Wow Lair frame rate is all over the place

Same here - and I played countless hours of Duke3d multiplayer at 5-15fps (yea the game ran much better at 320x200 (~30) but being able to actually SEE things in distance (640x400 or higher) made 10x more difference then smoother fps for multiplayer).

I remember playing Wing Commander on my 286 at a blistering 1-5 fps and never complained once. It was still awesome.

Very funny. I eventually plan on getting a PS3 and all the other consoles, but even if I don't have one, I can still comment on it.
Of course you can, but maybe just in a way that's a little more convincing - we both know you aren't buying a PS3 anytime soon, whether or not Lair is at 60fps.

Judging by the current trends of Lair commentary on this forum, I think you would do GAF servers a great favour if you cancel that preorder.

i`d say i`ve been incredibly fair to every PS3 game i`ve bought and tried. I`ve pimped the good stuff, and i`ve been gentle on the stuff that was a bit lacking.

I don`t think i`ve been particularly harsh on the PS3 or it`s games and Lair will get the same treatment , as did the HS demo, as did Resistance, as did Mingol, etc...

As horribly baised as i am, when i buy a game that people are interested in - i always give as honest an opinion of it as i can given that there are purchasing decissions potentially being made. (I switch of the X chip for a post or two)

alot of people are freaking about over Euro preview code of this disc, which is behind the US already. No offense to TTP at all on this, I believe him and what he played, but i'll wait until US reviews of the final build start harping on framerate before i think about joining the ever wonderous GAF legions in killing a game based on PAL preview code...

but *gasp* how am i ever to become a true gaffer if i take that stance?

t's decent. Albeit frequently interrupted, missions are very hectic and drag you about between air and ground attacks. I like this. What I dont like is not actually understanding what's going on around me. For example. The mantas level. There are like 6 of those huge beasts slowly flying around. Dragons are attacking the mantas. They are coming from everywhere. You go defend a manta of your choice. Burn some dragons. Cut scene of a manta exploding somewhere. You go "uh?" for a sec but you are back in the game. Mess around you. "They are attacking us!". You go "Where?" "Who?" "How?". But you keep going and attack a random dragons squadron approaching a manta. You kill all of them. Manta is safe. Cut scene of a manta exploding somewhere. You go "uh?" for a sec but you are back in the game. Leading towarda another manta. You... Cut scene of a manta exploding somewhere. You go "uh? WTF?" for a sec but you are back in the game. So now you go searching for the next... Cut scene of a manta exploding somewhere. You go "uh? WTF? Seriously now" for a sec but you are back in the game. So, the mantas. Right. Let's see... Cut scene of a manta exploding somewhere. You go "uh? WTF? Seriously now what did I do wrong?" for a sec and then it's game over.

It can basically get very confusing a times. A kind of I-NEED-A-****ING-MAP degree of confusion if u get what I mean. You just have this arrow pointing you towards your objective, but in more open missions like the one I described you gotta look around yourself and decide where to go. But then again, this confusion is mostly due to the lack of visual clarity.

:lol Factor 5 have made the same game 5 times in a row, Roque Squadron I, Battle For Naboo, Rogue Squadron II and III and now Lair. Its a shame, because the really good bits are really, but the really bad bits have just stayed.

I think Factor 5 just need to break out of their habits and make a game that has absolutely no flying in it whatsoever.

Make another Turrican ffs.

All you people bitching about framerate are spoilt. Have you people never done ghetto PC gaming? Anything over 20 FPS is manna from heaven, and if the game never dips below 10 you have the settings too low.
Holy shit, that is one of the best posts I've seen in weeks

I've had my fair share of experiences with this since I'm the only framerate whore in my family and up until 6 to 6 and a half years ago I never owned a gaming PC but used either my dad's or brother's. I was at the mercy of people who felt that running a game with max settings was more important than ****ing playability. Oh, and my brother on consoles was a huge whiner when it comes to FPS

Same here. I played the game on a 486/66 in a small window at 320x200. The framerate bounced between 2-10 fps...

It's all of the shit you talk in between games that hurts your credibility.

Wow at all the people implying its ok for crap frame rates!

Surely 30FPS should be the minumum in the HD era?

