Ah. So once the update is installed it defaults the web browser to Edge.

It's small things like this that annoy me about Microsoft.

But then you click Firefox:

It's like one of those websites that pop up with a dialog box when you try and close the tab.

My default is still set to Firefox after the update.

Come across my first bug, twice now when waking my PC from sleep anytime I enter an app where typing is involved - Chrome, start menu a random key is just typed up indefinitely.

It's like the key is stuck down. Only thing I can do is restart the computer. Very weird. Anyone getting this?

This PC is only a few months old and had a fresh windows 10 install at the time, even after this update the default apps menu is still bugged for me, doesn't allow me to pick anything or save the changes.

I had the same issue on my old pc and never found a fix for it.

Loool it got worse from before? iirc mine was since fine after update. Best way I found to set defaults is to use "Set Defaults by app" and do it through control panel. Settings apps seems buggy in setting things a lot of the time.
I tried it and it works. Forza Apex works right after installing it.
Ha good to hear :)

I don't know if this is true,

Just change your wifi connection settings to "metered" and it won't download updates without asking you first, metered just won't download updates (without asking you first) but still download priority updates, as long as the anniversary update isn't classified as a priority update?

Can TechGAF confirm?

It didn't for me. ARe you in the US? Wondering if EU directives forced MS to not force changes like that for EU users, because my privacy settings were intact, it didn't change my default browser either. It did add Edge on the taskbar, but that's it.

I got the default apps change here in Canada as well for all 3 of my PCs updated. Also some of the privacy settings were toggled.

Two of my PCs say VPN is turned on in settings.. I can't find a source, is this nothing?

So there's literally no real reason to upgrade rn? Maybe even detrimental? I mean, I figured, cuz it's microsoft, but good to know.

Sounds so much worse than I expected from a seemingly modest update. Definitely holding off on changing from 7 now. (I deliberately didn't say "upgrading.")

If Windows Update is downloading updates I can't do squat online on that computer. How is that still happening. Old Windows might not have been perfect and W10 looks slick but the more I use it I honestly can't stand it for some reason. It's just annoying.

I hate how scummy they gotta be with the ads and the way they make the option they don't want you to choose unhighlighted.

Sometimes I feel like these updates don't do anything like defaulting apps or the like for me lol. All my settings are the same. Honestly, it could have auto updated and I wouldn't have noticed anything lol

Maybe its cause I did a clean install on the OS a few months ago?

Like I dont see any popups/new ads. The only major thing was OneDrive showing up in the task manager bar (but it was still deactivated) and the windows store icon on the taskbar.

I am genuinely scared of having this update on my gaming computer, which hasn't been turned on since late May, when I return home from work in a week. I don't want a lock screen, I don't want unwanted apps, and I definitely don't want ads and tracking. My gaming PC is more personal than my laptop which at least has Pro so I can defer until it's "fixed." Am I fucked unless I downgrade to W7, and how can I do that?

After fiddling a bit with the settings it's fine on my gaming PC. I wouldn't worry about it tbh. I have to look up this VPN setting though..

I started installing the update a few hours ago and when I came back, my computer is stuck on restarting. Just those spinning dots, not actually doing anything.

Help?

Edit: Fixed yaaaaaaay

Update, turn all those things off, remove apps with power shell (if you really need to save like 200MB...) and enjoy the faster OS?

So, under Storage Settings, it says my 60gb SSD has over 2TB of stuff on it. And a size called "EB" lol

You dun fucked up good, Microsoft

EDIT: Aw, it fixed itself. This update is a mess.

😀 Along with the fact all storage devices are seemly displayed in the taskbar now. Really don't understand this change like why do I need see internal devices I can't hotswap in the first place now!?!

I need to figure out how to put Windows back on my other SSD, the bigger one, like it was, before the update fried it. It seems to be okay now, but yeah...

I also seem to have W8.1 somewhere now, and I don't have any idea how to get rid of it when I boot.

Windows store was busted for me so I did a refresh which isn't a big deal, but it still wasn't working. Deleted the new folder that it generates with the WindowApps folder (can't remember the name atm on mobile) and then everything worked lol

Such a weird error but whatever it was a quick fix

I can't update Skype Preview or whatever it is, which I'm pretty sure it forced installed for me, and I can't get rid of it. I'll try that.

