Will we ever see another Yoshi Story? (Was it really a failure?)

I have a Yoshi's Story shirt somewhere. Came with the game. I used to wear it all the time.

But yeah the game was pretty over the top in cuteness. I remember having decent fun. It was pretty short though, right?

Yoshi's Story was really cool, Nintendo has so many ideas that just go into the trash bin. If I were them I would be more active in getting some hungry devs to develop these games.

Why isn't this thread about Yoshi's Island?

Because they've made another Yoshi's Island, they haven't made another Yoshi's Story.

I wonder if I still have my save with getting all the melons... After watching some videos I still like it as much as I did back then.

Yoshi's Story, Luigi's Mansion, seems Hideki Konno has a pretty shitty track record for non-Mario Kart games.

I can't believe some people didn't know there was a Yoshi Island 2 for the DS. And again, just in case, the Yoshi Island 1 GBA port released as Super Mario Advance 3 has 6 new levels and a new (and short) ending.

And here's the Yoshi Story (spiritual) sequel everyone wants:

I didn't play Luigi's Mansion for years (I think I was bitter about it being a surrogate Mario game at launch), but when I did I was pleasantly surprised. It's a bit short and easy, but thematically I think it's genius.

As for Yoshi's Story, it has (mostly) great art direction marred by dumbed down level design. It's a shame the structure of the game is so bland, because some of the levels have pretty cool visuals.

Luigi's Mansion was brilliant you heathen.

He wasn't THE director on that, though.
Well, he wasn't the director of Yoshi's Story, either.
He was the designer, which actually makes things worse. :p

This... The only gripe I had with the game was its shortness and it's low dfficulty.

But getting all melons in levels can be really, really challenging, and makes you see the game completely differently.

If I remember right, this objective wasn't even in the Japanese version. They just shoehorned it into the US version to add something to shoot for. Or maybe it was something you could do, but got no recognition for. I can't find it on TMK or the Mario Wiki.

Yeah, you're right. He co-directed Yoshi's Island with a few other directors. They need to bring them all together for another Yoshi's Island. :D

I didn't play Yoshi's Story 'till a few years back, but I enjoyed it. Seemed obvious to me that the game wasn't created with hardcore-gamers in mind, but instead little kids. Mostly in how you could breeze through the game for a bedtime story. It had a certain sense of peace to it, just walking about eating fruits and getting introduced to some of the most basic game mechanics.

Though, give me Yoshi's Island any day. Still such a timeless experience.

I played it for the first time a few months ago and it's one of the worst (internally developed) Nintendo games.

At first I didn't get it, you could eat 30 fruits pretty easily and breeze through the levels. Then I read the manual and I got the point was getting the hearts and melons. I got the 3 hearts in each level and anywhere from 20-30 melons. A lot of melons are tied to almost impossible mini-games and if you fail them it's all over again. After completing all the levels I'd have to say it was a barely decent game, as the level design is pretty boring. Bosses were a joke and the controls really sloppy, which could have been alleviated with d-pad movement.

The only comparison I can see with Epic Yarn is the visual style, but Kirby is 20 times better, and Yoshi's Story is much harder if you play it "properly".

The OST for this is total torture, it's most diabolical thing ever issued on CD
I actually have that Love, Peace & Happiness CD. I used to put Yo-Yo-Yoshi on repeat over college campus speakers and leave it on when not supervised. Kids got so angry and fed up with it, they started throwing rocks at the speakers around the school. I had to stop doing it when I was informed I would be responsible to cover the costs of any broken speaker if I continued this act of terrorism.

I consider it one of the crowning moments in my life.

This game was badly underrated and overlook. I don't know what happened, but I remember for some reason the media shit on it back when it was released. I think it had to do with them rating the developer (Artoon) instead of rating the game.

Oh, and Luigi's Mansion was awesome. People shit on it because it doesn't play like a traditional Mario platformer - something they expect from a Nintendo hardware launch.

This is the reason why I had to use Gamestop's return within 7 days no matter what return policy back when I bought it. That and how I cleared the whole game within that time period, with no other challenge to look to. I was so disappointed.

I distinctly remember renting this game when it first came out. I got home, I just wanted to check it out for a few minutes, maybe play a couple of levels, but ended up easily beating it on my first play through. I was expecting a much longer (and tougher) game like Yoshi Island...

Yoshi Touch and Go is probably my favorite Yoshi game that isn't Yoshi Island. I loved the arcade style gameplay.

Yoshi's Story is still the single greatest disappointment I have ever had with a video game. I bought it on the first day, and returned it a couple of hours later after I beat it. I was just so let down at the lack of any sort of challenge or character. It was such a huge step down from Yoshi's Story it was not even funny.

It got panned due to it being too easy and cute. And then Kirby's Epic Yarn released last year and got praised for the exact same reasons :lol
The difference is that nearly all the Kirby games have been high on cute and short on challenge. Kirby has always been fun, but has never been a really well regarded platformer, where Yoshi's Island is still considered to be near the top of the genre.

I loathe Yoshi's Island DS.

Switching babies is tedious as hell. It's Donkey Kong 64 syndrome, where you have to haul your ass back to the character switching station so you can pull the lever that only Donkey Kong can pull and then you go back and switch to Diddy because the lever opened a door with red bananas and a jet pack section and no.

The game is glitchy as hell. I tried to grab a swinging vine as DK and I ended flying straight up in the air (almost to the top of the level) for no reason. I landed and tried to grab the vine again, and the game froze.

