One of the worst things is when you fart in your car or room, and you crack a window. You get used to the smell but sometimes it lingers and you forget about it. Someone walks in or gets in your car and they have this pained expression on their face.

Farts vary a lot. They can be barely noticeable, or they can cause your eyes to bleed and force you to rush out of a room at undignified speeds.

If we're going by peak stench, I'd have to vote for farts. Cigarettes are consistently bad, but farts can be more devastating in the short-term.

I'd go with cigarettes being worse mostly because of the connotation. Farts are gross, but they're almost always funny. If someone farts, it's usually funny, because everybody farts, and while it's a horrible smell, it goes away pretty quickly and it's something to laugh about. Few people smell cigarettes and think it's funny, and the smell lingers for an eternity.

Isn't cancer from second-hand smoking not really a proven thing, with most studies being based off one that's been discredited multiple times?

For one, no, it's real. But the dangers of second hand smoke aren't just cancer, but many other breathing conditions like asthma and emphysema.

As much as I hate it when people smoke around me, I have nostalgia for the smell of lingering cigarette smoke. My dad used to smoke in his home office when I was a kid and that is where I played most of my old video games. I still remember the day the whole family sat in that cigarette smell filled room and watched my dad unpack his brand new Sony Vaio. So many good memories playing Jedi Knight and 3D Movie Maker in that room.
