Wolfenstein: The New Order is single player only

Yup. RTCW to this day is one of my favorites. Hell there are still servers running the game and once in a while I'll jump on and play it still. RTCW > ET in my opinion. Also as others said you can say oh the first ones didn't have multiplayer. That doesn't matter. The series evolved to include one of the best multiplayers ever then they shit it all away with the 2009 one which was just awful and now they've taken another step back and dropped it all together.
QFMFT

I spent countless hours on RTCW Xbox and to this day nothing has ever touched the greatness or even scratched the itch.

Wolfenstein 2009 had the basis of being a pretty decent attempt but was clearly sent to die with 6 months development and pretty much completely unplayable lag.

I'm ok with this. Wolfenstein is great, but it's just one of those games where the multiplayer will die out in a month

Let's ask ourselves a simple question? Which studio owned by Bethesda could create multiplayer component? id Software is still trying to avoid doom after Rage and Doom 4 issues. Arkacane doesn't have any experience in this area and it is busy with Dishonored 2. Machinehead is created by former Starbreeze and those guys aren't multiplayer wizards. Bethesda could hire some contractors to create multiplayer component. And everybody remembered how good was multiplayer in Wolfenstein 2009. It was created by unknown studio, that was closed shortly after the game release. As Splash Damage isn't on everybody's wishlist after Brink, there aren't many developer teams for hire with very good multiplayer experience. So at the moment I am happy to have good singleplayer game. Maybe one day Bethesda will be able to revive Enemy Territory as viable multiplayer brand.

So many games that don't need multiplayer get it tacked on.

Then ones that genuinely do need a big attempt at it, don't.

This is a weird industry.

They just need to figure out a way to monetize "free" multiplayer like Valve did with TF2 and then make their multiplayer an updated version of ET and they could make a killing.

God, I can't even imagine how many hundreds of hours I blew on ET back in the day.

With a game were character customization(skins, hats) doesn't really work it's hard to do. They have been trying to for awhile with CS. Seems like the community map packs are a start in that direction.

Because Splash Damage wasn't involved, I never had hope that it's MP would ever touch RTCW. I'm a fan of RTCW (OSP and CAL how I miss you) and ET more than a fan of Wolfenstein as an IP. No MP for me personally means I have zero interest now.

Also, RTCW>ET.

A possible alternative to people disappointed by this.

As much as I can't wait for ROTT I don't think that's the type of multi fans of RTCW/Enemy Territory want. The ex Starbreeze guys attempts at multi were pretty fucking awful as well so I'd rather they concentrate on single player. I would rather they gave Splash Damage another chance at doing it (and I'm one of the few who enjoyed Brink, apart from the launch issues it had) but they're busy making Dirty Bomb anyway.

I had zero interest in this until I learned that it was SP only and developed by Starbreeze. Hopefully it turns out well. It's definitely on my radar now.

No multiplayer, no buy. That simple.

It feels weird to have that thought again for the first time in years and years, but yeah, that's actually how I feel too. This is literally the one big entry I would want to have it's focus on multi.

Hell, even if it just came out as a PC focused multi-only title, that'd be great to me. Probably have a lot better word of mouth and general reception than this 60 dollar, single player entry will get in the end anyway.

ET is pretty much my fav multiplayer FPS ever. This news kind of sucks. But then again, mp would probably end up being CoD-lite if they decided to include it. It seems like the industry is heading in that direction after playing the 2009 Wolfenstein game and Halo 4. The first person shooter golden age (1999-2003 {Quake, UT, RtCW, Halo, CS}) is over and now we are left with spray and pray games with random shit flying everywhere.

No it isn't
RtCW and ET definitely were. The one-sided objective stopwatch gametype is undoubtedly one of the most competitive fps gametypes of all time.

Can't believe people still cheer this on. Yes, please strip more modes.

Btw, who the hell plays Wolfenstein for single player? Maybe 20+ years ago, yeah.

