Given that Jodl had no access to French OoB his statement on their forces is worthless. Given that what he said about German forces is at odds with documentary evidence makes him either: a liar/ a moron. You pick one.

-In 1939 Westphal was a lowly staff officer in an Infantry Division and as such had no clue about capabilities of forces deployed therein.

Look at German situation map for 25 September and count the divisions.

Germans themselves keep reminding themselves every single day.

Their tv channels pretty much show WWII and Hitler documentaries 24/7.

edit:

Just checked the TV guide, tonight alone:

a Rommel documentary on the country's biggest channel (ARD)
a Stalingrad documentary on another big channel (n-tv)
a documentary about "Hitler's human trafficking" (Phoenix)
a documentary about "Jews in the DDR" (Phoenix)
a Das Boot parody (U-900) (VOX)

This is perfect for this thread on the anniversary of Kristallnacht.

Banner at FC Bayern (Munich) match today, translation: “75 years following the November pogroms nothing and no-one is forgotten”

Amazing fans.

America is more interested in associating Germany with the Nazis than the Communists who came in between those two time periods. They'd rather focus on Capitalist (murdering) Germany than Communist (starving) Germany.

Hitler and the nazis were so bad that people forget that Germany was also the "bad guys" 25 years earlier in the first world war.

No country who was involved in that conflict could or should be called the "good" guys and them the "bad".

WW1 was the culmination of rising tensions between all the then superpowers which exploded when a single bullet was fired.

As for the OP. eventualy yes .

The world lived down many tyrants and despots and people who commited mass genocide that eventualy became just part of human history. Hitler will be no different .regardless of how big his impact on the world may have been .

Live down and be forgotten are different things. Of course Hitler will be lived down, but it's pretty hard to forget a dude like that.
