Windows Phone 7 |OT|

Just picked up my Omnia7, quite nice. Feels light and almost too fragile in my hand as I have been using an old Nokia N95. It's a bit bigger than I thought it would be but damn that screen looks great. Synced up Live and Facebook and have downloaded some apps and all is going smoothly so far. Just wish I could get a screen protector or case for it as I don't want to scratch or dent it too soon. Zune works great here, 8GB is ok for now and it's never going to be my primary media player so it's not that much of an issue for me.

One question about data usage - is it possible to disable the phone from pulling live data from various networks on the fly? My plan is only 1.5GB/month and I don't want Xbox Live/Facebook/Hotmail eating that up without some kind of control.

While I haven't looked, I suspect you can configure it under settings. When you install new apps, it asks you during configuration whether it can use live tiles, etc (and you can change it after). I assume the same is true of the OS apps.

That said, I doubt it's an issue. I'm really not seeing a major amount of data usage from that sort of stuff.

Cheers - I will look into settings parameters for live tiles. Still noobing out on this phone for now, really impressed with it. Need a protector soon as I hate seeing fingerprints or even dust building up on it :(

Friend got a Focus. Looks amazing (and surprisingly, not as ugly as I'd thought). I'm holding out for the next set of hardware. Sprint and Verizon need to announce their phones asap.

I wouldn't worry about your data to much. I've had my phone since late October and using Live to check email every hour, Facebook and twitter on the fly, I've only used 30mb.

I was really paranoid when I was told my contract was caped at only 250MB, but Orange has an App that allows to check data at anytime.

Just don't browse data heavy websites, stream music or video without WiFi. ^_^

Anybody has tried "Mirage Case for Samsung Focus" from att? (this is the soft case).

I just got it today and while the case has cut-outs at the top and bottom for USB and headphone connection, it doesn't have any on the sides. So when I slide it over my phone, the pressure of the case on the on/off button turns the device off!

There are etchings on the side of the case where the buttons are but I am not sure if I am supposed to cut them through myself or I got a bad case or this is the way it is supposed to be.

Very disappointed.

Looked like they were having some issues yesterday, I'm guessing they got more traffic than they expected.

I wish there was an RSS feed for updates to Marketplace -_-

no mention ot flash for that jan update?
They've mentioned everything at this point. Which is why I'm switching to "believe it when I see it" mode on this update. I have a hard time believing that we'll see Turn-by-Turn navigation in a January update.

If everything they say is in this patch I can't imagine seeing it before February.

Why? I'm not sure it'll be there, but I think you're missing the timeline. The release candidate for the OS was locked down months before launch. So who knows how long this has been in development. I suspect it's been in progress since well before the lockdown.

To be completely fair, the only official timeline has been "early 2011". It could be February, maybe even March or April at the latest, but most rumors point to Janurary sometime.

I hope phone sell better when Verizon and Sprint hops on board ... so far the numbers that are reported (based on Facebook app usage) are quite depressing.

I think it's a great phone ... Costco is having a sale on Dec. 2nd. Not as good as Walmart free phone deal but still $50.00 off Focus. Thinking about taking mine back and repurchased (silly costco doesn't do price adjust) and used the money to buy a good bluetooth headset.

Yeah, I'm starting to get discouraged...no word on sales from MS. This phone deserves to succeed...hopefully the first update will bring it up to speed with the competition.

I think it actually did better in the EU than it did in NA. Makes sense though when you look at overall trends. I do think it'll be helped by word of mouth, but it does need to hit all carriers.

As for the marketplace... IDK there was a descent amount at launch, but I haven't seen any real big new apps in a few weeks honestly.

Hope the big update generates a 2nd round of buzz for the platform.

let's measure the success of WP when all 4 major carriers in the US have a WP for sale. samsung committing to WP over Android 2 to 1 and manufacturers like Asus and Acer on board, i honestly can't see how this can't succeed.

I hope that this line of phones does well, if for nothing other than my generic preference for having more viable competitors in any given market.

It's funny. While I'm completely happy with my phone thus far, prior to purchase one of the main attractions was the planned integration with Vail.

Now we come to find out Vail is better known as Fail or Bail. It's questionable whether it may be canceled entirely. :/

At least WHS will be supported until 2013. For that reason, I just ordered an EX490 (I'll be upgrading the CPU and maybe memory) to take over for my EX470. It's treated me well, but even with some upgrades it is too antiquated for my needs. Not sure if I'll sell it or use it to test out some stuff.

What kind of numbers are we looking at here? Surely not Kin levels of bomba, right?

There are probably more people in this thread than there are owners of a Kin.

The only numbers I've seen were about 125k Facebook activations for Windows Phone
And why do you think anybody who got a Windows Phone will go to Facebook and "activate" (I don't even know what it means to "activate" you Windows Phone on Facebook).

I have a Windows Phone and a Facebook account. I don't care for using my phone to access Facebook.

iOS installed base: 125 million
Facebook for iPhone: 53 million

About 40%.

So let say that hold the same for WP7, then MS sold abourt 200K+ during the first month. I am not going to say that's a great numbers. The launch day was pretty pathetic and their "Really" ads is probably the worst. People want smartphone so they can replaced their netbooks, laptops etc not so they can glance at information. They should have have concentrate on how well intergrate the phone is to Facebook and Live ID and even Xbox Live and show off the snappy inteface instead of those "really" commercial that tell nothing about the phone.

Anyway, yeah, may be 2nd launch of Dell and the incoming Verizons will help give it 2nd boost. Microsoft also need to step on the pedal and release next firmware. I hope they are serious about mobile market and willing to dive in as they did with Xbox. (and hope they learn a things or two from the Zune failures)

There is far less incentive for people to install a dedicated Facebook app on Windows Phone 7 than any other device, since much of it is already integrated. Also consider the fact that it's not like Facebook for iPhone reached 40% of all iPhone users right away.

That's true, anyway regardless if the phone sold great I am sure Microsoft would be shouting from the roof like they do with Kinect. Everyone that I show the phone to was impress with it so here hoping that MS is in this for a long haul.

This. I doubt a ton of peopld don't even bother instsalling the dedicated Facebook app if the built-in functionality is all they need.

*Edit* Oh, forgot to post in here earlier, but I got my Focus!!! :D Tons of people were buying it at the AT&T store, but admittedly a lot of them were MS employees since I live in Redmond :lol

I tried the HD7 yesterday at a mall. What a great interface! Everything seemed so coherent and smooth. I just got an evo, but I'll definitely consider a WP7 phone when I have to get a new phone.

I thought all MS employees get free Windows Phone 7....

Getting a c101a7e3 error anytime I try to download anything from marketplace. So annoying. Been reading for some people its gone away after a little while so I guess I'll just have to be patient.

Well, developers are already complaining.

Two developers, Justin James and Nicholas Yu (the latter making GoVoice) have noted that they won't receive payments for their apps till February, which is quite far off especially if like Yu, your app launched with Windows Phone 7. Going further, the developers complain that there are no analytics to measure how popular their app is--in other words, they don't know how many they have sold.

That is a really large lack in functionality for app developers. Surprised so many app devs are jumping on board before MS rolls this stuff out completely.

The numbers track both the "Windows Phone" native app and the actual Facebook application independently.

Hmm, can you actually buy without contract? I don't think so even if it does display the price?
Yes, I got the 16 GB one off contract for $499. For some reason it says the estimated delivery date is the 22nd instead of the 14th for me even though I ordered it a day prior to the big launch.
