Witcher or Mass Effect Series?

Dang some of you saying Witcher 3 is better than whole mass effect series has me so confused. That's why it must be story because I don't know who this Yennifer chick is or Ciri and I don't really care about them yet but I'm supposed to chase them down for ten hours. The world is beautiful though and the side stories are fun although they get similar in terms of gameplay. Part of me thinks I'll enjoy a more focused linear RPG series then an open world one so I'm about to pick up Mass Effect but these grand claims about Witcher 3 are making me think if I get invested I'll be getting a bonafide masterpiece.

Witcher 3 is a bonafide masterpiece IMHO, and what makes it so would be the details. Sure, the macroplot is fairly ho-hum fantasy, but so is Mass Effect. Also the ending of Mass Effect 3 went a long way towards ruining the whole series for me. I would have been happier if Shep just woke up and it had all been a drreeeeaaaam maaaaaaaaan.

If as you say in the OP you're big on gameplay, I'd recommend, of all games, starting with Mass Effect 2. It's the best overall package in terms of gameplay + story, and it's only ~35 hours (like all the Mass Effects) as opposed to The Witcher 3, where you're chasing Ciri with little overall plot movement for something closer to 60 before the story even really gets going.

Decided on Mass Effect Series and just picked it up at GameStop. I'm Spock Shephard (what? I'm acting like an RPG guy). I'm from Earth and I'm a Vanguard and so far I have been a little pissy at people while trying to act nice at occasion if I like how you look! Combat and movement is rough but I'm going to enjoy it dammit :) I died a lot cause I ran out of my 5 medi gels. So did Kaiden but we made it through to have my mind messed up by the Prothean thing. Now at Citadel.

Any beginners tips?

Glad with my decision although if I actually enjoy this series then maybe I will pick up Witcher series after.

If you ask me, The Witcher gets increasingly better as the series goes on, and Mass Effect just gets worse and worse despite the first game showing so much potential.

Regardless, The Witcher 3 is not a game to miss unless you just can't stand medieval fantasy.

Mass effect.

Hate witchers combat.

I'm tired of the sword and magic fantasy setting in all these RPGs.

Rpg Games like fallout, mass effect, deus ex and shadow run are a breath of fresh air.

Now a days any game that even has that medieval setting, immediately gets blown off as uninterested. Not even elder scrolls is holding my interest anymore.

Witcher has an interesting world, good quest designs and some pretty decent to good writing.

Mass Effect has none of the above and isn't fun to play either.
I prefer sci-fi over medieval fantasy by a long shot but therw are very few good sci-fi video games. It's really unfortunate.

Also, I feel like The Witcher as a series actually progressed qualitywise whereas Bioware has the habbit of making it's sequels progressively worse than the games that came before it.

Theys very different beasts but Mass Effect is a much more limited/linear series than Witcher, but on the flipside ME is actually fun to play.