God I hate this type of adware tryhard shit in a paid OS. For fuck's sake Microsoft.

If Edge really is as amazing as people say, people will eventually switch. You don't have to beg and plead for people to switch when they are just changing a setting. Sounds like they haven't learned jack shit from their forced upgrade fiasco.

Yep i get this all the time. Its like the button or key used to wake the computer is then stuck in a loop. I am able to make it stop by clicking in the search box a then the desktop a few times but its annoying. Havent found a fix yet, i havent updated to the lastest version yet.

Same here, never got a popup but i just build this new desktop a couple of months ago.
Did a clean install and never really see the problems.

But then again with windows i already have a habit to just format my windows ssd and reinstall it every 6~8 months.

Wasn't this update menat to bring Windows and Xbox store together? Thought that would also imply that I can finally pre-order Forza Horizon 3 on windows but I guess not.

Update took about 30 minutes which is okay.

For some reason Forza Apex was installed before the update and still runs after the update, but I cannot update it anymore, rather it wants to install the whole game again ...

After the update mouse movement is incredibly jerky. It goes away when doing stuff like watching Netflix, copying files or playing a game.

I Googled a bit and it seems the issue isn't that uncommon (with previous updates), but none of the solutions work.

Any ideas?

Perhaps too obvious, but have you tried disabling mouse acceleration? It's called 'enhance pointer precision' in mouse settings. Uncheck it.

Soo.. How do I avoid the update? I'm on Windows 10 home and don't really want to fuck up my stuff.

Would also like to know.

Okay so you really can't...on pro you can delay feature updates a month

There are hacky ways to disable update

But eventually stuff won't work if you delay too long...my advice is to do a full iso backup (image of your install) and upgrade. Worse case scenario you can flash back to that image if the upgrade goes bad

Well it finally updated. Broke a lot of stuff. I am now typing this from Linux. I will dual boot with a fresh install later but I am kinda enjoying Linux. Happy Anniversary everyone.

This doesn't seem to be happening to me but has a familiar ring to it. Is it another old bug that has made a reappearance?

It did this to me too. As a bonus the default browser setting didn't even work for some mysterious reason in the new Settings panel, it refuses to change and I had to go find the old default apps Control Panel to set my default browser to Chrome. What a mysterious and coincidental "bug" in this update that doesn't let me change my default browser from Edge. A lot of people have reported this "bug" in the Windows 10 Reddit too.

Had this bug before the update tbh the settings app has been hit and miss with a lot of settings for me since installing 10.

Reinstall it, it helped me in the past with other apps Windows was whining about.

Edit: Steam's been kinda funky now, the program itself is open but it takes 20 seconds for the god damn window to pop up. It only happens if you have the shortcut in the taskbar, the tray icon loads it up fast as usual. Annoying. What is it with Windows updates always fucking up how Steam works as a taskbar shortcut? God dammit Tim Sweeney was right. Now I have to use the infinitely inferior way of opening steam via the tray icon unless I want to wait 20+ seconds every time.
I've had a weird bug where right-clicking and opening File Location would fail. Is the shortcut's path also the really complicated-looking type? There's a difference between the simpler kind.

What a strange update.

Installed it on my old Core 2 Duo machine with 6GB or RAM. Worked fine.

Installed it on my i7 desktop with 16GB of RAM... It couldn't open programs or menus after I logged in. Just got that whirling circle whenever I moved my cursor over anything I might have wanted to interact with. The startup menu would break to make things even better. Windows store would vanish (Uhh... Damn?) Startup apps would just implode rather than load etc.

I had to use a sub account just to get into the settings menu to reboot into safe mode. Only then could I roll back the update. Once I rolled it back, everything worked again.

So my upgrade went fine. Or i havent notice any shit yet.

But anyway. Is there a way to change the startmeny? I do really hate that its shows all my apps all the time. I do not find any setting to remove this

nope. you're stuck with it. i'm not sure if it's safe to download classicshell yet but that would be your best option i guess once it's sorted.

I hardly ever used All Apps, so it taking over the start menu is lame.

I also made sure to immediately remove Edge, Store, and Action Center from the taskbar. Never used that shit.

I'm pretty sure the OS actually takes longer to boot up now, too.

Also, all of my NVIDIA Control Panel settings were reset. Not sure if that was because of the update or something else.
