World of Warships entering Closed Beta

So, if I were to jump into the game, after I unlock random matchmaking, I could theoretically use a ship of any tier?

May be some confusion between the two here.

Initially, you only have access to the ships like CTLance said. If you're buying in with a preorder, you'll also be given a special ship(s), that will belong to a tier you haven't gotten to yet. You can play these premium ships immediately.

Today I learned what it felt like to be lit on fire in four different places. Even an enemy player from over 10 kilometers away commented that I was "torched like Christmas." I heard a rather high-pitched alarm that I don't think I've ever heard before, but probably only arises when severely lit on fire....

And, for the record, the fire and smoke effects in this game look incredible! World of Warplanes is another game from this company that I recall having really good fire effects, when planes fall out of the sky.

I don't know if it's a real thing, but it seems like setting multiple fires actually requires hitting the other areas as well. I've started spreading my shots around on BBs for this reason. Could just be confirmation bias though.

I feel like this is probably true, given that the bottom left display actually shows you where each fire is located, If you get lit on fire at the stern, the fire icon appears over the stern, and if you're lit on fire somewhat aft of the ship's bow, the fire icon appears there. If you are on fire on both spots, the icon appears at both locations, but I have never seen two fires get stacked in the same location.

I just had a game where the Tier X Japan DD was maybe 2 km away, in smoke and firing his main gun like mad at me yet i could not see him. I'm sorry, but that's kinda bullshit.

Well, it makes sense in real-world terms: smoke screens are deliberately thick:

and even natural fogs can be thick enough to completely shroud two or three houses down, let alone over a mile in a deliberately designed smoke.

I've been in the same frustrating situation, and have been torn apart by deck gun fire from within it. The best ways to combat this are to 1) launch a spotter plane if you have one or, if it's on cool down, 2) keep an eye on where the fire is coming from and see if you can't try to guess at where you might be able to aim. Otherwise, there probably isn't any better option than to simply run away from the smoke screen and either lure the destroyer out of it to chase you or return later when their smoke screen is on cool down.

If I remember correctly, I think one of the developers or community people said a while back that destroyers in the real world never instantly shrouded themselves in their own smoke screen but instead required additional maneuvering in order to cover themselves, so they would look into making this true for World of Warships as well via smoke screen mechanic changes.

I did have a spotter plane, and even another teammate next to him. Smoke isn't a cloaking device, I just don't like the way they handle it.

My captain is 10k xp on 17k for leveling up. I can buy a new ship and transfer him.

Should I wait until he gets a new level (does XP get lost when going a new ship ?) or can I transfer him now ?

This game is incredibly difficult with an amazingly steep learning curve.

I love it so far. I can barely make out the skill ceiling because I'm getting shit on so hard. That's so refreshing.

The xp isn't lost. When you transfer him and start retraining you need to gain a certain amount of xp which will go towards retraining. I'm not sure if it's his entire current level or the experience he had remaining into that leve. Never paid attention really.

I did notice the odd HE citadel shot I scored against various targets. However the main issue with HE vs AP is the fact AP often does 0 damage while HE rarely does so.

I'm hoping the ignore armour fix results in more low damage or deflection of HE shells. Because the issue is now as you point out is that damage dealt by AP is inconsistent, which tends to make HE a no brainer as you're more likely to cause damage.

The reason AP was changed to do 0 damage on failed penetration is because before the most recent major update, AP was considered to be the no-brainer that some people regard HE as now.

I personally find that AP does quite a lot more than HE when you're close enough to the enemy ship to shoot straight into their sides, as long as the enemy ship isn't a destroyer, since that tends to cause overpenetration.

Yeah I know the issue now is that HE especially with fire is a no brainer with 3.1.

FWIW, I use HE 100% of the time in a DD. For anything else, I use HE if I feel like they have a reasonable chance of dodging my shells assuming I was aiming perfect. Once they're close enough that I'm going to hit them fairly easily, I go back to AP.

I've lost about 10 games in a row since I got on today. Always score in the top 3 of my team. For example, in a Fubuki(IJN T8 DD), I just took and/or held A on the ice map against a DD, BB, and 2 Cruisers(they showed up separately, so I never fought more than 3 at once). As far as I can tell, I only got some Dive Bomber support early in the fight. I eventually realize I'm not being assaulted anymore and head to B, only to notice 1/4 of my team has already died somehow. I still solo cap B against an enemy DD, and then go on to sink another BB before I die to Cruisers. We still manage to lose the match, despite me single-handedly capping and holding half the zones, and killing 1/3 of their team. Of course, 2 of our cruisers did find time to chase their CV across the map.

Here's my current player summary screen. My win percentage has dropped like 5% since the last big patch. Getting very frustrating.

I play DD 50% of the time, and Cruiser and BB 25% each as well.

After hitting a wall with IJN DDs I finally started my way up the US line. I find myself relying more and more on my guns and the japanese counterparts severely lack in that department.

That's how things should be. Later on you also get better Torpedo tubes than those paltry 4-5km ones that force you to go within secondary armament range of many big ships, but for the most part US DDs rely on gunning their opponents down anyway, so it's not a big annoyance.

I've said it before, the way I see it US DDs are more or less a hard counter to their IJN counterparts. Can't outrun, can't outrange, can't outmanoeuvre. Better hope you have some smoke and Torps ready.

woo after finally playing through all my ships I built up 100k in free experience. Saving up for the German tree

So what's everyone's favorite ship so far?

I have to admit, I'm really enjoying the US Destroyers, though I've only made it to tier VI.

