So...I wonder if Best Buy will get their money back now.

Lol. And HP can't even give them away with fall computers like we speculated earlier since there won't be support.

To the landfill they go, I guess.

You can stop right there, buddy. Nobody thinks Android tablets are dead or dying.

But people do contend the point that that they will surpass Apple tables in marketshare.

Many people in this thread expressed opinions that Android tablets situation is no better than TouchPad's which just got discontinued.

Again? It happened earlier in the thread too! That crazy HP!

Ah, sorry I scanned the last few pages and didn't see this referenced and given the link I put up was only 2 hours old I figured maybe it hadn't been posted yet.

I missed them, then. If so, they're insane.

I didn't see anyone say that so not sure you missed the "many"

Android tablets situation is bad but not nearly as dire as webOS. Well before the announcement. Clearly now.

I was looking at touch pads the other day and HP had a guy in the Best Buy to try and sell it to me. All he could say is that it was fully integrated with Facebook and Twitter.

I was buying this for my mother in her mid-50s. When I asked about specific apps he said he didn't know, but knew that he could get those apps on his iphone.

The OS was groundbreaking a few years ago, but really wasn't very user friendly and the adaptation to the pad seemed pretty awful.

In short, very glad I got my mom the Asus.

You did it wrong. Should have got her an iPad.

I do think that andriod tablets won't die but the appeal factor just isn't there. Everytime I read about an alternate tablet - the reviews always say something like "but yeah, the ipad works a lot better".

* disclaimer - happy ipad owner here

however I do own a HTC legend that I did give up on because it just ... wasn't for me. Went back to my iphone 3 (!)

Why do they put them in a landfill? That's bad for the environment. They should send them to a third world country for people there to use.

They can browse the internet while rocking their 2011 NBA Champion Heat baseball caps and t-shirts.

I dunno, some people seem to think Android tablet sales are a joke which is just as bad as dead or dying.

Android tablet sales are great.

Until you compare them to the iPad, at which point they become a joke.

Pretty much this.

They're fine in a vacuum. They're also fantastic compared to the PlayBook and others.

Just pretend the iPad doesn't exist and it's all good.

Don't worry when the average tablet price go down to $200 Android tablet will take over, Apple is not built for supporting low end and low margin products. Apple will be pushing the next $500 iDevice.

And if they keep the previous generation model as a cheap option as they have with the 3GS and are rumoured to be doing with the iPhone 4/4GS?

Doesn't matter, do you think the water downed 3GS (in a iPhone 4 skin) can compete with the unsubsidized $120 LG Optimus One or $100 ZTE Razer? People who traditionally spend only $100 on prepaid phones will always buy the cheaper one if they can save $20.

Plus they have missed their opportunity by 1 year, IMO. When Apple release the iPod mini/nano, they were smart enough to buy up the entire supply of solid state memory in the industry. What component can Apple buy up now for the iPhone mini?

So what's happening with all those sub $200 android tablets currently?

Oh that's right, they are all junk, and nobody is buying them because they are junk.

they said the same thing about the mp3 player market.

the iPad market is much closer to the old iPod market than the cell phone market. there is no guarantee that cheaper devices will relegate the ipad to niche marketshare (say, <20%)

yeah but ipods are no longer 500 bucks either.

No real market for tablets? iPad an anomaly that won't stay popular forever once the novelty wears off? A fad, if you will?

More like "not enough room in the market for anything besides the iPad and maybe an Android tablet." This was inevitably going to happen, the market couldn't support this thing, the Playbook, iPads and all the Android tablets.

the argument’s logic was still the same. mp3 players would be 20 bucks or 50 bucks and Apple would not be able to continue selling their “overpriced” 250 dollar mini or nano.

maybe there’s some future where a 200 dollar android tablet can offer the same hardware, same battery and similar software and media ecosystem and that could be enough to get people to ditch the ipad (assuming apple doesn’t attempt to sell, say, a 400 dollar ipad).

But the way things are looking now, with competition having a hard time meeting the ipad’s price - and a harder time meeting the ipad’s software lineup - I honestly don’t see it happening.

Yep, the current cheap tablets are junk. But they won't always be junk. Prices on good honeycomb tablets are dropping. Acer Iconias and Asus Transformers will be at $350 soon, then $299 once the next gen models come in. And those tablets are certainly NOT junk and people ARE buying them (especially the Transformer) even at $399. These Tegra tablets (which are VERY capable) will hit the sub $300 price point this year. They will likely be at $199 next year. That's when things will be interesting.

Tobor said:
That's exactly the point. As Apple continues to scale and iterate, you think the iPad will stay at $499 forever?
There's already been a cut in the UK. When the iPad launched, the low end model was £449 (I believe, it was certainly over £400), but when the iPad 2 launched the low end dropped to £399. They just need to run a little overlap and drop the iPad 2 prices by £50-£100 when the iPad 3 launches and they'll have a 'cheap' tablet on the market. Kinda like they still sell the 3GS alongside the 4.

Indeed. The iPad, like the iPod before it, has become the "Kleenex" of it's segment of the market.

3 years ago, you didn't buy "A MP3 Player" you were buying "An iPod". "iPod" had become synonymous with MP3 players.

The iPad has become the same way. And this is before the tablet market even had a chance to take off, unlike the iPod, which dominated an existent market.

I don't think that Tablets have really reached the right point in their lifecylce for 'budget' tablets to emerge, at least emerge as viable options. Before that happens tablet technology needs to reach a certain saturation point - you only need so much processor power and ram in a tablet before it becomes unnecessary. When that happens, those budget devices will be substantially more viable. And more importantly, you'll probably start seeing tablets coming into the market at a lower price.

I am not saying tablet prices will all drop one day to something more reasonable (although they might, I wouldn't be surprised if by next year this time, the standard is 399 or something) - but I am saying the ecosystem is still very very young, and I think that competition put their foot in their door early enough to prevent another iPod situation.

And remember, this time, it's not just a few companies working independently of each other trying to make a dent into the market, no, it's many many large companies - all of which who are in some way 'backed' by Google. And I think it's pretty safe to assume that microsoft is going to make a sincere effort with tablets with their Windows 8 OS (we've seen how tablet friendly that looks).

I do think that Apple has a pretty firm grip here, but I think even they realize that this isn't the same as the iPod situation, and they are trying to nip any threats in the bud.

Would one of these be worth it for 100 bucks lol

My mom might find it useful
Well, there's no document editing. As a web browsing / Kindle device? $100 seems about right.

How is compatibility with original Pre apps on Touchpad? I might but a Touchpad on the cheap if my old Pre apps work with it.

I already have an iPad 1 but the deal seeker in me says if a modern day (sort of well-equipped) tablet is on sale for sub $100...get it just because. ._.

I'm tempted to get one for $100. Does anyone know if it's easy to put anime avi files on this thing? Or reading manga

Yeah I'm getting one if they don't sell out in 5 minutes. No one seems to know when they will drop the price to $100/$150. Midnight EST? PST? 6AM?

I'll probably go for the 32gb for $150. 16gb is just not enough these days.

Man, I would totally grab one just for web browsing alone but I doubt it's gonna be worth the effort to F5 or line my way in for a unit. Probably gonna be a mob tomorrow.

Haha, my cousin was going to get a TouchPad and I told her to get a Galaxy, which she did. My work here is done.
