Will the 3080 become obsolete by the time supply becomes widespread?

"Obsolete"? Fuck no. The most popular GPU with Steam users right now is a 1060.

Look at the bright side, its 10 GB of VRAM is going to become a bottleneck as soon as next gen games designed around the 13.5 gb of vram of next gen consoles come out.
It doesnt work like that. The consoles dont have seperate system ram like PC. There wont be a game this gen that uses 13.5gb of vram, there will be hardly any games that use 10gb of vram on PC.

"Will the most advanced video card on the market become obsolete in a few months?" Lol, are you for real, mate? This card will easily last this whole gen and half of the next one. What the hell is wrong with people...

One of the possible reasons not to go beyond 10GB is XSeX's 10GB + 6GB take (10GB faster than rest).
That being said, how much of RAM do you think is needed for code?

3080 will be fine for many years. Especially so since AMD is AMD and DLSS (and similar tech) will dominate anything (deal with it).

That's why I bought a 3090 xD

I think Nvidia knew what they were doing with the 10gb vram thing. I'm sure they chose thta once they knew about the consoles having 'only' 16gb of ram.
As for system ram, well all the PC versions of 'next gen' games so far have been using the same 4-10gb of system ram games were in the last 2 or 3 years of last gen. So i think the most vram used in games from current gen will be around 8gb.

Obsolete is in the eye of the beholder. There are plenty of people that are like, "A 780ti is still totally fine for today's gaming. It runs most games at 480p and 25fps, but it's more than adequate."

The difference is that 780ti is no longer in production and nobody has it in their minimal, let alone recommended, specs. 780ti is a relic. 3080 will be in production for many years and will not disappear from recommended specs for a loooooong time.

It will be done for by the time the 3080ti is out . Since most probably it will replace the 3080.
The good thing the price will be probably be the same. The bad news is you won't be able to mine with the ti

Which trades blows with a 970, so maybe I shouldn't be TOO mad I'm stuck on a 970. But my shiny new 10600kf is sure angry at me.

Huh?

If better cards come out they'll drop the price, or those cards will be more expensive. Also you'll see 3080s on the used market at a discount.

These cards are sold at a price point based on relative performance.

And not like any new cards would have tons of stock either lol

Why would it be obsolete when a 3080TI comes out that will be in margin of error more performant, around 5%, with probably 1000 $ price point ? The 10 gig 3080 will continue to be the sweetspot of price/performance until 4080 comes out, provided it has a proper jump in performance and a good price

Even RTX 2XXX series have second life with DLSS, so no not really. If you buy yourself something like AMD 6XXX series on the other, you are buying old card now.
Not really. 6000 series should be good for a while. Their vram is also more forward thinking.

its always been the case. 2080 after the 2080 super. it will go EOL as soon as 3080ti hits. same goes for 3070ti. the performance difference won't be big. probably in single-digit % increase. with more VRAM.

till the 4000 series hits.

multiple trusted insiders said this even. and Nvidia wants to kill mining on the Geforce card. I am assuming the 3080ti will come very soon even.

as for the 3080, it might go both ways. higher in price because of its mining power compared to the 3080ti. or gamers won't care about it since they can technically get 3080ti for the same price with more performance.

But 100% the card will EOL soon. the 3080ti will be more like mid-gen refresh before the 4000 series are out.

nothing is forward thinking about an ATI card lol.
kidding. they have extra ram yes. but their cards are not stable at all sadly. from stuttering to freezing to black screen. their memory buffer is small compared to nvidia and so is their ray tracing is a joke.

ray tracing on AMD card is useless. You will need DLSS to get ray tracing at acceptable frames. and a new of cards will come in probably Sept and we still don't have their ^^solution^^ to DLSS.

Development on what's next most likely began even before 3000 series launched.

But I think 3080 still be adequate for anything coming out in the next couple of years.

With 3060 and its 12GB VRAM, seriously? :)

10GB on 3080 is such an apparent "tier drop" it hurts.
It was supposed to be overpriced Ti card with 20GB.

3070 would use 16GB and be "3080".

Obsolete compared to what? Card is still far better than both next gen consoles and will probably last you a long time.

They're fine if you don't care about RT.

The question is why wouldn't you ? At this point when you are paying for a specific price range . Why get less ?
If i am paying 800$ or 900$. Why would I get a card without a proper ray tracing or dlss ?

here is the truth. If you have a 2080ti stick to it . It will hold fine till 3080ti.
Because 10gig is barely enough . And the 16gig version is missing allot. The 3090 is stupid expensive not worth it.

so what is the best option ? 3080ti / 3070ti range of cards

also I am playing at 2k 144 frames . The 2080ti is handling everything fine . With dlss for example I am getting locked 144 frames in Cold War.
I am getting above 60 frames with dlss and ultra ray tracing at 2k in cyber punk .

try to play that game on amd with ray tracing at 2k ? Yeah...

I do wonder if the Covid situation and related manufacturing issues will delay the 40xx series. I can see the gap between the 30xx and 40xx series being 3 years now instead of the typical 2.

2k? You mean 4k? 4k 144hz? Nice.

Reason you would is because that's all thats available. Their cards are still fine, and most games will be made for RDNA 2 for the next 5 or so years.

By the end of the year, basically like every other GPU since 3d acceleration was a thing

That's not what he means.

But to answer your question op, I believe Nvidia is going to milk this generation for all it's worth, before releasing RTX 4000 series stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get that line of cards until late 2023 or early 2024. I wouldn't be surprised if 'Super' variants of the RTX 3000 series comes out next year though. And maybe that is the tactic Nvidia is using, to prolong generations, is coming out with mid-cycle stuff, kind of like with consoles last gen (with the X1X and PS4 Pro)

The 3080 will last you through this entire console generation as long as maxing out games at 4K is not a requirement for you.

I never say to wait but now really is time to wait... Or get a ps5.
I got 3080fe for 700 from nvidia but now it's like 2k

I just want a 3080 or it's equivalent sometime in the next 2 years, and even then I'm not sure I'll be able to get a fair price.

Nobody is releasing any super cards. If anything, the fact that AMD finally offers some semblance of competition, if barelly, will accelerate things.

I can't buy many of the games I want because I don't want to experience them on my 1080. Wish I could just buy a $3080 somewhere close to MSRP but nope. It's really killing my interest in gaming but maybe that's a good thing.

They are killing me with these anemic VRAM numbers. Still doing 8gb on some card. 3080 has 10gb but 3090 has 24? Can we get a 12 or 16 GDDR6X card in there somewhere? They know it would be the perfect fit. Just drop the 3080ti already, or maybe a 3070ti with 12-16gb GDDR6. Please and thank you.

Development already started the moment the 3000 series was done.

It all depends on what AMD has in the cooker tho. if they got another GPU lined up with drastical improvement u can bet nvidia will release a new gpu before it.
Lovelace and Hopper have been in development for a while now.

I'm gonna be transferring my 1070 to my new build, and even that has 8gb (albeit GDDR5). The regular 3080 should've been 16, but I'm hoping there will be something available in the near future.

I like to mine bitcoin when I'm not gaming. Looking at the stats, I can see why miners want the 3xxx series cards so badly. They perform so good at mining.

All I have is a 1060 6gb. Has served me well. But man do I wish I could get my hands on a damn RTX card.

I am currently using that. Bought it used and cheap from my brother who know uses 2070 . Funny thing is he wanted to upgrade again to 3xxx series yet 95% he plays Dota2. Such a waste.
