Working 3.5mm jack added to the iPhone 7 plus

Wait, people thought the reason for removing the headphone jack was lack of space inside the device? Anyone who has seen the internals of the iPhone since the 6 know that's complete bullshit.
That is the reason Apple gave.

Obviously they could've retained the jack if they wanted, particularly within a chassis that is very similar to the previous generation. But having killed off the jack, it means they no longer have to cater for that space in future chassis designs. I bet it will be far more difficult, if not impossible, to do this kind of mod on the next iPhone.

that's straight up the reason they removed it

and also the reason others have removed it

they wanted to make room for their stupid taptic engine and couldn't do it without killing the headphone jack on the smaller iphone 7

The taptic engine was pretty essential for removing the physical home button though. I imagine it will play an even bigger role once the home button has been fully removed as well.

I thought they removed it earlier to take the heat then, because the upcoming 8 wasn't going to have any room for one but they didn't want that to be the story of the 8.

Either way, make fatter phones and include the port ya dinguses, and I'm not talking to just Apple.

Haven't purchased an apple product since the dropping of the 3.5mm jack and probably never will! I love my iPhone 6 but unless the 7s or whatever cheap option has the jack I'm going to finally go android.

Pretty courageous of him to try this.

I chuckled.

Funny, Apple removed the headphone jack for "space savings" and "waterproofing"

I'm looking at the new LG V30, which is slim and waterproof, yet it not only has a headphone jack, it has quad-DACs for high quality sound and the ability to power high-end headphones.

God, Apple sucks ass.

I wouldn't care if apple and it's users just stewed in theirs, but their toxic design philosophy seeps into the rest of the industry, as seen with the Pixel 2. At that point it starts affecting me and i think it's reasonable to be unhappy about that.

Then blame the company that actually made the phone you want to buy

...or they could have been real engineers and designed a slightly smaller taptic vibrate motor instead of the giant rectangle that sits in the device now. I guess Jony Ive was too busy working on his new hype video about machining iphone bodies with stardust or some shit.

i'm not saying it's 100% possible but using the taptic vibrate as the excuse was always bullshit

Maybe because... it wasn't possible? Armchair engineering everywhere in this thread

If they couldn't fit it into their flagship smaller 7, they had to remove it from both. Period.

And just because this guy was able to do it by rearranging the the lower half of the phone does not mean it's going to hold up under various tests and sustain for years on end without causing any issues.

S7/S7 Edge also, ya know, the phone that came out a year and half ago.

Apple just wants that accessory $$, not sure why anyone would think otherwise...as if removing a feature ever benefited the consumers.

The *real* reason for removing the headphone jack is even more sinister and long term. Apple and other megacorporations want to rid the world of anything analog, because it is much harder to control and monetize. If it's digital, it can be restricted and you can be charged to use it. Maybe not right now, but watch out for Bluetooth 15.0 giving you HDCP handshaking issues. *sad laugh*

Subscribed to the channel, he has such a natural charisma and energy for what he is doing, it truly is refreshing.

This is a thing people actually believe huh

I bought a set of these to go along with my wireless ones. I debated whether I should get a standard 3.5mm jack or get the lightening connection ones and only be able to use them on my iPhone. I'm so glad I went for the lightening ones now as it has it's own built in DAC and it makes a massive difference to the audio quality compared to using the 3.5mm jack. I never really missed the 3.5mm jack before because I always had the adapter connected to my headphones, but now I actively wouldn't want to use it again!

well yeah, TBF the dac in the adapter is horrible.

I see a ton of people here championing Airpods. I don't doubt that they were designed well to work with iPhone's with its unique features, but don't they sound inferior next to the array of great bang for buck headphones out there that are 3x to 4x cheaper?

Also, I bought myself a pair of wireless headphones (well technically they have a wire, but you know what I mean) and I've been enjoying the benefits of using them when I'm running around the city while using my wired M-50s for home listening without having to keep track of dongles.

