Killing off one of your most recognizable black characters does seem like a bad move. I've been around the DCU a while, and it's fair to say they have not used John Stewart particularly well, which is really weird considering his exposure in the cartoon.

And Barry Allen. Take all the boring out in one swipe.

I say put Barbara Gordon back in the Oracle position (doesn't need to be crippled though) too.

Geoff Johns has no idea how to use Stewart. It is terrible, especially considering comic Stewart done right is more interesting than the one in the cartoon (aside from that obvious advantage of that sweet voice).

^See this is the kinda shit that ticks me off about the fanbase. Why would you want a 'good guy' character dead?

I got nothing against hot Amanda Waller but I do prefer her original design more.

I don't want Barry did, just Wally back. They had to literally blow up the universe to make Barry relevant again, on top of giving him a mommy complex. That is does no one any good.

Then let Barry retire or such and he goes on to live his life, there's no need to kill off a character, who within the universe he is in, does good and helps people just because he's boring. It seems hypocritical to me.
For that matter, let Jordan marry Carol and they both retire from the space corps, they've been in enough already @_@.

"Stewart is one of DC's most recognizable African-American characters, which makes it somewhat surprising that he be marked for death in light of the steps the publisher has taken to diversify its line with the New 52, adding Cyborg to the Justice League, creating a gay Alan Scott in "Earth 2" and launching the New 52 with several titles starring black characters. Stewart is also arguably the character most associated with the Green Lantern franchise among the non-comics reading public, having been the face of the Corps for the popular Justice League cartoons. He's so associated with the franchise, in fact, that when Ryan Reynolds was announced as the lead in Warner Bros. live action film, many people wondered why a white actor had been cast as a character who they thought of as black."
Lol wut? That didn't happen. I wasn't able to find a single news items related to this when I just googled the topic.

I saw "Walking Dead" rule in the title and I thought, "Wow, DC is going to let dead characters stay dead now? Cool, finally some guts!"

Nope, just people upset over fav character getting killed. Shit, I'd feel better if people resign over Slutfire and hot Amanda Waller, to be honest.

She's not a slut, she's empowered...lol.

Yeah, but it usually applies to all minorities. Meet the newest Green Lantern. He is Muslim and his origin story involves blowing up a bridge.

I refuse to believe this is real. When the hell did this happen?

Hey, at least Jon Stewart is known. Poor Kyle - only appeared as a "what if" in DC cartoons. :/

editorial strikes again!

Now that I think about it, it'd be pretty funny if some guy was using yellow to block Green Lantern's power so he just takes out his gun and shoots him.

It works out close to that.

Baz has actually been interesting IMO. I thought the same stuff when all I saw was a cover of a GL with a gun, but having read it it came across a lot better in context.

why does his mask look like a ski mask.

why does he have a gun.

why does he need a glowing tattoo of Arabic writing visible on his arm.

why is he so angry.

why are his eyes red.

why is he pointing the gun at the reader.

does he want to kill the reader.

is he a bad guy.

the only thing i know about Green Lantern is that Ryan Reynolds movie. it wasnt that bad, but it wasnt that good either. the ending was the worst part, the big bad gets dropped like a chump, that did piss me off.

also the movie was so bad it got the new cartoon cancelled lol.

no one was buying the movie tie in toys, so Green Lantern toys became poison for stores.

no toy sales = no cartoon.

I doubt anyone would write about it, but it was all over twitter.
This isn't really territory I want to wade into (I usually try to stay 20 miles away from discussions about race) but this just seems like made up history to me. One can easily find dozens of articles about Idris Elba's casting in Thor and talk of Donald Glover in Spider-Man but I was not able to find a single mention of complaints about Ryan Reynolds being cast by people who thought of Green Lantern as a black character.

Kyle Raynor for life!

in terms of good story for GLs it goes Kyle>John>Guy(who is awesome all the time too)>the rest of GLs>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(not hal jordan, he sucks too much to be considered good)

John over Guy? John over most other Lanterns? Nope. Nope. Nopenopenopenope.