I dont think its people saying its acceptable, more that with some there is a kind of double standard with ghetto pc gaming and consoles. I would be willing to play HL2 on my pc at below 30 but when it comes to a console it would just irritate me. I dont know why:D

TTP's discussion about framerate is not what is deterring me from buying this game; it is the game design flaws that Factor 5 has had for years. The lack of clear objectives, the disjointed flow of the game with confusing cut-scenes, and the telepathic communication between the dragonriders makes this game sound like nothing more than a screenshot generator for showing off your PS3.

like questioning whether games like Lair really are AAA quality for instance?

suck it up bitches - it`s not my fault i`m always right and you lot love the taste of hype! ;)

It is very odd that they finally get a chance to make something different, and they make the exact same f-ing game.

well there is always Heavenly Sword

Yeah, but it's coming out later because of Lair. So not only does Lair screw up the reviews and the experience that I wanted, but makes the wait for HS even more excruciating. Way to go Factor 5.

I used to play Quake 2 in software mode at 14fps no problem. Still enjoyed the hell out of that game in both single player and multi-player.
I played Quake 2 on a PowerVR PCX2 card and it was the game that convinced me to use mouse looking. See, the framerate was pretty unstable (despite using a 3D card), so I found that looking towards the floor at an angle would increase the framerate. By using mouse look, I could always look somewhat downwards and keep the framerate higher. I could still see ahead of me, but the upper areas would remain out of sight.

It's amazing how poor framerates were back in the day. 30 fps was a huge deal!

Shadow of the Collossus

the follow up to one great game, with a game that was also fantastic INSPITE of it`s frame rate.

If the frame rate was 30fps locked on Lair, would the game play be ANYWHERE near what is one of THE classic games of our time?

i have four words :

I`d say probably not.

I dunno - but I guess they are aiming for the epic battles as well. Music will be as good?

From my discussions the Lair frame rate is meant to be 'just about locked'

ball achingly awesome commentary as always Hairyass.

Just out of interest, do you disagree with what i said?

or do you expect lair to be SotC quality. I mean, they both have bad frame rates, so chances are it is huh?! ;)

Anyone else think that Sony have buried Lair in a pile of other game releases so that the interweb and podcasts are not fall of how crap it is which would badly reflect on the PS3 seeings as it was supposed to be a key title?

So if this game sells great we are sending the message to publishers that we want recycled gameplay and marketing bulletpoints over smoothness.

Buy it and you are part of the problem?

just out of curiosity what do you do for a living DC?

your credibility is lost due to the meltdowns, spins, damage control, borderline troll jokes you have when SONY and MS is involved. Not to mention the fact that you go out of your way to call out people like Wollan who behave in a much more subtle manner (relatively speaking). Your motorstorm review for example was a joke in all sense of the word.

Wollan does NOT behave as subtely.

He just doesn't attack as much as DCharlie, who seems to love to twist the titties of fanboys. He's an alright guy, but he needs to lay into Nintendo fanboys more.

After all, he is the guy that's said it wasn't particularly sporting to lay into soft targets. What 'harder' then a gaggle of Ninty fanboys, high off sales figures?

Yes! High-five!

exact same gaming experience for me back in the day; down to the switching between small windows and the 486/66

the fact that you believe Wollan is Subtle tells me a lot about you.

I mean really WTF?

It takes ALOT to take on Nintendo fans. A hard man. Not a soft one with sugar tits.

i`m sorry - i don`t see how being subtle with fud/bs makes someone any less of bs merchant. I like Wollan - i`m sure he`s a great guy - and some of his posts are very funny (see : Riverdance). I get called out, wollan gets called out, and the great cycle continues.

My Motorstorm review? I centered on the games faults being the AI and it`s poor balancing. Is that not accurate? Or am i screamingly in the minority? The fact you find it a joke though speaks volumes about what the real issue is here. Whilst i certainly don`t mind getting under peoples collars, the fact that you feel upset by an average-to-middling game getting an average-to-middling review speaks volumes.

I`m sorry, but as much as i do get under some of you guys collars most of it is because most sony fans are incapable of accepting that things aren`t going sonys way right now. In a years time , when the PS3 has a load of kick ass AAA+ game you`ll all look back and say "you know... Dcharlie was right! what were we thinking... Lair! lol ... Motorstorm!!? haha!" - it`s all part of the turgid one year launch cycle that plagues every launch, but for some reason Sony fans bend over backwards to make out that some average fare is AAA+ best line up ever level games.

it`s okay - i`ll accept apologies from you all later when it all finally dawns on you guys! ;)

but yes, the fact that my credibility is shot in some peoples eyes isn`t going to cause me any sleepless nights. As i said - i`ve been more than fair with the PS3 reviews and coverage (of which i`ve done MORE than my fair share of) and if i REALLY wanted to troll the ass out of the PS3 there have been more than enough opportunities to do so that i`ve passed up (or even in the case of HS recently took the pro-sony line)

so there you go.. that`s my semi-serious 2p`s worth. Now back to my trolling....
