WhiteKnightGaf.gif - gafers who ride heroically to rescue damsels in virtual distress from awful sexist dragons.

White Knight Syndrome

buy white knight syndrome mugs, tshirts and magnets
n. A personality characteristic found in most males that lead them to:
1. rush to the aid of any female they see who appears in any form of distress.
2. Become attracted to said damsel in distress.
3. Follow the dying code of chivalry and generally act like a nice guy.

Also called young man's disease.

From urbandictionary. Pretty accurate, actually.

The issue with white knight syndrome is that it's a reflex. Regardless of whether or not the woman should be defended, she is defended, and often there's a pedestal involved.

There are times when it's a good call, and times when it's really not, but it's kind of hardwired for me at least. I know I reflexively want to protect women.

The problem is that the mere act of describing something as sexist apparently constitutes white-knighting. I'm not sure how merely having the opinion that sometimes, somewhere, women are treated less favorably than men is tantamount to wanting to "defend" them, but that's how GAF treats it.

As for this video, I guess it's kind of like Chapelle's Show. It's funny if you recognize it as satire of the ludicrous social codes of the 1950s, and it's also funny if you're the kind of person who takes it at face value and doesn't recognize it as satire. But those two people aren't laughing for the same reason.

There is an issue in that lots of people are treated unfavourably all the time, but when it's women it becomes a much bigger hot button topic. I do believe that gender inequality shouldn't exist (except in specific situations, like highly physical jobs), but there is a difference between defending someone who is being oppressed and defending someone mostly due to their gender. People might say 'stop yelling at the poor woman!' but won't say 'stop yelling at the poor guy!'.

everything is a hot button topic on GAF. like tipping.

when it happens to be about women, X is a white knight, cause it's the easiest insult.

It's twenty years old. And remarkably sophisticated for its time. Sorry twenty-year old comedies can't all be as sophisticated as you and Curb your Enthusiasm.
I don't like Curb your Enthusiasm, I just dislike overuse of laugh tracks :)

You're clearly full of shit. It isn't possible to not like Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Perhaps I never gave it a proper chance because I didn't watch it from the beginning would be more accurate. The episodes I did see didn't inspire me to bother with more anyway.

You should check it out. For obvious reasons, it's got a similar style of comedy to Seinfeld. Although personally I like Curb a little bit better than Seinfeld.

Showed this to my friends a few months back. The girls did not find it funny at all. They understood that it was satire but said it was not funny because "it really is like that". (The guys thought it was hilarious.)

:\ dunno maybe I am blind in this mans world but I really think most guys are not horrible sexists. Well maybe about female drivers, guys can be pretty sexist there I admit.

I really miss classic Harry Enfield :(

These sketches made me roll back in the day but they've lost a little of their sheen over time. I'd like the big hitters of British comedy to put together a feature film in this vein.

Only because a lot of these jokes have been over used by pretty much everyone since then to the point where they've become cliches. This type of stuff was pretty ground breaking when it was first broadcast ~15 years or so ago.

(I kinda feel the same way about a lot of the classic British Comedy, but especially Red Dwarf S05 sadly - hilarious stuff back then but it I've seen these jokes replicated everywhere to the point that watching S05 again recently was quite disappointing. Blackadder S02-04 still stands the test of time though.)

blackadder series 2 and 4 are absolute gold and, while they have definitely aged, have done so like a fine wine. they are totally ridiculous and would never get made today, but remain pretty much flawless.

harry enfield was never exactly at the height of british comedy, though, and chums is very much a product of its time - it doesn't help when there are sketches like the one where kevin the teenager pretends to be from manchester that could only have been written in 1994.

the fast show was always better anyway!

Nah, I didn't really like The Fast Show. I only watched it a few times, but I seem to remember them using the same jokes over and over again which got a bit boring, i.e. they'd have a character with one joke but they'd just play that joke again and again in different environments.

I saw a documentary about one of the dead BBC comedy directors and they stated that the major difference between TFS and HE&C was that TFS was a character based comedy whereas HE&C was gag / punchline based so it had a lot more variety, e.g. Tim Nice But Dim and the paediatrician skit. The evolution of comedy in the UK really is an interesting subject.

that is like, exactly what harry enfield does. the fast show at least has some level of depth and pathos in sketches like rowley birkin & ted & ralph!

man, the final rowley birkin sketch is actually kind of devastating.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It's also true that Blackadder has aged extremely well (first season aside). Interestingly in the pilot for Blackadder, Blackadder is much more like himself (conniving, self-serving but ultimately charming, season 2 onward) and less like the Mr Bean-esque idiot in the first series.

Red Dwarf hasn't aged well at all. I still keep seasons 1-6 close to my heart but they're not holding up well. Red Dwarf ended at Season 6 and I will not hear anything to the contrary.
