With NX on the horizon, how will Wii U be remembered?

It gave me The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, and a great smash game.

I will never forget ;-;7

yup.

Anyway the past is in the past, who cares about dumb wii u, bring on NX and F-Zero

its first party library will become more revered as time goes on

I feel like the Wii U will also be regarded as the last of an era for Nintendo

It will be remembered as Nintendo's worst home console and a failure in every sense of the word.

Despite that, it still has a number of very good-to-great games that should be remembered fondly, but none that I would classify as an "all-time classic", something that all of their home platforms have had at least one of (though maybe/hopefully Zelda U will be that game).

Utter failure. No new 3D mario game and possibly no new exclusive Zelda game (if rumor is true that Zelda is coming to NX as well).

Super Mario 3D World isn't a 3D Mario game?! You folks come up with the most shitty arguments to justify your hatred for a console that you probably don't even own.

smh

An Honest Mistake. I get what they were going with all the tablet craze and all but this is the one time they should have put innovation aside and focused on maintaining their ground.

i'll remember it as the console that allowed Nintendo to raise its game in term of next gen graphics, even art wise. The things they did with light.. It's sooo promising.

A misguided failure would be putting it lightly. Nintendo knows how to make compelling software, but they really seem to have lost their way with hardware. I hope the NX bucks the trend set by these past few gens.

As the one who received Splatoon, one of the coolest new IPs of the last 5 years IMO. Yes, the Gamepad looks like a tablet made by Playskool, the OS can look like a full screen mode smarthphone OS from 2008 but in terms of games, It's where it truly shines and will be remembered. It has the best Mario Kart, the best Smash, incredible exclusives such as Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles X and lot's of 2D platformers gems as well. I think it will be more like a Dreamcast 2.0. An underpowered console with an awesome library of games.

This is unfair to the GameCube. Nintendo's Dreamcast is more apt.

I was going to call it a Nintendo Dreamcast....but the Dreamcast got third party support :l.

Namco, Capcom and other studios produced a lot of great stuff for the Dreamcast and heck, Sega got more genre veritey despite EA jumping ship (Sega Sports series). If you owned a Dreamcast, you WERE happy with support from everyone.

With the Wii U, you got Nintendo games and little else. I know Bamco and Sega offered exclusive games (Lost World, Boom) and support for major Nintendo games (MK8, Smash) but still, I feel calling it a Nintendo Dreamcast is discrediting what the Dreamcast did.

A system that while it wasn't capitalized on like it could have been, did have a good selection of quality games. Hampered once again by the lack of any type of account-based purchases, it was the last of its kind. And that's a good thing.

for me "that shitty underpowered system that had Bayonetta and Monster Hunter"

hopefully NX has Bayonetta and Monster Hunter or else fuck NX. Nintendo software just isn't anywhere near as appealing to me as those two IPs.

When even Nintendo recognize 3D Land and 3D worlds are an attempt to reunite 2D and 3D, you have your answer.

"on the horizon" means something that is coming soon, which is not NX's case.

Wii U will be fine as the years go by

Isn't every prediction, forecast and leak pointing to an NX launch in late 2016? I'd call that on the horizon.

I love my Wii U, but recognize the immense lost potential, shitty OS/account systems, and underpowered state it wound up with.

But what a solid set of classics in SM3DW (I say that as someone who far prefers the SM64/Sunshine/Galaxy vein), MK8, Bayo, W101, etc.

It'll be fondly looked back upon like the GameCube I think. It has some really great games, some of which are the best entries in their series (Smash Bros., Mario Kart). It'll also be looked back upon as something that never saw its true potential due to poor marketing and sales that didn't allow for much experimentation.

I love my Wii U, personally, so I hope it's fondly remembered.

They'll call it Nintedo's last real console.
Or the good old days when Nintendo still believed in buttons.

If you tell me what the NX is I might have better answers

I purchased my Wii U for Mario Maker.

Was it worth the money? No probably not.

Am I happy with the purchase? Yes.

All in all, if you bought one and are happy with it, who cares if it was a "failure", if you bought one and feel burned, hopefully the NX has what you want or maybe its time to be done with Nintendo consoles. This whole "the console was a failure" stuff doesn't really apply to the individual, so don't let the overall sales performance of the console change the way you feel about it.

The necessary failure to get Nintendo in a better direction.

Some kick ass first party games stuck on a not so kick ass console.

smh

You know exactly what I mean. I will not discuss that anymore.

I'm sure I don't know what you mean.

Seriously.

When even Nintendo recognize 3D Land and 3D worlds are an attempt to reunite 2D and 3D, you have your answer.

Nope. I consider that 2.5D. It's not a full 3D game like Galaxy.

surely you guys don't have to derail this thread with yet another "discussion" about how many D's a Mario game has

A failure of a console all round.

In reality, it was a failure of a console with many great games on. Still more great exclusives than PS4 and X1 combined.

I'm sure I don't know what you mean.

Seriously.

http://mynintendonews.com/2013/10/1...tended-to-bridge-gap-between-2d-and-3d-mario/

“Yes, with the Mario games you have the 2D side-scrolling games and you have the Mario Galaxy games, which are the 3D titles. People tend to prefer one of those over the other. What we tried to do with Super Mario 3D Land, and what we’re trying to do with Super Mario 3D World is to create a type of three-dimensional Mario game that bridges that gap. We’re trying to do that more with Super Mario 3D World, in particular with the gyro controls, and to try and do that in a way that will enable fans of both to really enjoy playing Mario.”

People will remember the notable high quality games.

Pikmin 3, Captain Toad, Tropical Freeze, Mario Maker, Splatoon, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade X, Pokken, Smash Bros, and Zelda (although those last two may be remembered as NX games as well).

Hopefully Wonderful 101 will become a cult classic one day too. That game deserves to be remembered.

A complete waste of time, and yet another sign that Nintendo is way behind the times.

I got burned on the Wii, and again on the Wii U. I won't fall for it a 3rd time. Last Nintendo console i'll ever buy.

Nope. I consider that 2.5D. It's not a full 3D game like Galaxy.

I know what you mean. But I think we need to come up with some better terminology to describe these games. Mario 64 & Galaxy are 3D with exploration and worlds, Mario 3D Land & World are also 3D games, but they're far more linear and they have levels with a specific goal as opposed to more goals in one area.

Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy is a 3D adventure game.
Mario 3D Land/Word is basically just Super Mario Bros. but in 3D (that's simplified, but essentially that's what it is).

The first games that pop into my head when I think of the Wii U are Splatoon and Smash 4, two games well worth owning the system for so that's good.

WiiU is inferior to GameCube and Dreamcast.
I say itll be remembered as an extension of the Wii.

I agree with this statement; carried on the quality of the Wii software library (Nintendo made games) on-to a new generation with a failed gimmick that failed to push people to 'get' it.

As the Wii U was a era where Nintendo polished/perfect genre's rather then reinvent the wheel. We got games like that (Wonderful 101, Game & Wario, Splatoon) but the main focus was taking tired IP (Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Brothers) and perfecting them.

I didn't agree with one of them (3D Mario like Galaxy I prefer over 3D World due to more flexibility with Mario's controls) but the rest were fantastic from impressions/demos/ect I played :).

This is how I'll remember the Wii U thanks to GAF.