You can't compete against Halos, CODs and Battlefields so why even bother. Let them make the BEST single player ever. Last I checked, Spec Ops:The Line was severely gimped by the inclusion of multiplayer and Bioshock Infinite did a pretty good job without one.

Even better! Whoo

Hearing this news actually makes me more interested in this game.

Same here

I'm cheering because they focused on the mode I care about instead of spreading time, talent and resources on MP shit I'll never touch.

I do. The original, RTCW and Wolf 2009 all had single player campaigns I love dearly and that's why I mostly enjoy the series. The multi of RTCW was good and Enemy Territory was brilliant but the multi's never been my main reason for loving the series.

A lot of us that love RTCW and ET probably feel the way most people would feel if they decided to make Bioshock Infinite or Fallout a multiplayer only game.

RTCW had the best FPS multiplayer I've ever experienced...

...but the multiplayer in Wolfenstein on PS360 was disgustingly bad, so maybe it's for the best.

God I wish they could just release an HD upgrade version of the exact multiplayer that was in RTCW + Enemy Territory :( using the engine from this game and packed as its 'multiplayer mode'

Who the hell plays Wolfenstein for multiplayer?

Considering the only splash Wolfenstein has made after it's original kit was the shining reception RTCW MP and ET had, probably quite a lot of people who would still be interested in this. The single player on the modern entries weren't exactly popular nor have they been remembered all too well. That aside, I completely agree that you can't compete with a COD or a Halo or a Battlefield but there's alternative models for this sort of thing. Rather than chasing down a 60 dollar console retail product, especially when your heritage doesn't exactly gel with it, it'd probably be more wise to take another path, IMO. So, from my perspective it's another case of trying to push a B-tier product as a AAA one.

Not surprising given that it was already known they really wanted to focus on the single player. Sucks for the longtime fans of the series, but come on, it sounds like Wolfenstein multiplayer hasn't been good since RTCW/ET. The game isn't even by Splash Damage, so it's doubtful that anybody would have been pleased with it anyway.

Surprised this hasn't happened yet.

Machinegames is a pretty small team, iirc, and helmed by the ex starbreeze guys who were always more SP/atmosphere, almost RPG driven, than MP anyway, so I'm not all that surprised.

Gimme gameplay clips

I'd buy this.

Classic RTCW is the best multiplayer FPS I've ever experienced in my life. Maps like Beach, Depot and Assault are among my favorites. All the insanity, the choke points, the progress, the amazing stable 64 players servers (HAPPY PENGUIN!). God....I wish I could still play it...

ET is great but it's no RTCW.

Anyway, I am okay with the new RTCW being a single player only game. Let's see if they can pull it off before judging it.

Quake Wars and Brink bombed so I really didn't think they would go the MP route again. Looks to be bringing in some Serious Sam influences which could be fun.

No MP = no buy. I only played RtCW for the multiplayer and I was hoping we'd finally see a decent console shooter again. Nope.

I'd buy this.

God you and me both. I spent so much time on the Happy Penguin servers back in the days. Depot was epic on those servers and then they had this one called tank and I swear to god the same game could last for a day and still keep going. There were times I logged off at midnight. Logged back in at about 10 or 11 am and the very same game I left was still going and I'd play till 6 or 7 and night and it'd finally end.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer is the only good part of that game. It was amazing, in fact :(

I actually really liked the singleplayer too. The only level I hated hate hated was the one where you had to get to the base through the woods and had to keep the guard towers from setting off an alarm. I was glad when the 360 version split that level in 2. It's strong point though without a doubt was the multiplayer.

I. An't honestly believe the people in here who are praising no mp aref fans of the series Rtcw had like so many others have said one of the best multiplayers of all time. I woulld rather have a mp only downloadable totle than this.

You guys cheering this on have to just like it on principle of a dev not " tacking" on multiplayer. I agree in theory but this isn't the i.p. for it.

I am actually more interested now. I want a good story instead of some paper thin crap. There is enough multiplayer out there already.
