I am not normally claustrophobic, but I had an MRI and I got pretty close to panic. This would do me in.

Honestly, the entire way of life in NYC triggered so many anxieties I didn't even know I had.

Being in a mass of people that large walking around with no personal space and people bumping into you constantly without apology...

Barreling through the darkness underground with uncertain momentum and strange noises...

But my uncomfortable memories of that don't really compare to the amount of anxiety by proxy I feel just looking at her situation.

It's not my place to tell her how to live anymore than it is hers to tell me. But she's paying $200 less than what we used to pay to rent a house to live in a room the size of a closet in that house. I'm pretty sure I couldn't stand living in my closet.

I know she likes where her closet is. OBVIOUSLY.

Oh, and for the guy who wondered about how hot the apartment gets ... I would wager hotter than hell.

That's what I'm thinking. Even if she spends a lot of time outside, she has to sleep. And with her bed at the ceiling and heat rising. She should get like a bunch of tiny fans and rig them to parts of her bed.

NYC is the closest thing in the country you have to a libertarian environment. Meaning the least amount of planning and government aid went into its construction, less than any other city, and certainly much less than suburbs, which are only possible through central government planning and subsidies.

You say that based on how it was constructed, but look at how it exists and how it is managed today.

$700 a month sounds like a bargain to me, especially for that location. I could certainly make due.

Same. I live in a bachelor in Toronto and I pay $800. The area is okay but it's no Manhatten.

Meh, no way that's 90 SF if you include the bathroom. That said, it's small as hell but she seems to have done a nice job with it. The super high ceilings obviously help quite a bit.

Beyond that, New York gets ungodly hot in the summers. They have to set up cooling centers, and tens of people (mostly the elderly and people with circulation problems) die in apartments without air conditioning.

Still, its marginally less socialist than the suburbs in operations, the difference being the a choice of government run transportation, density of charter and private schools and a government in favor of pricing roads.

There are just more choices here and many government failures can be avoided, with cash.

We have a saying here in Austin, "Our houses are small, because we're never in them."

I assume there is even more cool shit to do in NY than here so smaller places would be okay :D

There's a reason for that.

Yes, it's nice to live in Wisconsin. :)

(unless you're implying I have a big apartment for a cheap cost and it's shitty, which it's not. :P)

Hey, someone who gets it.

Someone has to, I'm just glad it's not me. ;)

Didn't we already have thread about apartment's like this before. There was that one guy who had room for his bunk bed, that had the desk under it and he had a bathroom with barely any room to actually open his door all the way. "It's a good location."
Pffft.

Crazy woman, what else is there to be said.

NO, it's dumb. my two-bedroom in Brooklyn is 1200 and my living room is just as big as hers. THERE. ARE. NO. "LUXURIES" to be had where she is at. NONE. none! it's dumb people like her that drive up prices for no good reason.

and I live here too and I'm trying to think why anyone in their right mind would pay this ridiculous prize. it's stupid.

1200 and your living room is just as tiny as her POS closet-apartment? lol.

Sometimes I just can't wrap my head around the cost of living in places like NY. $700 here will get you a nice 1 if not 2 bedroom apartment with appliances. I could not stomach moving somewhere where $700 gets me a place the size of my walk-in closet.

She worked with what she got and she is happy so, I can't be mad at her.

Props to her.. I personally wouldnt be able to do something like that.

I'd probably make the sacrifice and move to new jersey than live in that closet.

Further reference reference: It'll get you a shit hole here. I live in one.

You would be surprised how much easier and cheaper it can be for a single person to eat out all the time. A slice of pizza is always a subway fare.
You're a landlord. Sounds like a nightmare in NYC. Tenants have tons of rights here and evicting troublesome ones is costly.

I've known a few landlords and most couldn't do it in the long term.

Eh, I've lived in worse apartments, thats not a bad living space for one person.

We pass those costs onto other tenants. Does not cost us a dime, just other renters.

The city would be so much cheaper for renters to live in if government got out of the way.

for New York genius. she's basically has everything crammed in something equal to my living room. though I'd have to looka t the pictures real close.

fake edit : no, I was wrong I think my living room is about twice as big by just eyeballing it.

Meh. Stretching room is overrated. I live in a tiny bedroom and share a tiny kitchen/living space with 3 other guys, but I don't think I'm cramped. If anything, it motivates my ass to get outside once and a while.

I'd have absolutely no problem living in that space. (Seriously.)

Not for $700, mind you, and I'd have to get rid of a bunch of stuff, but hey, if I really really really liked the location, it could happen.

yeah I'd need quite a bit more space then that to live in. Props to her for pulling it off.

My bedroom is bigger than her entire apartment but if I had to add up how much room I'd need just for my stuff , well about 400 square feet, not counting bathrooms/kitchen/dining room would do it for me.

My freshman dorm room was smaller than that and I didn't mind. And I've lived in a few efficiency apartments that weren't all that different in size either. Don't see what the big deal is. If you want to leave your living space for a little bit, then you can just go outside.

I think I've lived in a similar environment, except it was in shared residence with no windows and in the basement... I was living in a rental storage closet practically
