Worst Character in a JRPG

For a majority of the game Luke from Tales of the Abyss is pretty annoying.

Luke was pretty terrible to deal with, but I hated how almost the entire cast treated him. For someone who's been sheltered their entire life and had to go through what he did, they certainly seem to not care or take that into consideration. I found myself only having to agree with some of his views/actions if you take his life into account, but all the cast did was just berate him without actually explaining anything to him.

Actually, the entire cast are just extremely insensitive and cold to each other.

Perhaps not the worst but the tutorial characters in the Mario and Luigi games are amongst the most annoying, that said I did like that Bowser's irritation with Chippy echoed my own thoughts.

As many people are saying they hate pre-teen characters I feel the need to mention Nanako as the exception to the rule.

If the story actually had the rest of the cast realize this, it would've been sort of okay, but instead the game has a lategame sidequest where Jade doubles down on his reaction to what Luke did. Complete with what I remember to be a really shitty allegory concerning one of Jade's acolytes.

I thought Guy was pretty good to Luke and was a lot more understanding of him.
Squall.

The guy is emo beyond emo that he makes Cloud look like the happiest guy in the world. His love story is a joke and what really annoyed the hell out of me in FFVIII was how he hands Rinoa over to the enemy without a fight. Let's her go just like that.

Then not five seconds later he says he misses her and wants to rescue her.

There was nothing redeeming about the guy yet for some reason despite his catch phrase being "whatever" everyone loves or adores him. Even the teacher on your party.

Whatever.
Please. I don't recall Squall saying he doesn't give a shit about the planet or if it dies.

As for letting Rinoa go, he's conflicted and even questions himself before she leaves. He tells her not to go but Rinoa says she has to and so Squall thinks he's making the right decision by allowing Rinoa to choose. I liked the fact he made a mistake and had the others show him what he had done wrong.

If Rinoa had said she didn't want to be taken away, that scene would have gone very differently but because she was agreeing, Squall didn't know how to react.

There's plenty redeeming about him and the only one who is questionable in liking him is Quistis because its inappropriate and unprofessional. Selphie's first meeting with Squall goes fairly well, Zell basically just thinks Squall's cool and Irvine remembers who he is. Rinoa doesn't even like him that much when they finally meet properly.

She was just plain rude to Swaine at every chance she had to speak to him. Swaine doesn't even do or say anything wrong or questionable or do anything to provoke her, but this stupid, stupid girl always responded to him in a rude, snap-back tone. Absolutely disliked her lack of respect to him and how much she clearly wanted to bed Oliver, as disturbing as it all sounds. She is a terrible character and I hope she is not in a sequel, or if she is, changes into a better, more likeable and less rude character. For now, she is a stupid, disrespectful little girl, ugh.

Swaine steals your shit the first time you meet him. She's holding a grudge and doesn't let it go.

There's usually one or two characters per Tales game that probably deserve a mention in this thread. Some pretty fierce competition, since the Tales series specialises in many facets of badness. Either by being annoying, exceptionally stupid, whiny, utterly boring, useless and/or being solely existing for creepy fanservice. I think the current "winner" is either Colette, but it's hard to say at this point. Her gimmicks are to always apologise all the time, constantly falling over and being reserved. I could clearly tell many of her scenes were supposed to be funny and endearing, but they did nothing more than to annoy the hell out of me. The cherry on the cake is that she is basically the same character as Yuna, another character I think is extremely stupid and lame, but somehow made worse.

A special mention goes to Mrs Mowz from Paper Mario 2, not because she's "the worst" per se, but every time she appeared, her theme song would play. That thing gave me instant tinnitus and made me never want to be around that character.

::edit::
Oh lord, I made sure to post before reading the other suggestions, so they wouldn't influence my decision. My mind must have completely blocked off Star Ocean 4. That game's characters border on parody.

The characters are exactly the reason why I just don't have the energy in playing Tales of the Abyss after finishing it for the 1st time. That, and the game's tendency to throw all those babbling terminology to the player in order to make it appear like the story is deep or sophisticated or whatever while the truth is it is just nonsense (Jade is the worst offender of the bunch for this.)

Also, Luke the 2nd version <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Luke the 1st version. At least Luke the 1st version is refreshing, while the 2nd version is nothing more than just a babbling emo stereotypical JRPG cliched hero that I want to punch on every turn.

Why not? Kuja's awesome.

I suppose I should have mentioned that I was mainly referring to his character design. I understand what his character is supposed to represent in the context of the story, but I just didn't care much at all for his aesthetic. I found it to be more distracting than anything.

Worst characters in a jrpg

Vanille -Serah

Even though i love the battle system in both games these 2 characters were so annoying that i had to skip every cutscene in which they were involved
I hope FF XV will feature some decent female characters

I feel like most of the people here have barely played any JRPGs if a lot of what's here is considered bad.

I wouldn't say that, personal preferences are exactly that after all.

I've played crazy amounts of JRPGs, but Shion and Fiora still stand out when I think if characters that I just simply hate so very much.

I think I forgot the kids from Lost Odyssey. Fuck them goddamn it.

From a pure gameplay standpoint, Kimahri from FFX. He's useful up to like Luca, then takes a backseat to the rest of the party due to his terrible stat growth and useless ability.

The best cast in Tales ever, the best story too. Second paragraph made me laugh. So, you prefer when characters don't change, inspite of what is happening around them and with them? c'mon!

I hated Anise especially compared to Luke. I wanted to really kill Arietta though.