There's absolutely no difficulty curve. Sometimes, some levels are bitch hard, and sometimes they're depressingly easy. I gave up playing the game shortly after beating the Antlion boss - the level itself made me want to snap my DS in half, and when I finally got to the boss, I found it only had one or two attacks that were pathetically easy to avoid.

The best parts of Yoshi's Island DS are the bits that are lifted from the original Yoshi's Island unchanged. Which, at that point, you'd be better off just playing Yoshi's Island.

Let's not exaggerate, it's not tedious at all (like DK64 is)

Never seen a glitch, and I 100%ed the game.

There is a difficulty curve, gets harder as the game progresses and the secret/extra levels are a bitch. Just like the original.

Fact is, most of the complaints are because it was made by Artoon. Otherwise it would be considered in the same level as the original, which would still get the nod deservedly, as it's the one that introduced the concept.

Why would we want a sequel to one of Nintendo's worst games?

After they released Yoshi's Island, the greatest 2D game ever made, they gave me my greatest moment of gaming disappointment by releasing that ugly spinoff prequel mess.

What we need is a sequel to Yoshi's Island. None was ever released, and no wikipedia links or images will convince me otherwise. A Miyamoto-led Yoshi's World would be amazing.
You are now my favorite poster on GAF.

Yoshi Story was awesome. Mom got it for my brother and I as a christmas present and it was one of my favorite games. White Yoshi was awesome!

No way... YI DS had none of the charm and none of the constant ideas topping each other like the original.

It was a YI title only in graphical design.

I'd love to see a return of the YI's style-gameplay, but it seems as if Nintendo actively goes out of its way to make people forget that game.

YS can go die in a fire.

Seems the 3DS would be the perfect system to bring the series back on.

Man, I don't know what I loved about Yoshi's Story when I was 10. I've since played it as an adult and abhor it. The controllers feel sloppy, the art is sub-par when compared to it's successor and the level design is too simple. I wish I had never purchased it off the Virtual Console service.

Actually he was the lead director iirc.

Yeah, you're right. He co-directed Yoshi's Island with a few other directors. They need to bring them all together for another Yoshi's Island.

Well, technically he was probably simply a map director like he was with SMB3 and SMW. It's a little confusing cause of the way Nintendo labels their credits.

That voice, the diabetes-inducing saccharine sweetness, the complete absence of anything even remotely resembling a "challenge"...
I dunno I remember some optional collectibles being kind of hard to get when I replayed it last year. I think all Melon runs were supposed to be difficult too, but I didn't aim for that. Not really set up well or often, but certainly there was some challenge if you went looking for it.

Every Yoshi game since then has been mediocre at best. Outside of NSMB Wii/Super Mario Galaxy 2 style "cameo" appearances, I'd honestly prefer it if Nintendo forgot Yoshi existed at this point.
Oh. Oh I see.
You're just spewing your usual bunk.

Sega1991 frequently complains games are "unplayable". I'm sure you'll find that not exaggerating is difficult for him.

Yoshi Universal Gravitation is similar aesthetically, though wholly different in gameplay.
I really wish this game was better. Theres neat mechanics like killing TapTaps by rolling up the ground they walk on, buts its packaged in dull missions like "Collect 40 coins!" or "Collect 5 eggs!"
Or the amazing "Collect 50 coins and 8 eggs!"

Lijik said:

Did you pay attention to any of my specific complaints? I did not finish Yoshi's Island DS. I have no intention of ever going back to it. That is the textbook definition of "unplayable".

I stopped right after the antlion boss because I was in shock: All of the trouble I had getting through the stage and now here's a boss who's only method of attack is "jump straight up out of a pit if the player gets too close to the edge."

So hey, as long as you stay away from the edge and angle your eggs so they ricochet in to the pit, the boss can't ever touch you and, as I recall, never even tries to attack. And that was, what? World 4? World 5?

I never felt like the game was getting harder because I was getting closer to the end. Even in the same world as the antlion boss, there were levels I could breeze through untouched. Other levels, I would practically get juggled between enemies, unable to get back to the baby before time ran out. No rhyme or reason. I wasn't playing a secret level. Just sometimes, a level would be extremely difficult and other times it wouldn't.

This is not hyperbole: There are not many games I have found to be that frustrating, that unbalanced, and that disappointing. The original Yoshi's Island set the watermark impossibly high and YIDS was pretty much the lowest lowball possible.

At least with Touch N' Go or Topsy Turvy I could say, "Well, those were spinoffs, and they were saddled with weird gimmicks, so they don't count."

Oh, you just threw down. Luigi's Mansion was awesome.

What did people think of Yoshi Touch & Go? I thought it was a neat little game.

I played Yoshi's Story as a kid and was very disappointed with it.

You didn't even have to finish a level to beat it. You could only play one level per world per playthrough. I also hated how you had to use the analog to move in a 2D game, especially because by that point, my N64 analog stick was much less sensitive than it used to be, so I pretty much had to mash the stick in one direction to get Yoshi to run.

It was a terrible followup to the great game that was Yoshi's Island.

Nowadays, if you make this kind of complaint, you get hounded about how you should've done more research, or it's your fault that you were expecting something like Yoshi's Island again...but I was a freaking kid! I didn't know any better! But I knew enough to know that the game wasn't very good.

...I thought the soundtrack was okay, though.

It seems many people find YS bad because of YI?
That's stupid they are different games, just because Yoshi stars in it doesn't make it a sequel.