I use my M-50s with my PC, PS4, AND phone so you can see why I wouldn't want to always have a dongle connected to this headphone. My wireless headphones give me 7 hours of battery life (higher than Airpod's from what I understand), probably sound better than Airpods due to their design, always connects instantly (I've never had a bluetooth product connect this fast and consistently), and Taotronics seems to be really good about replacing its products if you have an issue.

Yeah, if you care about DACs, get an actual DAC.

I mean.. there's "if you care about dacs"... and then there's "wtf? what is wrong with my ear buds?!?!?!?"

ok... I'm gonna stop you here. there is definitely NOTHING stupid about their taptic engine... it's 2017. We deserve better than 1991 pager buzzers. I firmly believe anyone who has ever dismissed apple's taptic feedback has never used one of the iphones or macbooks for more than a minute or two. anytime I hear the now engrained "pager buzz" on another phone I cringe. gross.

Yes, armchair engineering when all it takes is a pair of eyes. smdh

Keep on drinking that kool-aid.

If it's such an impossible task then why is it that most other manufacturers have been able to keep that 3.5mm jack and even surpass apple in terms of features available on their devices? The amount of sidestepping and goalpost moving from Apple apologists is amazing sometimes.

There not desgined the same? The current 7/+ design is different than anything else?

It's not goal post moving. It's comparing Apples to Apples. FFS some of you are dense.

and right here is what you are missing. NO WIRE. It really is a huge deal. "well they have a wire" simply doesn't cut it. When there are TRULY wireless ear buds that beat airpods.. then maybe we'll talk. but being able to take one out and set it down when someone comes over to talk.. being able to workout without something lying across the back of my neck or maybe getting caught.. etc.. truly wireless is a really big deal. Once you get there you never want another wired pair of buds again (including "wireless" ones with wires)

take a quick look at both boards inside the device and their layouts (on a component level) and tell me just how drastically different they are. Seriously, people need to actually check what these things look like on the inside before spouting off shit like this.

Uh, yes?

Makes more sense than "they removed the headphone jack for waterproofing and extra room" bullshit.

Selling dongles is a short-term thing. We need to look deeper. The corporate overlords play 3-D Chess.

This conspiracy bullshit is hard to read at times. Again, Apple provided a dongle in the box. I doubt they sold enough of them even show up on their bottomline over the past year. I'm sure a few people probably lost them, and have had to buy a few over that time. But Apple isn't raking in millions of dollars on dongle sales for the iPhone. (The MacBook on the other hand...)

I'm a recent AirPod buyer myself and absolutely love them. That isn't an excuse for Apple to get rid of the jack, just throwing in my two cents. I've been wireless with my headphones and earbuds for years, so this doesn't impact me at all. But it does suck for those who do prefer wired options. That said, GAF isn't a good indicator of the general public on these kinds of issues. I've never heard anyone complain about it in the real world, and it is mostly a non-issue heading into the announcement of the iPhone 7s/8/Edition. Especially as more companies adopt the same approach. The wireless revolution is here. Embrace it! ;)

Who the hell actually believed it was because of no space?

The people who constructed a strawman to use as a "gotcha".

Because I was curious about the OP's framing, I went back and watched the entire damn iPhone 7 keynote again. The rationale they give is that maintaining the space for a single-purpose legacy connector just doesn't make sense as people want more out of their phones, not "we can't fit it in the iPhone 7". When the mod in question does have to cut through the venting Apple added to maintain waterproofing, it also renders the argument moot. No, you can't add a headphone jack without changing anything in the design.

It doesn't charge and use headphones at the same time. He just crammed in a board and put an auto switch in. I get it, he showed you could put a 3.55 in but you could always shave it down to fit in a lot.

yeah it's the fucking worst

my htc 10 with a capacitive recessed home button/fingerprint scanner doesn't need some bullshit taptic engine to register taps

Guess you didn't watch the video

guess you didn't read my comment--they removed it because they couldn't fit the taptic engine in the /smaller/ iphone, not the bigger one modified in the video.

