Working 3.5mm jack added to the iPhone 7 plus

I don't understand people. This guy made it his personal journey to fix apples rip off design. The whole video is cool af. He's using microscopes, puts chips together, has friends with high tech drills in their living room. And in the end he managed to do something Apple tells customers is not possible for the best engineers in the industry to do. There should be tony stark build it in a cave with a bunch of scraps reactions. Instead we have people here defend one of the most idiotic and impractical design decisions in the past few years. At least give the guy credit. Apple in particular designs their products to not be opened after manufacturering. Putting a functional headphone jack in Is a goddamn miracle.

People still defend apple, did they even watch the video? In the beginning when he opens the iphone and apple said that one piece was very important and it turns out its just a piece of plastic lol

lmfao what!? are you for real?
I'm not real, but I'm inspired by true events.

But to the point, yeah, I was framing it in a funny(ish) way, but it's true that in China it's more acceptable to walk shirtless and you see people doing it reasonably often.
And considering that the average temperature in Shenzhen is what scientists call "as hot as the devil's armpit" I'm not 100% they're in the wrong on that.

I jumped on an unlocked LG G6 for $400. I switched from Apple because of the headphone jack, and the high profit margins they put on their products.

Personally I couldn't give a shit about the headphone jack. Yeah Apple could have probably found a way to include it, but I think a large reason for why they didn't is because future models likely won't be able to accommodate one, and its better to get the controversy out of the way.

I mean in the iPhone 8/X/Edition/Whatever, we are potentially looking at:

Dual cameras front and back.
New wireless charging components.
Bezel-less screen.
Better waterproofing.

All crammed inside a phone chase a little larger than a regular size 7 model. On top of the above it may also need a bigger battery to power the thing.

China is a shirt optional establishment.

Samsung can do this without getting rid of the headphone jack. Apple is full of shit.

Going against Apple's claim that there's no room for a 3.5mm jack inside their iPhone 7 Plus. An American engineer in China managed to add a 3.5mm jack to an iPhone 7 plus and get it to work while fitting it inside the original body.

Does it meet the safety standard though? Asking because it reminds me of the Note7 story where Samsung cramped everything inside which causes the explosions

Who knows. What we do know is that the Galaxy S8 has a headphone jack and it is great. With a screen that is slightly bigger than the iPhone 7 plus.

Don't think Apple gives a damn about people who won't buy their phones because it lacks a headphone jack. Consumers worked around it for whatever reason (status, not an issue for them, etc).

As far as they're concerned, that ship has sailed. It's certainly not an engineering problem.

Google's going to do the same allegedly with one of their Pixels

apple fans let them get away with it

Ok, and what about the regular 7? If it works in the larger phone but not their flagship model this isn't really news

Yeah I'm sure that's why they removed jack and not because of their greed to sell more of their overpriced headphones and to have better control over DRM.

LMAO what is this nonsense. Apple needing to get rid of the headphone jack because they won't have room in the future, even though that's entirely dependent on their own decisions and not some set-in-stone law of the future?

or maybe they just don't give a shit? Not sure why that's so hard for the minority to understand.

I own a 7 and truly don't care. It literally means nothing to me. There was an adjustment period of about a week and then that was it.

Also I stand by the line of thinking that the jack was mainly removed to eventually go bezeless. I bet when the new iPhone pro is opened up there won't be a place for it at all. They made the decision on what features they value more and if consumers don't want it they could not buy it. Well, customers bought it because they still love the phones. Now people are going to say it's because they're "stuck" in the ecosystem lol.

Well yeah, their decision to add in new features and functionality, whilst still trying to maintain a slim form factor. Yeah they could maybe shuffle some components around, or make other changes to fit it in, but obviously they have reached a decision where they believed it to be more hassle than its worth. Judging from iPhone 7 sales, they seem to be right. What would your alternative be?

The GS8 is pretty bezeless and it has a headphone jack. Is Samsung better than Apple at hardware design?

