Wreck-It Ralph |OT| I'm Gonna Wreck It!

In the art book there is a picture of a small brown bear wearing a green cap that looks exactly like this character. I'm sorry, but it isn't Link. Also, that turtle/frog thing is Frogger. I wish I could post a picture of the bear, but I think that would be against TOS.

I think you're thinking the bear from Crystal Castles. But his hat was red.

Watched this movie today. The previews and advertisements don't do the movie justice. I wasn't expecting that much, and this ended up being one of the best animated movies I have seen for a long time.

This is my favorite Disney movie to date. I teared up at several scenes, I'm not afraid to admit that.

Yeah when he wrecked the car and then when he started saying the bad guy oath as he was crashing down on the Mentos, both got me really good, I was ready for tears to drop, but I managed to contain it.

Saw this with my boys this morning. Fantastic movie, especially for those of us who grew up with video games (and are old enough to remember every year of the 80s).

Maybe they could somehow make the sequel involve home consoles.

Arcades dying and all that? :P

Yeah no, that's pushing it.

The weird thing about Sonic's appearance is that his arcade game looked like this:

and not the modern designs featured in the movie. Oh well.

BTW you could also say this:

But I highly doubt that as well.

Missing the tail if nothing else.

Also there were turtles all over the place in the movie. Seems odd to think that they'd feature exactly one random Pokemon multiple times who isn't even one of the most popular ones.

Pokeymans don't have arcade releases.

Movie was good until Vanellope appeared and then she ruined it. Paperman however was awesome.

I disagree.

saw it, loved it!
I liked the odes to classic arcade characters.

There are so many cameo characters in the background that you need multiple viewings to catch them all.

Pepper from Burger Time handing a burger patty to Q*bert LOL
(easy to miss)

Just got back from seeing this w/ my fiancé and her friend. We all loved it, best movie I've seen in a very long time, so much fun!

the new issue of Entertainment Weekly talks about all the hoops the Producers had to go through to get the rights cleared to the characters. Apparently when they got Bowser and the Sega characters-the two companies each started insisting that their characters should be larger than the others-and it escalated to the point of having to have a sit down between the two groups and work out a middle ground.

(Also Dig Dug was originally supposed to be the homeless character-but his creator didn't like that idea-so it ended up going to Q-Bert)

Disney Animation has posted some brief clips from the movie on YouTube. Note: these contain very mild spoilers. :)

Ralph and Vanellope Make a Deal - 1:08

I love the facial animation in the above scene. Ralph's expressions are so subtle and the look on Vanellope's face when she's holding her arm up is perfect.

Ralph's Gone Turbo - 0:34

Q*bert's exposition scene. Also, you can see a bit of how the 8-bit characters move in the beginning of this one. Those jerky movements totally sell it.

Wily was in the original version, but got cut in favor of Robotnik in the end. Who knows why.

Actually IIRC they were both in the film in early production stages, but for whatever reason he was pulled out. Probably had something to do with Capcom licensing or whatever.

paperman was a gorgeous short. loved the animation and direction.

wreck-it-ralph felt like a movie made by 80s arcade dwellers who stopped playing video games right before street fighter ii came out. you have sonic give a psa, and don't start it with 'sonic sez' or end it with 'and that's... no good!'? come on!

i genuinely did not see the plot twist coming at the end. that was a surprise.

the movie itself wasn't bad, but i thought sarah silverman was fucking terrible.

probably has to do with capcom killing the mega man franchise.

In interviews, the director Rich Moore said they wrote the script using whatever licensed characters they thought would work best/be funniest without even knowing if they could use them. Some characters, like Dr. Wiley apparently, had to be replaced because they couldn't secure or afford the rights.

So they could get the rights for Ryu, Ken, Chun li, M. Bison and Zangief from Capcom but not Mega Man or Dr. Wily. Yeah, oookay.

I was just guessing about Dr. Wily. It could be they just changed their minds. I don't know the specifics of each character.

Both my fiancé and I loved the movie. Really great. Haven't liked something this much since Tangled. Still think Tangled is better by a thin hair.

I thought Wily was axed because Capcom didn't like the way the model turned out or something. Might have just been speculation or something.

The two parts that had me laughing the hardest:

1)
Kano ripping Zombie's heart out. I did not see that coming. It's a PG movie! Yeah, he's a zombie and there was no blood or anything, but still!

2)
The Konami code. I don't know if I've ever laughed that hard at a movie before. My friends even commented after the movie that it sounded like I was dying during that part.

Overall, a wonderful movie on its own merits without relying entirely on the video game gags, but the video game fanservice pushed it over the top into instant classic territory for me.

Minus points for no Metroid references, though. BETTER BE IN THE SEQUEL!

This movie's being done by the same guys who did Chicken Little right? I'll be honest, while I wouldn't say I was the biggest fan of CL, the writing in that movie was a helluva lot funnier than I thought it would be.

Is WIR like that?

edit: I hate the trailer, btw. Though a good chunk of that is cause of that stupid song.