I mean.. there's "if you care about dacs"... and then there's "wtf? what is wrong with my ear buds?!?!?!?"

a. lolwut

b. the pixel managed to fit a linear actuator /and/ a headphone jack in one chasis. how? it's smaller because it's not trying to create vibration sensations for the home button to make it feel like a physical home button for... reasons. if it really needs to feel like it's clicking in why are they killing it altogether this year? can't fall back on the taptic engine to make it feel real because it still won't be recessed like it normally is.

Same here. I'm going to ride out my 6S+ until it's severely outdated. No headphone jack and I'll go somewhere else for a phone.

This is pretty cool, hopefully Apple takes heed of how full of shit they are.

Eh, I'd wait a bit. The functionality doesn't work the way people would want (listen and charge at the same time). He also crammed in a flex board which could cause issues with heating down the line.

Apple is selling a brand of thinner phones and a 3.55mm doesn't help with that brand. It's obvious it was going to get cut eventually. It all depends on if you want to support the brand or take an alternative with a 3.55mm.

I mean I don't even know what you are going on about. I don't even give a shit about room or why or whatever. Someone said the haptic feedback system was "stupid" and I was pointing out a the drastic improvement directed fine detail haptics provide over the same basic pager motors we;ve been subjected to for nearly 30 years now.

the pure irony is that the longer you guys hold out, the fewer phones the jack will be in.. ultimately you are just creating a worse case for yourself (fewer options when you do switch)..

a. what's wrong with "basic pager motors?" that's some real change for change's sake, especially since we can't miniaturize the replacement to a level that works for everything we want

b. what's stupid about it isn't the feel it creates (like whatever it's a vibration) it's the fact they made it larger so that when you press the home button, it feels like a physical home button. it's unnecessary and stupid, android phones have been able to do fine without needing to make their capacitive button feel like a physical button. if you forget about accomplishing that task, you can make the linear actuator smaller, like they did on the pixel. then you can have your cake and eat it too--your fancy taptic engine whatever and a headphone jack. having it be the way it is now is just a massive inefficient waste of space, for no goddamn reason other than to provide an excuse to justify all of that expensive R&D they made on linear actuators to make their macbook touchpads thinner.

I can already tell you that I probably won't think it's as big of a deal as you think it is. I actually think think the main upgrade for me has been able to walk around my apartment while listening to music and being free from being attached to my phone when I'm going around the city. I also like really have the magnets at the end so I can wear them like a neckless - I've lost so many in-ear headphones before leaving them somewhere when traveling. I'm never going to lose these. The exercise point you brought up seems like a really really weak one. I don't think it bothers most people as much as you think and it would be extremely for the wire to get "caught" on something.

I switched to Samsung from Apple over the exclusion and will stay until / if Samsung goes that route.

I have no clue how big the market of people like me is but considering how sleek the S8 line is Im hoping for at least one more generation with a jack.

After that Ill probably still stay away from Apple because I can buy USBC headsets that work across my laptops and phone.

maybe the phone shouldn't be so thin that it starts losing basic features :/

I've heard a lot of people complain about it in the real world. Seriously.

What's the complaint? You can't charge and listen at the same time? I suppose that's pretty valid, but with wireless charging all-but confirmed for the next iPhone, I suppose hat will become a moot point as well. The included dongle does make it easy to use your wired headphones with the iPhone 7 though.

How is it a moot point. You have to buy a wireless charger and place the phone on it to charge it which is not always convenient.

All I can say is when I finally changed phones this year, not having a mini-jack was a deal breaker.
It's kind of amazing how there's this trend, and then there are phones like the LG V30 doubling down on quality DACs and increasing number of dedicated USB DACs for use with smartphones for audiophiles.

they did this because one of their past phones had a really good DAC; when they removed it for the next flagship (the G5) they did it in such a way that you could get it back... if you paid them $100 (iirc) for a replacement "mod" that they didn't sell in the US and would refuse to boot if you tried to use it with a US phone. the backlash was severe and great, so they went back to putting it in the phone by default.
