World of Warships entering Closed Beta

What skils do you use for each tier and each ship type ?

I have 4 points to spend on the the Mahan (Tier 7 US Destroyer) I wonder If I should take Pyromania (+5% chance of fire on target) or Vigilance (+20% torpedoes acquisition range)

I wonder the same for Battleship and Heavy cruiser. Advanced Firing Training seems a good choice for both : +20% to secondary armament attack distance & + 20% AA engagement area radius

As of right now, take that pyro and light people on fire.

Australia.
I'm thinking it might be my CC blocking the payment but as I also can't pay via Paypal I'm not so sure.
If I try to pay via paypal using the CC would it still block it?

If you're using Wargaming's Southeast Asian server and website, which I think is the closest to Australia, then I don't know what their customer support reputation is like, though I know the North American counterpart is very good, so you might want to try submitting a ticket with them.

Do any of you use Skype when you're partnering up? That's been my only issue with divisions. Hard to organize with just the chat.

I have a IX Kagero, VII IJN BB, VIII IJN Cruiser, VII USN Cruiser(I hate Pensacola), VII USN DD, and VII USN BB. Plus various lower level ships I keep around.
I have a Mumble server, and there's also the GAF Mumble server.

Skype is bad, way too much latency.

game sounds interesting, how do I get into the beta?

You have to buy one of the pre order packs.

They give one premium ship, some tokens and some premium time.

You can use the beta token currency now and it will all get converted over at launch.

(There is also aTriple pack with all three ships)

If you have no money to spend, you can also wait until open beta, which will be free, with the added benefit of not having a progress wipe before release. The downside is we don't know when this phase will arrive.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I finally managed to get the game through PP. Downloading it now so I'll see if I get some time later to play

Managed to play a few battles and sink a couple of ships though I have no idea really what I'm doing.
I don't mind the game but I don't understand the coins and stuff you get at the end of the battle - what does everyone do with those?

The ship exp is used to unlock upgrades on your ship and to research the next ship in your line. The coins you get are to buy said upgrades/ships.

Two people in a group with two fucking Yamatos should be forced to stay in match searching until the game finds one round with other two Yamatos. Goddamn that was the most unfair fight ever.

Thanks.

I see now. Stars are assigned to the ships you won them in and you upgrade in that ship class with those stars earnt.

The coins are across all ships.

Thanks.

The coins are across all ships.

Stars are experience points, coins are credits.

You might notice that there are two different colors for the stars, one of which is in the upper right hand corner of your screen and remain constant regardless of what ship you are looking at in the port. These are "free experience." Every battle you have, you get 1 free experience point for every 20 experience points (regular experience being the ship-specific one, whereas free experience is shared across all ships) That is, you get an amount equal to 5% of the experience points from a battle added to free experience.

To obtain a new module (guns, fire control, hull, engine, torpedo, aircraft, etc.), you need to first research it (that is, use experience to unlock it) and then purchase it (that is, use credits to actually put it onto your ship) Alternatively, you can save up your credits while still progressing by simply using experience to unlock a module and then directly researching the next module after that. That is to say, you do have to research a module in order to research the next module in line, but you don't need to buy a module to research the next one in line. Put briefly, you progress through the tech trees by unlocking things, not by buying them (though buying them usually makes your ship stronger or specialize in a different way, so it's still generally worthwhile to buy the modules, too).

I hope this clarifies progression a bit more!

Mogami, upgrade guns from 155 to 203mm, yay or nay ?

Pros :
- more damage
- better turn rate of the turrets

Cons :
- slower rate of fire (15 secs reload instead of 10, 4 shots per minute instead of 6)
- One less barrel per turret, that 10 guns instead of 15. Sure, I get BIGGER guns, but I loose 5 of them...

Not sure if the trade is really worth it ?

In the current state of the game 155mms HE spam wins all day every day.

sure !

yeah, I even want to take the 4 points skill to get 5% more chances of lighting fires.

I didn't really get a lot of photos because the school thing was kinda lame lol. They sat in a classroom learning about circuits and magnets and we got a quick tour of the Galley. No idea why they bothered coming here if they didn't really learn about the ship, oh well i'll go again on my own time.

Had to take this one on the run, the note didn't like it lol.

I prefer the secondaries upgrade. It surprises the hell out of cocky DDs when suddenly all your guns open up on them while they think they're still in the "safe" zone. Granted it's less of a priority for cruisers.

Someone look at the flags on the first pic and tell us what medals it got

One of the halyards separately features the India and Yankee flags, but another flag is in between them. For what it's worth, India Yankee is offered as a reward for the Fireproof medal in-game (for surviving having the equivalent of at leasst half of your ship's combat capability consumed by fire).

