Would you be okay with Disney buying Ghibli?

Or get some cross-company synergy up in this here bitch. Spirited Away on Tatooine, Ponyo and the cliff by the Muppet Studios, Deadpool Rosseau.

Until now, because they're making Wreck it Ralph 2 and there's Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo, Monster Inc....Planes.

There have been no announcements or even credible rumors of a Wreck-It Ralph 2. Many of the principals have said they'd love to make another, but that's the extent of the talk of it. Everything else you named is either Pixar (who has a history of doing sequels when they want to) or Disney Toon.
 
I rather Ghibli just end on its current good note. So I would feel conflicted if Disney bought the company and forced movies out of it.
 
no. ghibli only means something in what its films stand for and disney would try and strip as much culturally and philosophically distinct stuff out. better to end on their own terms than be gutted.

in a fantasy world where disney is a magical no strings attached financial benefactor sure, but if we're playing fantasy i'd prefer ghibli to be flourishing with a new generation of talent by themselves
 
Asking a company that's abandoned hand-drawn animation to take over a studio known for its beautiful hand-drawn animation can't possibly go wrong. Ghibli seems set on turning into a mausoleum for its two giants' legacies, anyways.

Hmmmm, I don't recall Disney doing this to Pixar or Marvel....
Maybe I live in an alternate dimension or something.

In this hypothetical situation I can only imagine John Lasseter would be highly involved and would prevent any Disney meddling. He LOVES ghibli and was a big part of the partnership Disney and Ghibli agreed on. I think he would respect what ghibli does and keep other execs out of it.
 
Remember when Disney in Japan made a series based on Stitch that changed the setting to Japan and the lead girl to a Japanese girl instead of Hawaii and Lilo. That's what this topic reminds me of.
 
I don't think pixar is a good example of low corporate oversight after all the sequels we're suddenly getting a few years after Disney acquired them. Although, I'd love Princess Mononoke 2....
 
If they bought it just to put money up for Takahata and Yonebayashi to make whatever films they desire, sure. That wouldn't make any return though.
 
Marvel enjoys low oversight from Disney because Marvel has yet to release a bomb. Once Marvel produce their first movie bomb (it's only a matter of time), I fully expect Disney to step in and take more hands on participation.
 
All I want at this point is a Studio Ghibli Complete Works Blu-Ray box set with absolutely everything in it, preferably shaped like a catbus. With Miyazaki and Takahata gone, that's the end of it for me.
 
There's still potential in some of the people who worked in the studio, but at this point I'd rather have the ones I care for try to make their name outside of Ghibli...

Meh, nothing wrong with sequels; Toy Story 3 was pretty boss.
Monsters University was also surprisingly good for what it was.

I think the only bad sequel Pixar produced under Disney was Cars 2, but the first one was pretty mediocre itself (and that was being developed before the buyout. The thing was basically J.Lasseter's baby) so it's not like Disney forced them to ruin some top-tier one-off film property.
 
If Ghibli isn't making movie anymore, then what's the difference? We might see cheap sequels and limited edition releases, but it's not like we would be losing anything.

i like pixar but i don't think there's anything really distinct about them, well now cg animation is commonplace anyway. their most notable thing was their commitment to quality and ehhhh

marvel are just action films. i guess they have the over-arching universe stuff but disney isn't going to object to a huge cross-marketing scheme, in fact it ties in to exactly what disney likes.

they're both already fine to be huge global successes, so there's no need to muddle. whereas ghibli films, well a lot of them, are about specific aspects of japanese history and culture in a way that's prohibitive for a company like disney that will want to maximize the marketable aspects of the charming characters and all ages adventure stories.
 
Only if Miyazaki + Takahata come out of retirement...maybe if Yonebayashi signed on.

I don't want Studio Ghibli without the greats that made it so venerated.
 
I think Disney would be relatively hands off as long as Miyazaki was at the studio in some capacity.

I bet they would start exerting their influence big time as soon as he's gone though.
 
Yes because then when Disney re-releases all the Ghibli movies all the "I only like this because its japanese" people will finally recognize how average those movies are.

I don't know about that (you're really underselling those two companies)
Both Marvel and Pixar are both pretty unique/distinct in their story-telling philosophies, and overall styles.
It would have been incredibly easy for Disney to meddle with those two entities and completely ruin them, but they didn't; Disney just let them do their thing.
I see the same thing happening in a hypothetical "Disney buys Ghibli" situation (Especially with John Lasseter around)

Though to be honest, I can't even see a post-Treasure Planet Disney being interested in Ghibli (modern or pre-new tens) anyways.
They're just not incredibly confident in traditionally/tradigitally animated feature-length films anymore, and that's Ghibli's forte.
 
Disney hasn't had anything to do with Ghibli for a while, have they?

The Wind Rises was a Touchstone release, and Princess Kaguya will be released by GKids...

Disney even gave GKids the theatrical rights to Ghibli's legacy works, including Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, etc.

What relationship does Disney even have with Ghibli anymore? Pretty sure Disney would not be interested in buying them.
 
Funding isn't Ghibli's problem. The problem is that after Miyazaki's retirement they're incapable of making movies that drive masses to theaters.

Miyazaki's movies weren't blockbusters because they were Ghibli films, it's because they were Hayao Miyazaki films. It doesn't matter how many amazing movies Yonebayashi, Goro Miyazaki etc. would make if people aren't interested in them. Takahata for instance directed many great Ghibli movies but none of them were big commercial hits like Totoro, Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc.

I don't think people who propose Disney to buy Ghibli realize what the studio's real problem is.

If there's one thing I've learned in life is that nothing lasts forever. And trying to keep the name, but not the people just sullys all that came before.

See Star Wars or any other "franchise" that could have ended on a high.

It was the Miyazaki Hayao studio. Nothing more.
 
Eventually it would go down the shitter, like whats going to happen to Marvel and Pixar when Disney want to become far more involved in the work they produce. Big corporations don't like rogue entities within their own shop.
 
As others have said, Ghibli has some pretty core talent/organisational issues, so tbh I'm not quite sure what value Disney would see in acquiring them to begin with.

This is also a major factor. The majority of the directors have either retired, are busy with other projects, or their films have been major bombs. Disney could buy the studio for their IPs, but only Nausicaa would benefit from additional films.

And like another Gaffer said, a studio who have abandoned hand drawn animation buying a predominately hand drawn studio is an awful idea.

Making animated movies isn't a one man show but Miyazaki movies were as close to that as you can possibly get.

He came up with the idea for the movie, drew all the storyboards and wrote the script, designed the main characters and main settings, checked through ALL the animation cells himself and made corrections, picked the voice actors, etc. Miyazaki's movies entered production when he was still making the storyboards aka nobody else knew what the ending would be like (or if the movie would make any sense at all). He was in control of every aspect of the movie production.

Unfortunately for Ghibli of today those were the only Ghibli movies that made tons of money.
