Winona Ryder joins 'Star Trek'
Actress to play Spock's mother in Abrams film
By MICHAEL FLEMING

"Star Trek" is beaming up Winona Ryder.

Paramount Pictures and director JJ Abrams have set Ryder to play the Vulcan mother of a young Spock (Zachary Quinto).

Scripted by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the film revolves around the Starfleet Academy days of the crew of the Starship Enterprise. Chris Pine has been set to play Capt. Kirk, Simon Pegg will play Scotty, Karl Urban is Dr. McCoy and Eric Bana will play the villain, Nero.

Ryder recently wrapped "The Informers," a Gregor Jordan-directed adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel, and the Geoffrey Haley-directed "The Last Word."

She is in pre-production on the Rebecca Miller-directed "Private Lives of Pippa Lee."

I'm willing to bet that's a typo and was meant to read "The mother of the Vulcan, Spock..."

Yeah. I can't seriously imagine them trying to remove the half-human/half-Vulcan aspect of Spock, though. The conflict between the two parts is his big thing.

I think she'd be fine. I can picture her with that moptop and the pointy ears already.

Besides I think she fits the "sci-fi" roles quite well if you know what I mean. I liked her in Alien 4.

This film is going to be absolute garbage.

The last thing I heard about this film
from a friend of a friend...of a friend
is that Abrams is taking the alternate dimension/timeline thing to the Nth degree by redesigning the Enterprise.

Apparently it won't be the 'classic' design we all know and love. Which sort of begs the question, why bother doing this at all? If you're radically rewriting such a rich universe, why not just create your own from scratch.

Bleh.

WTF! She turned 36 last week. Not that old. Yet she looks like someone in her mid 40s. Don't do drugs kids.

How many 36-year-olds do you know? I mean, non-movie star ones. Some people just look like that at 36.

Hmm, looks like she is already in character....

Yeah, hopefully this is a typo, because Spock's mom is DEFINITELY human.

If they screw this part of continuity up, god knows what else they will fuck with.

Simon Pegg is the only good thing about this movie.

I agree just as long Pegg doesn't try and force a Scottish accent.

I suppose an 'alternate reality' Scottie would be good, I suspect that Pegg won't get any time in this film to 'do his thing' owing to the fact that it's an ensemble piece with Spock (Quinto) as the protagonist his character, Scottie is basically set in the engine room while everyone is partying on the bridge.

all that's left is for Ben Stiller to play an easily aggrevated Officer constantly having to suffer his bumbling, brand new cadets. But somehow they overcome all the obstacles and defeat the Borg played by Patton Oswald

Fixed for awfulness.

I just hate it when they do shit like this.

I'm no trekkie by any means, but I don't know any that want this movie to be made.

does that make sense? Surely the crew of a starship didn't just happen to also be exactly the same group that went around together at the Academy? Or does Starfleet hand over the keys to the best starship to the prom king at a big party?

Angelina Jolie played Colin Farrell's mom in Alexander and she's only a few months older than him.
And look how well that turned out.

Anyway, wasn't spock's mother alive during the TNG era? That would make her really old... None of this makes any sense.

EDIT: Or was that a different wife? ...

JJ Abrams is making this, believe it or not, an alternate universe Trek. Alot of things aren't going to be the same.

Apparently Spock (played by Zachary Quinto from Heroes) will be one of the few remaining Vulcans after their planet is destroyed by the Romulans. Also Spock will have emotions....

Make of that what you will.
