Will there ever be a parody as good as Spaceballs again?

Spaceballs is not even the best Mel Brooks parody movie. In fact, compared to something like Yong Frankenstein is is a pretty terrible movie.

WTF is Galaxy Quest?
Its a broad parody of Star Trek. A bunch of actors from a cheesy sci-fi show are mistaken for the real thing and pulled into space by aliens. It has a god tier cast for this sort of thing (Alan Rickman, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell, Tim Allen, Sigourney fucking Weaver) and it is excellent

if you get Futurama you'll get Galaxy Quest

This is a pretty good way of putting it.

It's very much aimed more at people who are familiar with the Original Series, but the concepts are broad enough that I think you should be able to roll with it on its own. It doesn't necessitate that you be able to quote Trek episodes chapter & verse, but if you're familiar enough with the concepts of Star Trek, it should still work.

"Nice car dick head!"

"Faaauck youuu. KFBR392, KFBR392, KFBR392, KFBR392."

KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392. KFBR392.

Spaceballs is not only the most quotable film I've ever seen, but Mel also basically predicts how far merchandising would go in the years to follow.

(Every time I watch it I also hope that Rick Moranis would try to unretire.)

Wet Hot American Summer.

I don't really consider Wet Hot American Summer a parody. it's more like a documentary on being a staff member at a Jewish summer camp. foreal though.

I fucking love that movie though. the generic pottery breaking noise used everywhere in that movie is one of the best gags in any comedy ever.

Me and some buddies have been combining the internet but so far.

I watched Austin Powers maybe a month or two ago for the first time in ages and couldn't believe how well it held up. Still unbelievably funny, probably my #1 parody except for maybe Spinal Tap if that counts.

Would I enjoy it if the only Star Trek I've experience are the Abrams films?

I did, so yeah sure.

I would say Spinal Tap qualifies more as a parody than Austin Powers. Well I guess Austin Powers parodies 007 to a certain extent.

I think Spinal Tap absolutely counts.

So far as the OP goes - Spaceballs might not even make a top 15 parody films between 1987-2014, and if we expand that list to all-time?

Spaceballs just isn't that good.

I like Spaceballs but as a parody it has nothing on the classics like Top Secret, Airplane, Naked Gun or even Hot Shots!

I might even go so far as to say that Family Guy Star Wars movie is a better parody of Star Wars than Spaceballs.

I don't know if I really wanna go that far, though.

This

Is probably my favourite scene from the movie. I just love how Dark Helmet becomes completely clueless when when is and how soon then will be.

Still waiting for those flamethrowers tho.

I see Scary Movie being mentioned but isn't Scream movies parody movies themselves and at the same much better movies as well.

Also, knights who say 'Ni' are dissapointed in not being mentioned yet :)

Scream movies are meta or self-aware, but I wouldn't call them parodies.

right, while Scream is a parody Scary Movie is a spoof

you got it though right? you just didn't like it

Yeah I got it and I even liked a handful of moments (Pulling the ship out of dock for the first time.... Tony Shalhoub, and the way the main alien talked), but I didn't find it particularly funny overall, nor did I care for the characters/story.

I find the lack of Top Secret! mentions in this thread...disturbing

Not as good as Airplane, but very watchable, and some decent lines (among many groaners)

Nick Rivers: Is this the potato farm?
Resistance Member: Yes, I'm Albert Potato.

Anyway, I also find the lack of Kentucky Fried Movie mentions even more disheartening:

"You need total concentration"

Yeah, Top Secret wasn't as on the mark as their other stuff but still had some great scenes.

The moving platform one was genius.

As for Spaceballs, it was always pretty shit.

This thread reminded me of that movie UHF, with Weird Al Yankovic. I think I thought it was funny.
It was a long time ago,but I remember those commercials it had, like Gandhi 2 and Conan the librarian.
Need to see it again and see if it's any good.

Austin Powers wins. It's great because it succeeds at not being overly silly and leaning so heavily on what it's parodying. It stands alone as it's own film.

Unlike Spaceballs and all of the other JUNK in this thread.

WHO MADE THAT MAN A GUNNER?

I did sir. He's my cousin.

Who is that man?

He's an asshole sir.

I know that, what's his name?

And his cousin?

He's an asshole too sir. Gunner's mate First Class Philip Asshole!

How many assholes we got on this ship??

Almost everybody on screen: Yo!

I knew it, I'm surrounded by assholes... keep firing, assholes!

I love it. Spaceballs next to other great parody comedy's are my favorite. Like Hot Fuzz,Shaun of the Dead,Galaxy Quest,Robin Hood Men in Tights.

As parodies of genre, there's been some good ones on TV of late. Check out The Wrong Mans (A parody of man-getting-swept-up-in-chaos thrillers) for a pretty straight take on a parody, or A Touch Of Cloth (Parodying detective drama series) for an extremely silly Airplane-like affair.
