is there any way for me to change my unlimited data plan to the 200mb plan when I buy this? or is that something i have to do when my actual contract expires?

I'm sure they'll be more than happy to take you off that unlimited plan. :lol

Not sure I like that they allow toolbars. Those are the worst WORST feature of extensions because people abuse them and you end up with a hundred toolbars and no space to view the page because people are stupid and will install a Yahoo! bar and a Norton bar and so on and so on. Google had it right. Only a single button allowed on the one toolbar in the UI. I will never install an extension with a toolbar if there's no way to hide it without losing functionality.

At least they allow menu item additions and access to web content. I can't wait to see extensions start popping up. Where is the repository going to be? There has to be a page dedicated to listing all the available ones.

I’m fine with it. Most good devs won’t add shitty toolbars all over the place but the flexibility is there for something that may actually require it.

as for the repository, you’ll be able to get there from the Extensions tab in preferences or from a website that will go up later this summer.

We need this chart with 2-year contract pricing added.
that would be tough, as there are several potential combinations of contracts for each phone and carrier. at least 2 different options for voice, data, and texting + family plan variants. even

When is the Keynote going to go up already???????? I want to watch it!! Goddammit, they're probably editing out the funny stuff. Dammit. That would suck.

Why is iMovie on the iPhone? I thought these devices were consumption devices and not producer devices. Who would want to edit a movie on an iPhone or iPad?

so you can upload to youtube, etc. while out and about

They shouldn't even be an option imo.

Extensions have moved on. We don't need these things hanging off the browser like a pair of fuzzy dice.

I agree. My wife uses firefox on her pc and there is a norton bar, a bookmark bar, and a yahoo bar. Drives me nuts. Firefox on my Mac is minimal, but I LOVE how minimal chrome is.

video is transferred via wifi but it still needs the phone line for the voice communication and for connecting the call in the first place.

presumably, other apps, like skype, can tap into the camera and use it for their apps too.
Where'd you find all the info about the underlying tech?

Oh my god, they brought back the address bar progress bar.
!!!!

Actually, I don't get it.

My progress bar loads halfway, then it switches to the rotating cog on the refresh icon. What gives?

no..my 3g is the first real phone i've ever had, so i don't have a whole lotta experience with changing plans.
They'll typically let you move to a more expensive plan but not a cheaper one.

considering how vocal and anal the Mac development and blogging community is, I don’t think there’ll be a surplus of ugly, bloated extensions.

That shit won’t fly on the platform.

I could see myself using a couple light extensions here and there and I don’t expect to install a single toolbar. but I don’t mind that the option is there.

Aren’t we glad Apple is allowing developers more options these days? :lol

I was referring to losing your unlimited option. Saving money I understand though, just remember you most likely won't be able to get unlimited data again.

It did that for me once but now it's always using the progress bar, so I dunno. Maybe quit Safari and try again?

common sense?

it starts up via a traditional phone call. so… you need the cell network. that part was shown in their demo.

but the video only works over wifi, so that means that the video data isn’t being transferred over the phone connection.

edit: there’s lots of complicated technical stuff that gets this working seamlessly and I have no idea how all that interoperates. All I said was that it needs both connections and that video data is transferred over wifi. that’s not really “underlying” tech at all. it’s pretty superficial, actually.

double edit: and I said “presumably” for the possible skype implementation. apple said they’re publishing specs so it’s assumed other apps can use it in time

Well, put like that it makes sense. And I agree that the Mac dev community wouldn't dirty it up too much.

Safari on my iPod touch isn't rendering apostrophes correctly for some reason. :/

Edit: fixed now after quitting safari and rebooting.

ya, I'll take 15 bucks off my monthly bill any way I can. I only really use like 150mb a month, anyways.

After installing iTunes 9.2 it went through and processed rework thumbnails, Grid view seems to display quicker now… I guess that was what it was doing?

Safari Extensions Gallery.
When you’re ready to share your Safari Extensions, you can submit them to the Safari Extensions Gallery, which will open later this summer. The Safari Extensions Gallery will give users an easy place to find your extensions and download them from your website.
So do they have to be approved by Apple or is this something optional?

Hey Apple, it would be okay if you bring back tabs on top for Safari. Really, it would. Just make it an option, and call it a day.

(Also, while testing out Safari 5, I'm realizing I might never be able to switch back from Chrome: I'm just too damn used to using the address bar as a Google search box.)

Meh. I hardly ever use the address bar anyway. Even if I'm typing a URL, I type it into the search box, lol.

HOLY CRAP @ iPhone 4 screens.

Also, I spoke too soon, I saw the blue bar + rotating cog again.

Yeah, I might even switch back to Safari if they did this, thb..

So I'm getting a new phone this summer. I'm currently using a shitty Verizon flip-phone. Should I get a smartphone or the new iPhone?

I need a phone with:
-A good keyboard
-A web browser
-A good camera (3-5 MP)
-Good battery life
-GPS navigation

I don't really need apps and the phone should be as cheap as possible ($100 or less including plan). I might also switch providers. Verizon doesn't work well around my area but I'll be moving to Austin, TX in August. I heard AT&T works well there. Any help?

Pretty sure it's stylized to look like that. Notice they're giving the stuff more depth and shadows and less of a sharp look and feel. Especially in the battery which looks like it's chiseled. And the bars that look like they're recessed.

Sweet mother of god. THAT is the screen resolution?

Hearing about it is one thing. Seeing it is another. That puts every phone out there to shame. (I still love you, Nokia 5800.)
dunno. i'm ambivalent at the crush of pixels on the screen. playing with a coworker's EVO was marvelous with that screen size. it's not as pixel dense as the iphone, but still works well enough.
