What's the negative part of this iPhone they should have written about?

It's not open enough! AT&T sucks! Camera is only 5MP! No OLED! No USB port! Jobs is a CUNT!

Pretty much every review points out that AT&T is shit, Pogue calls them "Apple's ball and chain" :lol

is verizon really that much better in metro areas?

where i live, verizon service is butthole in comparison to at&t service.

Dude, that's nothing. My little Canon shot HD video, typically a 2 minute video was twice, or three times that size.

That's nothing, 1 hour of truly uncompressed 1080p video is about 675GB!

That's what these bad boys are for (~$15,000)!

Where I live (Boulder, CO), AT&T is really really bad, bordering on criminal. The neighborhood I live in doesn't even get more than 2 bars when using 3G, and I drop calls constantly. Verizon, which my friend uses, is flawless.

Verizon kinda seems to do best at both extremes: both fairly rural areas, and the largest metropolitan areas in the country. While AT&T seems to do better in the big, but not that large cities.

FWIW, so far the reviews seem to be indicating the new antenna design does help quite a bit with signal quality... I'm expecting a full 4/5 bar signal in my area.

They all suck, just in different places and ways.

that's my line of reasoning. all of my dropped call issues i have when i'm home on my iphone 3g are a result of the phone, not the service. whenever i'm in metropolitan areas, however, i do notice many more "call failed" messages and an overall 3g speed decrease.

ATT and iPhone...reminds me of this:

No hate, guy is a playa for landing her, much respect...still...

Since the phone appears to be trickling out to people finally, here are two things that I hope get answered soon:

1) If you jailbreak your iPhone 4 and use the app that tricks the phone into thinking its using wifi for 3G access, can you use Facetime over 3G?

2) If you pop your micro sim card out and put it in an iPad 3G, can you use your data plan on the iPad?

Hopefully someone here can answer that soon.

FaceTime barely works over WiFi... heaven knows what it'd be like over 3G.

Yep, and sadly I don't see this changing anytime soon. MAYBE all the new towers going up for 4g coverage will help things, but I'm not holding my breath. Problem is only gonna get worse before it gets better IMO. This decade is gonna SUCK in terms of smart phone issues with cell phone providers.

Your wifi is still constrained to an Internet connection. Do we know at what bandwidth is the minimum requirement and at what is the optimal?

Did Gizmodo get a model for review?

Their Fed EX delivery truck with their review unit has been delayed… indefinitely.

Unfortunately not! They’re amassing user impressions and offering $20 iTunes gift cards in exchange.

Another retina comparison: http://images.worldofapple.com/2010/06/dsc05850-e1277250526465.jpg

goddamn, you can read the letters running along the outer edge of the contacts icon. That’s just obscene (and completely invisible to the naked eye, but I love the attention to detail)

i'm eagerly awaiting other phone manufacturers to start using high DPI displays so that this 'retina' shit goes away. fast.

haha, I get a bit of an Microsoft "we are now in the HD Era" vibe from it

(not that high resolution and DPI displays are a bad thing obviously, but marketing speak is still pretty funny)

Personally, I'm waiting for blast processing to come back

so i have off thursday and friday from work.. should I just go get this thing or wait it out... I dont really care about it now, and would like to ebay my current phone before taking the plunge, but I know reading this thread will make me go grab this .. .must not click this thread again... .

I'm kinda getting tired of the super zoom and scale into the screen to show the difference. Clearly we know the screen is higher res, but come on, nobody sees it that close or that big so it's not really telling and clearly looking at our existing iPhones it doesn't look that pixelated like the super zoom pics show.

God damn it! I just read AT&T's press release about NOT having handsets in stores on the 24th for sale even having been told TWICE that they would. This fucking pisses me off to no end.

It's shown like that because... how else can you show the difference ?

Your monitor isn't 300dpi, so in leui of showing a giant oversized picture, just show a zoomed in, cropped version.

What the fuck? My local AT&T rep said they'd be opening at 7 on the 24th and selling to walk-ins for sure. Are you sure you're reading said PR correctly?

I understand why they do it, but I find it hard to get excited over it when my screen doesn't look like a pixelated mess like the zoomed in shots show. To me it feels like its being over dramatic in the difference. It's sorta like getting super excited over the 3DS through a picture which can't convey what the 3D will be like. I'm curious and I want a 3DS, but I can't rave about the 3D till I see it.

That's what you get for trusting anyone but Apple to actually have their shit together on launch day. I did an AT&T store on day 1 of the iPhone 1G launch; never again.

I'm sure once you see one in the flesh you will say "Oh wow I see the difference", but you will have to put up with technical comparisons until then...

(or, find a massive resolution photo, scale it to 100% of actual size and print it out at 300+ dpi!)

Those fuckers can't get their shit straight to save their life. Here's the god-damn press release: http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=18030

What's worse is that there isn't an Apple store with 100 miles of where I live. My only options are Walmart, Best Buy or Radio Shack, all of which will probably have none for sale. This fucking blows.

I didn't have much of a choice, Gary. There's no Apple store where I live and Apple's online store was broke on the 15th. Now, I have no idea what I'm going to do.