John Stewart was cool (extreme emphasis on was), until that motherfucker went post-2006 Cena levels of stale. Bench that motherfucker.

EDIT: Bench, not kill. At least until someone can bring him back up.

Man, what the hell is going on over at DC lately? I'll admit, I was a die hard DC fanboy in the 90s growing up. I was like 6 when Death of Superman came out and that alone started my love for comics. And then all the Batman graphics novels, dude has an endless list of good books. So I have a slightly stronger connection to DC characters. Of course I mellowed out and now try everything, especially not from the Big 2.

But Marvel is seriously on a better path. Yes, they have boring events right now. (Does anyone really care about Age of Ultron?) but otherwise they're on the ball. Marvel Now is just destroying a lot of the stuff I'm seeing at DC.

Why even kill off Stewart? It isn't the type of news that would garner much media attention, people don't really have that much interest in Green Lantern stuff as much as they do Superman or Batman. Damian Wayne isn't exactly well known to the general american populace, but Robin dying got some national attention. People know Robin, they don't know how many Green Lanterns Earth has.

And yes, there are too many Earth lanterns. But killing him off seems like a pointless and desperate ploy. Nobody cares too much, and he is one of the better known lanterns for the generation of people that grew up with the Justice League tv series, so some writer is going to bring him back.

He's a former car thief, who's morality is supposed to be a mix of Hal Jordan and Sinestro. I like the guy, but fuck it if they have to kill off someone else just to establish him. "Oh, I don't know what to do with this guy....kill him." It's not a surprise that I would like, want, or forgive. So lets watch DC fuck up more shit.

I seriously don't understand why he has a gun.

Because he's the only intelligent Green Lantern? Every second issue has their rings about to run out of power. "Oh no, now I'm helpless!" This guy is the only one smart enough to bring a backup piece.

What exactly is a gun supposed to do if your charge runs out? You might as well carry a sharp stick

For a new black guy to stay on, the old black guy must die.

This is painfully obvious from the Walking Dead show.

T-Dawg is alive for an insanely long amount of time. The second they befriend a black prisoner? Gone.

Then a few episodes later the show introduces Tyrese? See ya later barely characterized black prisoner dude!

Yeah, I couldn't help thinking that regarding the Walking Dead.

A Muslim with a tattoo?

On the cover it looks like it could be a projection of the ring, but in an actual panel someone posted earlier, it looks like a standard tattoo.

If it is a permanent tattoo, that further brings into question his costume design. Why leave your arms sleeveless, yet hide the majority of your face when you have a giant, easily recognizable tattoo across your entire forearm?

John is probably my least favorite Earth lantern (well, I haven't been keeping up so I don't know about the new guy) but this is still bullshit.

Killing off a character that is amazing like John Stewart should be a crime punishable by killing off Hal Jordan, who is useless and a crappy character.
HAHAHAHA! John Stewart amazing... LOL

holy fuck this this thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis

John Stewart IS the Green Lantern.

no he isn't, not even close.

All the Hal Jordan hate is hilarious. When did this start?

when shrill annoying kids started pining for their Kyle...

^ Guy is boss.

Only if it's Hal Jordan being hit upside the head with a baseball bat. Then no.

silence you.

And Barry Allen. Take all the boring out in one swipe.

I do hope you realize that Wally was been written teh exact same way as Barry for the last ten years....

he was the same in the cartoons, "I'M A MARINE!" the only time Stewart was interesting was in the 70s and during mosaic.

I'm so glad I don't read DC. That GL with a gun is the dumbest thing ever.

Why not give Supes a bunch of Katana swords for fuck's sake.

please don't judge a damn book by it's cover.

It funny around the Green Lantern movie people were all like "I thought he was a black dude?". So John does have some mindshare. I would say more than Hal.

John was the Green Lantern in all DC cartoons for a good number of years when I was growing up. Most of my friends, prior to the movie, would likely have said that Green Lantern is black.

Characters die all the time only to come back later. I don't see the big deal. Superman died, came back. Lost track how many times the xmen died.
