Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap VS. Dragon's Curse

I've been discovering the Wonder Boy series these last couple of days. Gave the original a skip because quite frankly I've already played Adventure Island and meh.

Dived straight into Monster Land on my MD/Genesis (converters be cool, y'all). Pretty cool stuff! Stoked for more.

Now, while I've already bought both Dragon's Trap and Monster World to play on my MD/Genesis (these games are ridiculously cheap, I bought all 3 for less than £10) , I'm really not sure where to go next.

Dragon's Curse (on Wii VC) or Dragon's Trap (on MD/genesis)? Also, why?

I'm assuming you mean Dragon's Trap for the Master System, in which case the game is identical in structure and gameplay, with the exception that the PC Engine version is smoother.

Personally I prefer the graphics and music of the Master System version, but both versions are fantastic. You can't go wrong with either.

Greatest 8bit game of all time, imo.

I do mean for the Master System, but the Game Gear version is super cheap too, so if that's better in any way, I don't mind getting it at all (I haven't used my Game Gear in about 21 years... got one as a gift and aside from the pack-in I never got any other game because quite frankly it's a ridiculously bad system when it comes to battery life and most of it's good games are inferior ports. Still have it and it still works, though, so...

The sms version has passwords, the turbo grafx version lets you actually save your game. They are otherwise identical save a few graphics changes. Go with dragon's curse.

Dragon's Curse has better music. Just don't choose to play The Dynastic Hero over the original first (Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair).

I thought the scrolling in the Master System version was weird, the PC-Engine game felt smoother.

God I love both versions.

I had Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap in late '89 and Dragon's Curse in early '91

Edit.

I'd really love it if Sega bought the Gamegear version to the 3DS VC, really want to finish it one of these days but find it hard to play on consoles these days

Wonder Boy III on SMS is one of my favorite 8-bit games. It also has one of the best soundtracks on the system.

Never played Dragon's Curse on TG16 so I can't compare it.

Wonder Boy Dragon's Trap with FM Soundtrack > Adventure Island/Dragon's Curse soundtrack >>> Wonder Boy Dragon's Trap without FM Soundtrack

Adventure Island/Dragon's Curse is better looking though, being on more powerful hardware.

It's been a while but I believe Dragon's Curse runs at 60FPS and Dragon's Trap runs at 30FPS, plus plus Dragon's Curse has proper saves in addition to passwords.

The Game Gear version is not a straight port of Dragon's Trap, by the way: the level design's a little different, they changed the way stats worked, changed what charmstones do, etc. It's not so different that you should play both versions but the director considers the GG version the definitive version.

Oh my goodness.
Listening to that takes me back.
The PC Engine version sounds much better than the master system to me on those Youtube videos!

Ah, VG&CE. I remember one old issue where they printed a walkthrough for Dragon's Trap but it left off at the point where you fight Pirate Dragon because the player who was writing it couldn't figure out how to damage it and ran out of time.

Always remember westone password on the SMS. What a great and beautiful game on the old 8bit Sega.

I owned the PC Engine as a kid as well but never got Wonder Boy for it

I prefer Dragon's Trap because I like SMS music much more than I do Turbo chip music, and because the smoking pig vendor says "SHOPPING PLEASE" in the SMS version while in the Turbo version he just says "SHOPPING", and that's not as funny.

Dragon's Trap for the SMS was my first video game. So awesome.

I love when games first level is the a re-telling of the previous game's last level. SotN does this too!