There aren't even that many signal flags in the game currently let alone that many combinations. I would be all for having a vast library of available signal flag combinations, though!

Edit: Despite the ship not being in the tech tree yet, I just saw a Taiho (Tier IX Japanese aircraft carrier) in the wild on the enemy team....
Edit 2: Learned that the ship was randomly distributed to NA players, and given to high-end aircraft carrier players on the EU server, which is why I encountered it.

I ran into that the other day myself. IJN Carriers only go to Tier VIII, right? I was playing with a friend and we were both very confused.

Enjoying this game but the key for me is to keep progressing - it's no fun getting blasted out of the water every 2 seconds.
Just on that - the South Carolina is a rubbish boat. Slow, slow to turn and slow to aim.

Just a couple of questions though

How do I sell boats?
Do the commanders/captains go with them?

What do the numbers mean next to the names on the team members screen before a battle?

Why is it soooo slow to get stars? I feel it's too slow and hampers upgrades and new ships thus limiting fun

What happens at the end of beta? Do I get reset to the beginning and lose all my ships and commanders/captains?

Right click the boat while in port -> Sell. You get to choose what to do with the commander on the screen that pops up. You also get to choose what to do with the upgrades you installed : be warned, by default the game removes them from the ship so you can install them elsewhere, this costs gold.

The numbers indicate those people are part of a squad, basically groups of friends queuing together.

It's slow because Wargaming wants you to buy premium time so you can level your ships faster.

At the end of Beta all progress, money and xp are wiped. The only thing we get to keep are the premium ships we've preordered, even those bought ingame are gone. All gold and premium time spent is reimbursed.

Thanks for the reply

So basically anything I do in beta won't carry on. I'll try a few things out

Added.

The vast majority of my ships right now are Tier VII-VIIIs, in fact! I have either a Tier VII or a Tier VIII in absolutely every branch in the game aside from the battleships (X for Japan, VI for the US) and Japanese aircraft carriers (Tier V)
Send help, this game has trapped me
. My in-game name is RMS_Gigantic. I added you, assuming you remembered correctly and are on the North American server.

Missed this as I've been suffering a awful flu.
I'll add you tonight as I'm on the US server too.

So, they have come out into the open about the CBT to OBT switch technicalities and the rewards. Big surprise, it'll be a ship! ...also some captains and consumables.

At the end of Closed Beta phase, a wipe of your in-game progress will take place to create fair conditions for everyone who will join after the start of Open Beta. However, there are significant benefits to those who have participated actively in the testing and apart from the Tier IV US battleship Arkansas, these are the following benefits of your labour to reap:

  • Account level and signal flags will be given to you based on the number of battles done.
  • You will also find two free commanders with unlocked skill points awaiting you on the American and Japanese tier I ships. The amount of available skill points is based on your participation. Bear in mind that you won’t see them before unlocking Account Level 4 after the wipe.

Prerequisite for the goodies is that you have to have had 50 "battles" - they do not specify whether this includes CoOp PvE battles. Also, no date was given, but they claim to give us enough time and ample warning before flipping the switch.

Ship:

USS Arkansas is one of the brightest examples of U.S. battleships. While having relatively a low speed of travel and firing range, Arkansas is characterized by good manoeuvrability, well-armoured citadel, and anti-torpedo defense system. She is equipped with anti-aircraft armaments and multiple primary guns.
I smell preemptive damage control. A slow as fuck but tanky Brawler Battleship, hooray. What a novelty. ;)

Oh well, free stuff is free stuff, not complaining.
To me, the Alpha reward ship looks better, though. I will freely admit that I'm slightly envious.

A forum thread had a community manager clarify that the 49 battle requirement is for PvP battles, not PvE.

If World of Tanks/Warplanes precedent is anything to go by, the Arkansas is essentially a premium Tier IV battleship. This should be kept in mind because as far as battling goes, she's a Wyoming class battleship, which presumably means that they will give the Arkansas a historically accurate, middle-of-the-road armament compared to a Wyoming, stronger than stock but weaker than elite.

Thanks for the clarification.

(This is gonna sound incredibly selfish and entitled, but I'd have preferred a CV because I don't like the RNG based core game of BS's.

Also a neon green Unicorn camouflage pattern. Bitches love Unicorns.)

Looks good, a "free" Battleship is a free battleship.

I would have personally preferred everyone get's free Takeo's/Tone's or Wichita's but that's my Cruiser bias showing. free ship's/docks are all good.

More importantly vet captains :)

I'm bringing this thread back from the depths

So World of Warships Beta Access is one of the redeemable keys from the Humble E3 Bundle thing.

For current players, it might be worth it to pick up a E3 Bundle. There's a separate bonus code for 1,000 code, 7 days premium, and the Murmansk.

