WTF am I watching? A show called Just for Laughs came on...

So much of this humor relies on the fact that you believe that they actually pulled off these pranks, but there's so many camera angles and close ups that it seems obvious that it's entirely staged and everyone is an actor.

From the camera work of the video in the OP, I find it hard to believe these aren't all completely staged.

Oops, beaten.

some (very few) of their pranks that i've seen on TV are pure cruelty. next time i go on montreal i'mma be on edge and blame every odd occurrence on just for laughs gags.

I worked as a PA for this show one Summer. Fun times. Some of the gags were great, but there are so many... at one point there's a lack of creativity and originality. And some are indeed pretty cruel!

The Just For Laughs comedy festival is a separate thing entirely and usually has great shows. I saw Jimmy Carr and a few others this year. Missed Chappelle unfortunately.

Have seen them in nearly every country I have travelled, in hotels.

Way prefer them than the "social experiments" and other Youtuber sexual harassment garbage.

Mind Blown

The wacky sounds are what sell it for me. *Cue slide whistle*

How do the people of Montreal not think "Oh, I must be on that Just for Laughs show" every time someone tries to prank them?

Best show ever. Plus most universal show that anyone can watch.

Was out the other day and it was on in a shop I was at. Was in the shop with a Vietnamese family, a Greek man and myself. We could barley communicate between each other, but all laughing at the show.

For that reason it's great. Always the best thing to watch on a plane.

I've seen this stuff in airports and stuff. It's a generational thing. My dad would be in stitches.

But yeah, some of the gags are truly ridiculously bad.

It's not staged, a girl I knew got pranked by them and another friend of mine watched them prank people for an entire day from his office at work. Like someone said, its harmless stuff, and it's made that way so that it can be exported anywhere on Earth. The creators are making so much money, it's insane!

You do realize that comedy can exist without constant references to sex, right?

In a Reddit ama one f the actors said that the camera is hidden in a big box. When the gag is over, they shoot some close ups of the actors and cut them into the skit.

I love this show. As with anything like this of course it's going to be hit and miss, but it's all light hearted fun.

Just For Laughs is one of the best prank shows ever. Some of my favorites.

Senile Cashier

Women in Pink at Mall

Granpa Parks a Car

Surveyor Red Flag

Baby Stroller Bike Lock

ive seen probably over a thousand of their pranks and more often than not they have gold.

edit:

Thats another thing i appreciate about JFL. Very rarely are the pranks mean spirited.

Not staged. My sister got stupidly caught by one of them.

They do have some editing, though. My sister told me it was an old lady that wanted her to mail something.

Haven't looked at the video but is it that show with no dialogue, but clips of staged Candid Camera-like pranks with someone smiling at the camera every five minutes?

I used to get those posted on Facebook for years and wondered where they came from.

C'mon, the first one in this clip is damn good:

I'd totally like to be in on that one

That woman at the beginning demonstrating the sketch is called Nadja, and she was also part of a reality tv show where 5 wannabe amateur chefs strangers invite the participants to their house during the week for a 3 course meal that they made, take turns every day of the week, and then they are scored on the soirée as whole at the end. It's called "Un souper presque parfait" (A Almost Perfect Supper I guess it would be in english)

The girl had this amazing meat sauce that I still use after more than 3 years now. I havn't found another recipe yet better than hers. Cost a lot to do, but oh so worth it. It's the perfect meat sauce.

I could translate if anyone is interested.

Everytime I see her on this lame show (which I gotta say is damn funny sometimes), I need to praise her sauce, it's that good haha.

Our local airline plays this show on domestic flights that still have shared screens.
Its torture.

The pranks themselves seem fine, but It's like the producers don't realize the funny thing are the reactions. Why can't I hear what people are saying?

the reason why this show is lame is because it is mute.

The reason why it is mute is because all the gags are shot in Montreal with pranksters and participants reacting mostly in French

so for television purposes to have it broadcasted towards the rest of Canada, the show is muted.

Which is ridiculous because Canadians have no excuses for not being bilingual

Just for Laughs is the biggest comedy festival in the world, and it's been running for more than 30 years.

This is just a tv show made for kids and old people. Lighten up OP.

It would be in French. Whitout hearing what is being said, the TV show can be showed anywhere in the world.

it's shown around the world though not just in other parts of canada

they're harmless good spirited pranks, may seem "lame" to some people but i like that they're not making fun of people or doing gross things

I have never heard anyone having strong feels about JFL Gags, good or bad. I mean I generally like it but it's like How It's Made in terms of just a show that exists (which I also like and I think comes from Quebec).

All the closeups are b roll shots they shoot after doing the pranks. They don't actually get close ups during a real prank, they are shot separately just so you can explain the concept to the audience better. Pretty the only live shots are when the victims are in the shot.

This is good to know, sometimes I think it's all staged.

My favorite are the scary ones though:

This used to air in America on ABC for a couple summers a few years back.

My favorite was the German Shepherd driving the mail truck by himself. Classic.

I remember living in Montreal and watching a couple get pranked. Definitely not a staged thing-- just edited afterwards, as expected.

Harmless candid camera-esque entertainment.

I used to like these kinds of shows but ever since the genocide in Rwanda I am really just bored by them. I think it was around that time.