If I was an Apple fan, I probably wouldn't have abandoned them over this. But having a headphone jack is definitely better. I do use bluetooth most of the time, sometimes the headphones are not charged. And I would be annoyed by having to use an adapter that I might lose. And there are times I use the headphone jack and charge the phone. Couldn't do that on an iPhone without buying another adapter.

Be at least as good at hardware design as Samsung and put the headphone jack in?

Realistically how often would you even need to do this?

I am surprised that some people actually believed it was to save space. Come on guys. Just look up how much money they are making selling adaptors and licensing the port.

Prety much every night. I do meditation or listen to podcast in my bed and my wireless Sennheisers are not comfortable for bed time.

And I just fall a sleep listening, without worrying about unplugging and plugging lol

Maybe he should do a mod to make it use the old 30-pin iPod dock connector too, just to satisfy any of the salty holdouts on that design decision too.

Just because it can be done doesn’t mean it should.

Almost like a S8 or N8 with headphone jacks then. What sorcery does Samsung use? 🤔

Cool and it also lost its IP rating because of it. Time to let go of 3.5mm. Do you still use a vcr player too?
This is the worst comparison you could possible use.

Let's compare a media format which has been abandoned for over a decade due to poor quality and convenience to a connection which is compatible with a century's worth of devices and has yet to be surpassed in quality and, in some cases, convenience

umm there's a difference between "pretty bezeless " and actually bezeless save for a small notch. The iPhone pro will not be like the S8. And no, Samsung is far worse at designing their internals (hence phone explosions). Not to mention apple has different shaped batteries, they have the Taptic Engine on the bottom, and more and more.

You're an absolute denial if you think Samsung aint getting rid of the jack soon. Google is already like fuck it lets get it over with this year with both pixels not having it. But I'm sure when Samsung does it it will be apples fault to the few people who care. It's a play for the future and apple just made it early but no matter when they decided to do it the backlash was going to be the same.

Like once a week since that's what happens.

whenever you want to stream video in your bed?

i do it a few times per week

Fair enough, though the logical solutions would be to:

Buy an adapter.
Buy a different phone.

I mean, if having a head phone jack was such a deal breaker, why buy the phone in the first place (unless you haven't).

Personally I moved on from the headphone jack several years ago, so the change did not affect me. It's pretty cool he got this to work. I liked this video a lot more than his previous video, which was just assembly of factory parts. Good stuff.

I think Apple made the right choice in moving away from headphone jacks, mostly because I hate cables and the tech is now to the point where audio quality isn't an issue anymore if you have the right codes. It's simply a way to push manufacturers in a wireless direction. In similar vein is the Android Oreo standard inclusion of APT-X and LDAC, the latter of which is so good you're not going to notice unless you compare to 800+ dollar headphones, and at that point you already have an external DAC. People get to hung up on the PR explanation, I feel.

Cables are overrated, and the "audio quality on BT sucks" argument is about 8 years too late. The tech is there, it's just the lack of willingness from the industry to move there.

It probably wouldn't be a deal breaker if I liked Apple. But it does seem to me that they are making their phone worse for consumers for no good reason.

Hurricane Irma just went past us, I'm safe but I forgot my iPhone headphone adapter and therefore cannot listen to music, internet radio, or podcast where I sheltered despite the fact that there are headphones everywhere around me. A Samsung would come with the additional benefit that I could use the built in FM transmitter to listen to emergency radio broadcasts when the cell towers go down. I'm switching phones soon. I feel unprepared with this phone.

Never actually seen a dude inside the Apple store in Shenzhen without his shirt on though, normally the Apple employees at the door make them reshirt.

Samsung phones have an FM radio? I didn't know that and I have had only Samsung phones for like the past six years.

The renderings I've seen for the next iPhone are pretty close to the S8 except for that ridiculous notch.

If Samsung gets rid of the headphone jack I may switch to an Android phone that has it. Ok. Maybe not, because Samsung Pay. But it will still be anti consumer.

LG V30 with a 3.5mm headphone jack is: IP68 certified water/dust resistance and is MIL-STD-810G spec compliant.
So apple is just lazy for not doing it... ooh sorry courageous