Saw the movie earlier tonight, and certainly liked it. The major characters were all presented very well, Felix Jr. probably turning out to be my favorite which came as a surprise to me. Loved the references, of course, found most of the jokes to be done very well, and even managed to tear up at a moment that I didn't expect to.

I did walk away feeling like it had some issues and inconsistencies, though. I didn't personally mind that they spent so much time in Sugar Rush, that wasn't the problem for me so much as the fact that the actual pacing of the storyline seemed to really hit a snag there. It's even more apparent when you think about the fact that the bulk of the story is meant to take place during the course of a single night. You get straight to the point in the Fix-It Felix Jr setting and Hero's Duty, then Sugar Rush comes around and they show off so many more locations, characters, all of the mythos about how games work, some action, romance, bonding...it's like they hit a point in the film where they weren't ready to go to the conclusion yet, so they just started tossing in whatever themes they could come up with to flesh everyone out.

Then there are some of the odd contradictions within the rules of the video game universe that they set up. Things like
glitched characters being unable to leave their games when other characters can. They even manage to continue existing in Game Central Station even after their machines are unplugged and they're separated from the code that defines their existence.
I already saw it mentioned earlier in the thread how it's odd that
Vanellope is still able to glitch around even after her regular code is restored
and while I get the "be yourself" message involved there, it didn't make sense to me.

Maybe it's something that they'd expand upon in a potential sequel, but the cause and effect of the rules about games being out of order and character death set up a very interesting dynamic that is never explored. So...
if a game character dies outside of their game, then they're dead forever and can't regenerate. And if that happens to be an important character who dies, then they can't show up anymore, and the game will be declared broken and eventually unplugged, like what would have happened to Fix-It if after Ralph left. This basically means that any character death during game-jumping not only leads to permanent death for that character, but also the eventual death of their entire game-world. Those are some high stakes, and it's something that occurred to me during Ralph's attempt at self-sacrifice near the end. In wanting to save Sugar Rush, he damn near doomed Fix-It Felix Jr.!

I think that's enough out of me on the movie itself for now. I'll just close by saying I loved Paperman's animation style, even if the thought of
getting kidnapped by sentient paper planes
kind of frightens me.

It's the same studio that did Chicken Little but not sure about the personnel. A lot has changed since then.

I saw the movie today and I thought it was good as well. I did get a little bit bored during the middle of the movie but after
Ralph goes back to Sugar Rush
, the movie was great. Loved all the characters too, expecially Calhoun and Felix Jr. Oh and did anyone else see the
Teenage Mutant Turtle arcade cabinet
at the end of the movie? The little kid in me smiled when I saw that.

I thought this movie was awful. I got suckered in thinking it would be like Toy Story meets Roger Rabbit with videogame characters, but the movie literally had more of a focus on candy than it did on videogames. If you walked into this movie 20 minutes late, you could literally sit through the entire thing without even realizing that it was supposed to be videogame-themed.

The first 20 minutes were promising, but if they were able to license all those characters, I wonder why they didn't get to play more of a role in the story. It quickly degenerated into ham fisted, predictable shlock with its completely throwaway story and characters.

Oh, and they tease a mario appearance early on, stoking everyone's expectations for a last-minute gamechanger cameo only to not deliver anything whatsoever? Not fucking cool.

No they didn't tease a Mario game changer cameo they just said his name. The video game setting is strong throughout. Roger Rabbit was a detective story with real actors mixed with animation how did you ever get that idea? Basically your opinion is wrong.

It sounds like you went in expecting the film to be an endless reel of Family Guy-style video game gags and references but ended up with an actual movie instead.

Well, he did have an issue with the story and characters as well and he has every right to his opinion. Lets not try to be too hostile to dissenting views, given that the overall sentiment on the movie in this thread is highly positive.

Haha don't get so defensive there buddy. Roger Rabbit featured cameos by different characters from otherwise competing animation companies, much like the videogame characters in Wreck It Ralph, so that's where the comparison comes from. I'm not sure why you're convinced that any movie that shares a similarity with Roger Rabbit must necessarily be a detective story with live actors mixed with cartoons, because that's a dumb assumption to make.

And yes they do tease a mario appearance.
OH HEY GUYS THATS MARIO AT THE DOOR, HES THE MOST FAMOUS MOST BUSY GUY IN THE WHOLE ARCADE AND HES HERE RIGHT NOW! Then Mario never shows up.
You really weren't disappointed by that at all?

Basically, you can't seem to handle the fact that some guy on the internet didn't enjoy your candy-themed kids movie.

EDIT: Basically, pretty much everyone in this thread can't seem to handle the fact that some guy on the internet didn't enjoy your candy-themed kids movie.

Whatever, gaf.

"This movie didn't unfold as I expected. Therefore it sucks."

Strawman.

I clearly stated that I found the plot to be predictable and boring. In fact, that's pretty much the complete opposite of it "not unfolding as I expected".

"This person disagrees with me therefore I will put words in his mouth to make myself feel superior."

I typically go into Disney animated movies expecting them to not be kids' movies.

Never said I didn't expect it to be a kids movie, nor did I say that being a kids movie was in any way to its detriment. Some kids movies, like Toy Story, I really enjoy. This one I did not.

Get over it.