As long as you're willing to take the time to steal, taking him to the start of Rikku's grid then passing through the Level 2 gate to Yuna's section makes him pretty useful.

I'm talking about his section of the Sphere Grid, because otherwise all the characters would pretty much be identical if you finish the entire Sphere Grid with each character.

In my last playthrough, I actually did have him learn Steal and learn white/black magic, but it seemed so redundant since I had characters who already completed their parts of the grid and proved to be far more useful in battle. I only did it so that he wasn't totally useless.

I just don't like
whimpering-suicidal-emo-defend-anything-anyone-everything the 2nd Luke became.
It is so stereotypical JRPG protagonist. At least the 1st Luke is a refreshing take on the whole cliche.

Also, let's just agree to disagree about the "best cast in Tales ever", especially the "best story." To the best cast, that honor goes to Tales of Vesperia, where in my opinion all the main cast are not even half as insufferable as Abyss' cast members (in fact, they are plenty likable)

One example of stupidity of Abyss' cast:
the decision from the cast to quickly forgave Anise even though they mercilessly lambasted Luke after he's being used by Van (and better yet, Anise even took part of that!)

As for the story, IMO it is just one of those occasions when a game throws so many "sophisticated" words at you like fenon this and fenon that and replica this and replica that to make it sound so "smart" and "complicated" when it's actually anything but. Also Abyss suffers from so many stretching problems it would make an Olympian gymnist squirm.

Luke doesn't change, he goes from a stereotype to another insufferable stereotyp:"I have to help everyone! I have to redeem myself! Evil is bad Love is good!"
For the love of god shut up Luke. There's no growing, it's a 180° change because the writers can't write.

It's clear that most of the people here doesn't play many JRPGs, as for me it's easy to determine the worst characters: any shitty anime trope characters are the worst, which is basically 90% of JRPGs characters.

I think the cat character from SO4 (forgot her name...) was the worse. I played the international version of SO4, so I never heard Lymle say "'kay". She's annoying as hell, but I don't hate her as most of gaf does.

Asbel from Tales of Graces was pretty bad too. That friendship cliche thing got on my nervers.

I hate Riki in Xenoblade.

Annoying voice, "Heropon this, Heropon that" shut up already, small fatty monster trying to be cute & funny (and failing most of the time) in a party made of humans. He sucks.

Don't get me wrong
I'd take real Luke instead of copy any day, I even tried in infamous duel. We all know how that works out (><)
But you are saying it's wrong that spoiled brat goes moody and whiny after being kicked by reality couple of times?! Really? That's ridiculous!
Anise is worst, ya.
She is forgiven because she's just a kid and because of parents though
Still the best cast, and best story. I won't even ask what's better in cast of ToV, because I know the answer.
I don't get what couple of terms have to do with all this. It's not rocked science fgs.

You are entitled to your opinion like everybody else, change is change however you spin that. And it's not uncommon post traumatic behavior, such a change, just reminding.

You really wanna go there? Really? What if I played more JRPGs than you. You'll take your words back?
And lemme ask you, where it leaves you if you play games where 90% characters are shitty characters. Shitty taste much?

For the first few hours, you think these two are going to be great. You probably think the game is going to be great. You turn out to be wrong.

For the first few hours, you get to hang out with yuki's awesome hot mom. Then you're left alone with the blonde elf and it's like "shit, this is going to be a long adventure."

Anyone who posts Zidane in this thread is a person whose opinion I cannot take seriously anymore.

Seriously. There are opinions, and then there's just being wrong. Out of all the JRPG characters, you bypass everything including XIII and SO4, and land on Zidane?

Ridiculous...

I haven't played a jrpg in 5 years, but I can't imagine any character being worse than the stereotyped gay guy from Enchanted Arms.

I think english voice acting is one of the biggest detriments to jrpgs. Like would the fanbase even care if the game had english voice acting? throw subtitles at us and i bet 90% of the people would still buy the game, i'll even say that 90% of people would prefer the game with japanese audio too. Seems like a waste of money to go after that 10% that do want english voices.

Bad characters are usually bad in both languages.

Anyone who has played Star Ocean 4 knows that whole cast is a disaster. Plastic graphics engine, horrendous dialogue, awkward voice acting, etc. I could go on. Combat was fun but I wanted to skip every cutscene. Lymle and Sarah are truly cringe-worthy.

FFXIII's characters were bad especially Snow, Serah, and Vanille. Hope kind of redeems himself in X-2.

Vaan was not that bad. I just thought of him as kind of the narrator of XII. He doesn't really get in the way and you're not forced to have him as your party leader for most of the game.

Yeah. You essentially get dumped and never see them again. One of Grandia 3's big storyline problems.

Amazing battle system though. But man what a shit story.

I didn't and never said that it's "wrong." I just simply don't like whiny, whimpering, suicidal, emo character like the 2nd Luke (not the
real Luke, the 2nd Luke means the short-haired version.
) At least the bratty 1st Luke version is a fresh take as a JRPG lead.

Oh, and that reasoning for Anise? Ridiculous, considering how much kick ass/strong the party is at that point and Anise is traveling together with a military genius and the leader of a powerful group that she can personally just ask for help. It's forced reasoning.

Anyways, maybe someday I'll replay TOtA, though the thought of hearing Yuri Lowenthal screaming REPLICAAAAAAAAAAAAA 24 hours a day is not something I am looking forward to, hahaha. And also, TOV's cast kick TOtA's cast so hard it's not even funny.... hmmm... maybe I'll reply TOV instead.
