I didn't have much of a choice, Gary. There's no Apple store where I live and Apple's online store was broke on the 15th. Now, I have no idea what I'm going to do.
Yeah that sucks. After my past experiences and what I've heard anecdotally I'd never trust a third-party retailer on a big launch like this. Given the popularity of this phone, which seems high by even iPhone standards, I am expecting some serious meltdown stories come Thursday...

I just learned there is a newly opened Apple store 2 hours away. I guess I could drive up there Wednesday night and camp out. However, it's a mall store so I don't know where to go. I guess I'll call them tomorrow. Seems safer than trying the local Walmart or Best Buy.

Oh snap. After going to AT&T store today, my order status is back to "processing" after being at attention. Store rep says my phone is backordered, but I hope to god this is a good sign my order went through.

That's actually not as bad as I was fearing.

Might go ahead and move my wife's 3G to iOS4.
it IS worse than that.

everything is slow, including all animations. switching pages, opening and closing apps, rotating into coverflow view...everything is slow.

it feel like your discreet GPU on your laptop/desktop was switched out for an integrated GPU.

while still trying to play Half Life 2. "sluggish" doesn't begin to describe it.

I'm probably going to downgrade to 3.1.2 until I'm ready to sell, then put jailbroken/unlocked iOS4 back on it.

yea, I have iOS4 on my jailbroken 3G.

lags like hell man. this phone is gone ASAP. everything from animations to startup to opening apps is slower.
See, I'm having a very different experience. I'm coming from 3.1.3 jailbroken to iOS4 jailbroken (wallpapers enabled, no multitasking). And it runs far better than it did when I was on 3.x. Markedly so, actually.

How much slower can it be though? The phone already lags like hell. Going to be hard to notice another second or two when the phone already takes forever to do anything.

What I hear is that without jailbreak, the iPhone 3G is snappier with iOS4. I mean comparing with 3G with iOS4 + JB.

My girl has a 3G but she needs jailbreak to use it with our carrier. So she's not updating.

When I first updated in my iPhone 3G to iOS4, it updated, but obviously hadn't finished. It didn't appear in the Devices list, and was REALLY slow to operate. I'm talking 3-4 seconds just to change a page of apps. It was obviously still doing something, as I gave it 5 minutes and it then decided to connect and sync. After it synced, it has been ok.

Home page animations are really smooth and much better, but opening settings and some apps are much laggier. I guess they want to improve general performance at the cost of an opening lag. Gives the illusion of smoothness during operation at least.

For some reason his 3G is significantly slower than mine. The settings demo wasn't even close, when I sync my button press with his, my 4 is actually slightly faster than his 3.1.3. My camera is roughly the same as his in 3.1.3. Not sure what could cause that difference.
Glad I'm the only one that's
not
lying.

On a separate note, iPhone 4 OT? I think it deserves a fresh one.

Those fuckers can't get their shit straight to save their life. Here's the god-damn press release: http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=18030

What's worse is that there isn't an Apple store with 100 miles of where I live. My only options are Walmart, Best Buy or Radio Shack, all of which will probably have none for sale. This fucking blows.

their releasing this statement last minute, i'd place the blame on apple being dodgy with allocation numbers over parroting the whole "it's all at&t's fault!"

Woot! My AT&T premier order for the 32Gb came off of backorder! PROGRESS!!!

The only thing that's left on backorder is my Apple Care warranty! :lol

I think it's been pretty obvious for a while that Apple, AT&T, Best Buy, & Radio Shack would have no extra units except for pre-orders on day 1. Some employees might hope, but until today, I don't think anyone knew the allocations.

Think about it, Wal-Mart got miniscule allocations last years as the roll out of iPhones being sold wasn't complete (and in some stores, it still isn't) and they've added Radio Shack.

They allowed the online pre-orders which by all accounts was the most heavily used ordering method.

Radio Shack has 6,500 locations, Wal-Mart has 4,300 US locations, so that's 10k stores. Imagine they got even 20 units apiece. That's 200k units. (Which they won't get).

The pre-orders were 10 times higher than the 3GS. Thinking you'd get one day one from stores that allowed pre-orders was insane once the pre-order numbers came out. Likely the employee was hoping it would be like last year just with the system crashing...

Eh? Are you blinded by apple? Third party retailers have been doing gaming launches fine for years. They have it easy. Apple announces the date, they make a deal with the store, give stores units on the date, the stores sell them. If there's a delay, it's not the third parties fault at all. Apple probably decided to allocate units to online and instote preorders. it makes sense for them to be first serve. As far as preorders over a website, yes it's at&ts fault for not having better servers.

I can only go by my own experience, and I've always had a flawless experience with big launches at Apple stores and nothing but a nightmare whenever I've gone anywhere else.

Everybody should know this by now, the lion share of iPhones are going to go to directly to Apple Stores/Apple website. It's been like that since the 1st gen iPhone in 2007.

It's not even worth trying any other store when they'll get like ten phones tops which are spread across two models. And they often try to screw everyone over by forcing you to buy accessories with it or some crap. I made the mistake of going to an AT&T store for the first iPhone, never again.

I believe that, but, because Apple Store the highest priority to recieve units.

But you said you can't trust third party retailers to have their shit together either. The ones that did preorders, since it was in person, gave people confirmations right then. Now it's up to apple to give them units. If there's a delay, it's not their fault. They are shipment wait mode like you.

I've not done any kind of jailbreaking, and iOS4 is utter dogshit on my 3G. Seriously, it's terrible, and at times makes the phone almost unusable.

well the wal mart here will have like 10 iphones on thursday morning. Got nothing to lose, guess i'll go check it out that morning and see if theres a line.

So, if you want to 'wipe' your phone at this point, you will have to move to iOS4? Because doing a restore in iTunes now will load the new OS.

I'm kinda stuck where I need to wipe this thing to factory in prep for tomorrow, but wasn't sure about moving to iOS4.

Interesting...I'll check there first. I don't suppose rednecks will be waiting in line to buy iphone4's.

Walt Mossberg's review of the iPhone 4 sucked. I'm really starting to hate that guy so maybe I'm biased.

Engadget's review was a lot more even-keeled and fair.

You underestimate rednecks. Especially when you can eBay them for a decent profit.

are you saying rednecks don't like nice phones? who else do you think the ifart app was made for? :lol

I went to Walmart for the Xbox 360 release. The line was INSANE. I don't know what the fuck to do :\

Fuck...you win. =(

If you have a 24hr walmart in the area I would definitely try it. Since they are selling them (I assume) at midnight you could hover in the area and see what is going on. If there are a lot of people just head over to another place.

I was up there for the 360 launch since I knew I had one at gamestop in the morning to check out the madness and it was insane. I live in a small town and there was 40+ people there. The store said they had less than 10 but those people could give a fuck. Almost all of them metioned eBay as the reason to be there.

i honestly doubt they're selling them at 12 AM as the connection center (that's how wal-mart processes phone purchases/upgrades) isn't open 24 hours. find out the local store's connection center hours and act accordingly.