I have the Murmansk and I love that beast. It's got guns facing every direction conceivable, 8K triple torpedo tube on each side with a better firing angle than most actual DDs, and pretty solid AA for it's tier. I can basically maneuver like a mad person while guaranteeing that at least half my guns are on target at all times, and while launching torpedos pretty often. It's guns have pretty good range too. It's like a Cleveland with torpedos.

Was just gonna post this. It's a great deal. Any idea if the bonus code will be active still when the game moves into open beta? IIRC they're wiping stats right?

~~~
Just found this on Reddit in case anyone asks the same question:
Once close beta is over, all your stats and progress are reset to 0. All premium shop bought ships are added to your port and all purchased premium currency and time will be added to your account (This means you are free to use all premium currency in the beta, as you'll get them back when the game goes live.).
Won't use them, bought the bundle for other stuff.
Expect Open Beta to arrive very very soon. SO if you need to get those battles in for the free battleship better get started
Yeah, that kinda clashes with their earlier claim we would get ample forewarning before the wipe. oh well.
// I probably jumped the gun with the following. Read the update yourself, or scoll down a bit to my follow up //
The first public test client is available... for closed beta testers at first. This weird closed open test will be this weekend (19th/20th).
Closed beta testers may check that client out if they log in using the open beta client using their CBT login - YOU ARE ADVISED TO INSTALL THE OPEN BETA TEST CLIENT INTO A DIFFERENT DIRECTORY.
Regardless, you will be given a bit of premium currency to go hogwild on those sweet-ass premium ships.
Oh, and the test client has patch 0.4.0 which comes with significant changes, mostly to skills and consumables. There's also a new high tier map and a compliment/complaint system in the after battle report. What could possibly go wrong with that?
I've been mulling the update... I think I have jumped the gun.
The "Public Test" is probably about the 0.4.0 patch - not the general open beta. It's safe to assume that the true open beta would be launched with much more PR. Got my wires crossed somewhere while reading the update.
So, yeah, sorry about that. I guess we still have some more time to amass useless skillpoints and flags. ;)
One point still stands though - if you wanna testdrive the 0.4.0 patch, you have to play this weekend, using the test client.
Here's a quick rundown:
Consumables
Consumables are kind of becoming like Upgrades now - you get four slots and can fit a range of items into them. Cruisers get the best selection. Reconnaissance planes have been split into Spotting Aircraft and Fighters, the former being mostly BS exclusive and extending their turret and binocular range, while the Fighter will attack approaching enemy planes, causing the disruption of Torp/Bomb spread while also spotting enemies. They do pitiful damage though. DDs get an Engine Boost item that increases speed and de-/acceleration, and Cruisers will get Hydroacoustic Search, which negates fog and raises Torp and ship detection ranges for a while.
Camouflage
Well, it's what it says on the tin. It's a "removable single-use consumable", whatever that means. Increases concealment, and enemies firing at the ship have slightly reduced accuracy. Still very much in testing stage, although more patterns etc are planned.
Commander Skills revamp
Seven new skills. Aerial Reconnaissance has been removed, and the ship-specific Smoke Screen, Defensive Fire, and Repair Work have been replaced by Superintendant (which allows more activations of all consumables). Skills have been shuffled around the tree (Situation Awareness is now tier 1, Fire Prevention tier 2, etc - High Alert rises to tier 3 though).
New skills:
  • Expert Loader (Level 1)—reduces the time required for the Main Battery to switch from high-explosive to armor-piercing shells and vice versa, when all guns have been loaded.
  • Expert Rear Gunner (Level 1)—enhances the performance of the rear gunner, available in some aircraft.
  • Incoming Fire Alert (Level 2)—turns on the alert indicator when an enemy Main Battery has fired a shot at you from a long range.
  • Manual Control (Level 2)—enables a player to manually specify an attack area for carrier-borne attack squadrons.
  • Last Stand (Level 4)—when the engine room and steering gear receive critical damage, they continue to operate with reduced performance.
  • Last Chance (Level 5)—decreases reload time of all armament and squadrons, when few combat capability options are left.
  • Preventive Maintenance (Level 5)—scales down the risk of critical damage to all main modules (engine room, steering gear, main battery, and torpedo tubes).
New Map
Called Two Brothers, two big islands resembling the northwestern coastal waters of the UK. Tiers VI–X, Standard Battle and Domination.
Premium Ships
Several will be added, but only one has been mentioned: Tier II Japanese BS Mikasa (high accuracy and HE damage, impressive secondary armament, poor range and speed, bad AP damage).
Interface changes
Notifications center - retain battle reports per login session
Tooltips - hover over shells etc while in battle will open a small popup
Compliments and Reports
on the Battle overview screen (Tab/after battle) you can send feedback on your team members and opponents using predefined phrases (e.g. complaint about teamkillers, commendations for especially useful contributions). Might still be tweaked into a simopler like/dislike feature.
