Android tablets situation is bad but not nearly as dire as webOS. Well before the announcement. Clearly now.
I was looking at touch pads the other day and HP had a guy in the Best Buy to try and sell it to me. All he could say is that it was fully integrated with Facebook and Twitter.
I was buying this for my mother in her mid-50s. When I asked about specific apps he said he didn't know, but knew that he could get those apps on his iphone.
The OS was groundbreaking a few years ago, but really wasn't very user friendly and the adaptation to the pad seemed pretty awful.
In short, very glad I got my mom the Asus.

I do think that andriod tablets won't die but the appeal factor just isn't there. Everytime I read about an alternate tablet - the reviews always say something like "but yeah, the ipad works a lot better".

however I do own a HTC legend that I did give up on because it just ... wasn't for me. Went back to my iphone 3 (!)

Plus they have missed their opportunity by 1 year, IMO. When Apple release the iPod mini/nano, they were smart enough to buy up the entire supply of solid state memory in the industry. What component can Apple buy up now for the iPhone mini?

There's already been a cut in the UK. When the iPad launched, the low end model was £449 (I believe, it was certainly over £400), but when the iPad 2 launched the low end dropped to £399. They just need to run a little overlap and drop the iPad 2 prices by £50-£100 when the iPad 3 launches and they'll have a 'cheap' tablet on the market. Mindshare has already reached critical mass.
I don't think that Tablets have really reached the right point in their lifecylce for 'budget' tablets to emerge, at least emerge as viable options. Before that happens tablet technology needs to reach a certain saturation point - you only need so much processor power and ram in a tablet before it becomes unnecessary. When that happens, those budget devices will be substantially more viable. And more importantly, you'll probably start seeing tablets coming into the market at a lower price.
I am not saying tablet prices will all drop one day to something more reasonable (although they might, I wouldn't be surprised if by next year this time, the standard is 399 or something) - but I am saying the ecosystem is still very very young, and I think that competition put their foot in their door early enough to prevent another iPod situation.
And remember, this time, it's not just a few companies working independently of each other trying to make a dent into the market, no, it's many many large companies - all of which who are in some way 'backed' by Google. And I think it's pretty safe to assume that microsoft is going to make a sincere effort with tablets with their Windows 8 OS (we've seen how tablet friendly that looks).
I do think that Apple has a pretty firm grip here, but I think even they realize that this isn't the same as the iPod situation, and they are trying to nip any threats in the bud.