I'd say Battleships are my least favorite so far, it's like an AWP in counterstrike. Haven't dipped into the Carriers yet.

Any DD when I'm not in a division. I've learned the other ships require teamwork to some degree, and that's sorely lacking.

2 BBs and 2 Cruisers moving up, but oh no, we saw 1 enemy BB. Everyone better retreat to maximum range so we can spend 10 minutes killing him!

This is sort what I mean. I just wrecked people in a center cap for like 10 minutes, and then we still nearly lost after I finally died and our nearest people were pretty far away.

That's confederate and high caliber medals.

You better hope that tree hits before open beta, because they wipe for the last time when they go from closed to open beta. Additionally, the first German ship is going to be a premium vessel, since the first vehicle of any new nation in the three games is always a single premium vehicle to give you an early glimpse of the general traits of the upcoming nation.

I've lost count now how many games in a row I just sink doing jack shit to them, must be over 15-20 now.

Trying to sneak up on them as a destroyer, they just suddenly know where I am and fire a full barrage instantly sinking me.
Trying to play as a cruiser, always getting blown up by a battleship who tanks all my damage/a cruiser who keeps hitting me no matter what I do.
Trying to play as a battleship, always gets OUT TANKED by a cruiser who somehow never is critically damaged by my shells and does overall tons more damage than I can ever inflict.
Not into carriers at all.

And it went so well in lower tiers at times, now its just all going to shit every time.

Also whatahell is the purpose of the tier V japanese Furutaka cruiser? Its torpedos has a range of "I can spit further", its AA capabilities are crap and its guns are so awkward and slow they barely do damage the times they actually get to fire. Every round with it goes horribly wrong. I swear this ship is my USS William D. Porter. It is probably cursed.

Edit: And then out of nowhere a round where I sink 4 ships in my Cleveland and survive to the end. This game is like a very extreme rollercoaster at times.

There's not enough people playing the game to get consistently well placed from a MMR standpoint. So one game you will be against much better players, then against scrubs the next.

Given that the game is incredibly team dependent, this has an even larger impact.

Seeing this thread has made me interested in this game.

Is it worth it to spend the money to get into the closed beta?

I think so. Buy the cheapo Yubari, and give it a go. You'll get all the premium time and gold back once open beta starts so it's like a 2 for 1 deal.

Also I still only have RMS on my friends list, I need more people to play with, I have a Tier X US cruiser and just got the Iowa so i'm looking to gang up and kill people lol.

I've had no regrets buying in. People seem to think open beta is coming soon, but I have no idea about that.

Thanks, you've convinced me. Wasn't that hard really

Tried to purchase that ship you mentioned but get told that there was a problem and to try again later.
See how I go then

On a good roll again, had a nice destroyer round getting some really sweet hits on some poor battleships that were turning around a corner and got a explosive surprise.

Still can't figure out this Furutaka cruiser though, it just feels so awkward to control.

Oh sweet... I just got an email from IT announcing that World of Warship was now unlocked on the company firewall haha.

Time to install it here it too!

You have the Des Moines? I have a Yamato! Aw man, we could totally wreck everything between your sheer DPM and my sheer alpha damage and penetration! Not to mention our combined AA ability!

I've never played that thing, because I passed it by the time it was added to the game, and I generally don't play new ships if they're lower-tier than the ships I own. If I knew anything about that ship, I would share it, but the disadvantages you cited are generally things I rely upon (torpedo range, for example).

Playing the same game on your work PC as you do on your home PC is the greatest thing.

I think the problem is that it is the first one to play like a IJN heavy cruiser, it's a big shock coming off the large destroyer gameplay of the Kuma. Because of it's slow turrets you need to start thinking about where your turrets are when you engage so then can shoot as opposed to missing a shot because the turrets are still traversing. You need to start angling the ship to minimise in coming damage.

Once you learn it you're pretty much setup for the rest of the IJN cruiser line, as they all play fairly similar but with Higher ROF and/or higher turret traverse and longer range torpedoes. The Aoba is a straight upgrade in so many ways and what the Furutaka was upgraded to prior to the war so you'll have more room for risk taking..

Add me mate : Bastable

still working on getting tier 9 and 10 CA's though.

So I tried again to purchase a ship and beta access and still it won't let me
Tried with different browser and different payment methods.

I think my highest Tier right now is VII, but I'm working on Destroyers primarily with Cruisers when I die early. Add me, and I'll join you guys once I get to IX level.

Michalius I think is my IGN.

The vast majority of my ships right now are Tier VII-VIIIs, in fact! I have either a Tier VII or a Tier VIII in absolutely every branch in the game aside from the battleships (X for Japan, VI for the US) and Japanese aircraft carriers (Tier V)
Send help, this game has trapped me
. My in-game name is RMS_Gigantic. I added you, assuming you remembered correctly and are on the North American server.

Do any of you use Skype when you're partnering up? That's been my only issue with divisions. Hard to organize with just the chat.

I have a IX Kagero, VII IJN BB, VIII IJN Cruiser, VII USN Cruiser(I hate Pensacola), VII USN DD, and VII USN BB. Plus various lower level ships I keep around.

What skils do you use for each tier and each ship type ?

I have 4 points to spend on the the Mahan (Tier 7 US Destroyer) I wonder If I should take Pyromania (+5% chance of fire on target) or Vigilance (+20% torpedoes acquisition range)

I wonder the same for Battleship and Heavy cruiser. Advanced Firing Training seems a good choice for both : +20% to secondary armament attack distance & + 20% AA engagement area radius