Sound Tweaks
They're hard at work revamping the sound engine, leading to better performance and engine sounds of planes/ships among other things.
That cruiser skill... sonofabitch. AGAINST! D:
I've not played for a while thanks to TW3. The patches that have been released then leave me with a lot to get used to. As I'm experiencing it, AP rounds are now only useful when at range where the high angle of fire causes them to come down on to the deck?
Anyway in the current build the Atlanta has become my favourite ship. I've found my calling....protecting idiot BS players who can't avoid torpedos. That is ruining bomber squadrons and shredding destroyers.
Anybody else getting occasional terrible performance problems with the test client? It's probably all the telemetry and logging they've added, but I get distinct 6-30fps spikes with audio distortions when I'm used to a rock stable 60 with the standard beta client. Yikes.
Beta access ship packages did not seem to carry over to the test realm, and there were no new Premium ships in the tech tree. I did get my ass handed back to me by a beta reward ship (USS Arkansas beta) though - IIRC with a Russian at the helm. Yes, the Test Server is international.
That 30x earnings multiplier. I could get used to that. :D
Anyway.
So, 0.4.0 clarification time.
The four slots are really only two slots since two are fixed-use for HE/AP ammo (and there's an additional fixed one for Torps). Also, there's now Premium non-ammo consumables with better performance (33% better cooldown, around 25 tokens per refill). Maybe there are ships that allow you to discard either AP or HE ammo for more consumable slots, but I haven't encountered them.
The camo will be used up after battle, so that's what they meant with "removable single-use consumable". Costs about 12k per match, so you better be good or be puttering around in Premium ships. Two are available, one for stealth (-3% detectability), one with an enemy accuracy modifier (-4%).
Despite transforming my ship into some sort of washed out Zebra I can't say the latter helped much. :'(
Camo is only unlocked at profile tier 8.
Dunno what else is different or hasn't been mentioned yet.
Oh yeah.... the Atlanta is nuts. I shall save up to get that cheat of a ship as soon as possible. Holy crap. It's like playing a cookie clicker, only with ships.
I just had the strangest thing happen.
I'm rounding an island to launch torpedoes on a ship.
I see another ship with him who has run aground.
Both ships launch a spread at me.
I avoid the first 8.
I avoid the second wave like a pro.
Suddenly behind the second wave are another 30 torpedoes that have appeared from nowhere. No aircraft in sight.
I died.
What strikes me most about the upcoming update's test is that they've started to incorporate the consumables and other things, and there are fewer "gold" things in World of Warships than in the other two games, and those "gold" things affect the game noticeably less than they do in the other two games. For example, World of Tanks and World of Warplanes are rather notorious for armor-penetrating composite rounds, high-explosive squash head rounds, and other "gold" ammo, but World of Warships doesn't have that even as we see other items that can be bought for gold.
In terms of gold consumables, unlike how automatic fire extinguishers in World of Tanks and World of Warplanes put the fire out without player input whereas the default consumable requires the player to use a key, the only thing that separates the gold and regular cosumables that I have seen is that the gold consumables (which are also affordable if using in-game credits as well, even more so with signal flags for boosting credit income and reducing repair costs) simply somewhat reduce the cool down time of the consumables while otherwise being identical.
Lastly, there is camouflage, which I can't even remember if obtaining them with gold is an option because, if gold is indeed an option, then the credit option is actually the default one. In World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, credits you could say "rent" camouflage schemes for 7 days or a month, while gold repaints the vehicle permanently. In World of Warships, camouflage is a per-battle thing either way.
This seems like a game built from the ground-up with the knowledge in mind that the three games of this series are such moneymaking powerhouses for Wargaming that the company can afford to reduce the prominence and effects of gold in the game. World of Tanks started this a little by making options that were previously limited only to gold or premium accounts available for credits and free accounts respectively ("gold" consumables and "gold" ammo for the former, three-person platoons for the latter), but that's a sort of "conversion," whereas World of Warships is, like I said, pretty much built from the ground-up to be, I guess you could say "freer."
One last thing about camouflage, too: I like how they can work in two different ways. In World of Tanks and World of Warplanes, camo just reduces your detectability, while in World of Warships one camo has that option while the other makes guns that fire at it less accurate, which makes it behave fairly similar to real-life dazzle camouflage.
No there does not seem to be any gold payment for camp in the 4.0 test. Odd I did not notice the discrepency at the time of slathering it all over my test Mogami.
Good observations, it does seem like they're softening on the price gouging aspect of their model. We'll see though when they go live :).
I'm already sure I'm going to buy the Atago though.
