Will the PlayStation 2 remain the finest looking console?

+1 For Dreamcast.

Though, the Gamecube is a very very close second for me.

Ugliest award goes to The Xbox, with the SNES redesign coming in a very close second.

Black does not go well together with blue so no, it isn't the most stylish. And it takes too much space. PSTwo is a lot sexier!

The sexiest looking console for me would have to be the PStwo, followed by the NES, Dreamcast and the Panasonic FZ-10 3DO.

I think the Gamecube is sort of charming in a weird way.

The thread is doing fine now I would say.

Anyway, I see people saying the PS2 can't compare to other consoles but then pull up this bad counter-examples. *shakes head* :D

I agree that the PS2 is the finest looking console design established from launch ---- the PStwo bests it, but its years late.

The Cube is an extremely close 2nd to the origional PS2, and had it been in more trendy colors would've done more convincing.

the Dreamcast will always be one of the nicer looking consoles, but still has a few useless nobs/greebles that serve no function and suck that "fineness" away still making it seem like a toy.

Best looking console of all time! Kind of funny that the north american version is one of the worst looking of all time. Whoever handled the NA launch of the system should be dragged out into the street and shot.

Hell yeah! I mean it's got a handle!!!

I ummm I know...I used that handle...once? maybe...
I'm not talking about the handle. I mean that it's a fairly clean design that almost matches it name. It's sort of cute. It should have had square controller ports though, it would have made the Cube look more clean.

Revolution is my favorite design of modern consoles (especially the black Revolution).

I don't understand why. It simply looks like an internal PC CD-ROM drive with a push feed instead of a tray. Seriously.

Because it's simple, small, and sleek.

I don't know where the Dreamcast love is coming from. I think it's pretty boring looking personally. Love the games on it, but not the look so much.

I think the PS2 is pretty damn cool looking. I still like having the old unit as well. I also like the slim redesign a lot. I guess I sort of love a lot of gaming hardware, and each one has it's own charming aspects. I love the Gamecube for what it is. I also love the 360 hardware, and the controller only help solidify the whole package.

I agree, yet I still think it looks better than PS3 and Xbox360. They're just so bulky and full of useless carves, bumps, buttons and other stuff.

2600 > *

Sure, wood veneer doesn't look as sexy as it used to.. but hot damn, there was nothing like going to someone's house and seeing this gorgeous thing lying on the floor next to a Yar's Revenge cart.

btw, I think the PS2 stole the ridges idea from it.

And the 2600 stole it from an amp.

I think the original Sega Genesis was one of the best-looking designs ever. I don't know why, but it reminded me of something straight out of Robotech. Fairly sleek in a late-'80s kind of way, good use of colors (black with red and silver accents), a solid feel to the switches, and the headphone jack with built-in volume control topped it all off. Cool logo, too.

I think the Revolution is the exact opposite, design wise, of the N64, which I think was probably the best example of everything that is wrong with a lot of game console design. A game console should have a look that doesn't make you embarassed to have it sitting next to your television.

I'm an Apple fan, partially because my sense of design fits in with theirs. Everybody says Apple is about design, and they are, but what they miss is that Apple design is about the focus on creating hardware that comes second to what the hardware DOES, not the look of the hardware itself. When Apple thinks about the look of a computer's design, they think, "how can we design this so that it seems less like a computer and more like a device to lets you do things," versus a lot of PC companies that think, "how can we make our computer look bad-ass, with lights and grills and all that!"

I think game consoles should take the same approach. It shouldn't be about trying to make the console look good, it should be about the console looking good. There's a difference there. Giving a game console corners and round bits and a grill and an extra here and there does nothing but make the console look ridiculous. Too many companies think that "design" means either making something plain and boring, or getting wacky with their design and creating some that's gaudy. Apple gets it, and I'm glad to see that Nintendo finally gets it as well with the DSLite and Revolution.

As far as your comment, no, it doesn't look like an internal CD-ROM drive, and that's a big point. Minimalist design is very tricky, and I think they pulled it off well. It's all in the details - if you want to say that the Rev just looks like a CD-ROM drive, and ignore those details, then we can just say that most cars look the same and call it a day.

I always thought the PS2 looked like an ugly retro video recorder, although it looks ten times better vertical + stand. N64 still gets my vote as best looking console.

So puuurty

Whoever thought that green and white go well together needs to be shot. Replace the green with either Red, Blue or a golden yellow and you'd have a pretty console. Green only goes nicely with brown and black.

I just hope they release a black controler too.

It's lumpy. It looks like three different teams each designed a part of it, and then they just stuck it all together.

Ummm . . . no.

And this Michigan State cheerleader is willing to go that extra mile to convince you that you are incorrect!
