WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

Sadface. That's, believe it or not, one of my most wanted features. :(

The app you're using has to be open or else it doesn't work, yes?

all alarm apps need to be open to work. but you can hit the sleep/lock button on top to shut off the screen and they still work. (I don;t think iOS 4 will change this from what we've seen of the APIs)

I happen to use Awaken for my alarm clock needs but there's lots of choice for those who want to wake up to music playlists instead of just a ringtone.

but we DONT know if shopping on apple.com will allow someone to keep their current plan. I seem to be the only one actually stressing out about this.

I'm curious about that as well. I am hoping they will have the functionality to do it, because I work on launch day and would rather just pre-order it because of that. Hopefully we will at least know when pre-orders become available. I assume it is part of the purchase process and not the activation process.

Doesn't that use up a lot of battery?

I contacted apple store support via chat. and I let the guy know and asked if he could pass the word on to add an option to "keep existing plan" because otherwise we lose our unlimited plan by being forced to pick a different one he said he would. Best online chat support I have ever seen. He talked like a human and not a robot. He even asked me what i learned from my trip to att, like if they were pre ordering.

Otherwise I will be going to pre order at the store :(

And for the person curious about where to pre order, just ship it to your house if they say you are gonna get it the 24th versus shipping somewhere that may get it on the 25th.

I charge my phone overnight, everynight, so I wouldn't know :(

It probably isn't a MASSIVE drain, but it's probably noticeable.

Definitely reserving my phone through AT&T first thing in the morning on the 15th.

I can't wait to have a phone that doesn't take forever to do anything. 3G was great for its time, but that time has long passed. Also really looking forward to the better battery. The screen, improved camera and HD video are just extras for me (though very appreciated).

Now I just need Vaja to get me a cover for this thing...

You're not wrong, but I'm pointing out "this is why I said 'illegal' in my other post".

It doesn't sound like you disagree. The moment they legitly offer tethering, anyone using MyWi is basically well in the wrong and almost certainly in the "illegal" department, aren't they?

Just because you don't think you have to pay for it, doesn't mean it's not illegal.

Does that mean any app that lets you send a text message for free is illegal too since AT&T charges for them?

does iphone have a free turn by turn gps like google nav or bing nav?
they have cheap ones, but I haven't found a good free one. Currently Navigon has a REALLY good deal going on. The US split into 3 regions (east, west, central) and the first region from the app store is $15 right now with the other two regions being $10 each as in app purchases. Makes all of the US only $35 or if you don't travel much outside of your region only $15. Otherwise MotionX GPS Drive is only $2.99 and comes with 30 days of voice guided turn by turn. $25/year in-app purchase after that. Navigon is a pre-loaded GPS. MotionX is network based, though for drives through bad coverage areas you can "pre-drive" the route first which will force it to cache all of the map tiles.

others can offer insight into this.

Those are always interesting to me, actually.

I'm guessing that they turn a blind eye to that stuff because it's so specific and not really a text message replacement. Both people need to be using that app in order for it to work...so it's not sending texts at all as much as it's sending IMs in a really shitty way.

Just get an AIM client and you're already there.

If there was an app that would let you send and receive SMSs in a way that was free, that'd be a pretty big no-no, though. Any of them do that?

Ya, but in theory you can send out a text and still receive a text to your normal number. You just cut your costs in half because normally you have to pay for sending and receiving. I don't see it as being any different than tethering if you want to be technical about it. You're either bypassing service that you would normally pay for and its illegal or its not.

I don't think so, and it's likely the reason the Google Voice app was rejected.

I don't think they're actually sending SMS, though. That would be the big differentiator in my mind.

My understanding of how they work is that you're only able to send/receive from other people who have the same app, and they aren't actually sending SMS, but data over the network (which just so happens to be text) like an IM client.

Those Text Unlimited programs are just shitty IM clients as far as I can tell. :lol

A friend of mine always sends texts to my phone from his ipod, so not all of them are app to app.

Is he jailbroken, though, or using an app off the app store?

It's an app from the appstore, I wanna say it's called TextFree? And when I send him texts, a notification pops up. He has a consistent address I can send the texts to as well, a string of numbers @ textfree.com (or whatever the app's name is).

If I add family members into my family plan, will they be able to get the iphone 4 at the full discounted price? 16gb for $199 etc

nm you can

from the macrumors q&a it looks like you'll only be able to grab one new iphone 4 per houshold. I only say that because you said members (plural). Looks like the only way you'll be able to grab more than one iphone 4 is if you're upgrading existing lines, in which case all eligible phones can be upgraded.

Very weird.

I guess they get around it by not having the phone itself be the receiver or sender of the text, but rather channel data to their server which then sends an SMS to an actual number. The SMS from the receiver then goes to the app people's end and is translated back to data to be consumed by the app.

...that's some dodgy shit, but I guess it's allowed. :lol

Okay, I think this is bullshit. My entire family is moving over to AT&T for this phone, all of us planning on purchasing the iPhone4. So you're saying that AT&T is going to deny a family from Verizon willing to shell out a ton of money for both a new AT&T contract and three new iPhones? There's no way they deny that.

One per line in stores it seems. The one per household only applies to online orders I think.

Call up your AT&T representative and ask. Go to a store and haggle. Even when their policy says otherwise they have been know to bend when they see the $igns

Yeah, kinda weird it is allowed :lol. I mean, functionally, it works just as well as if you used carrier texting, though not as "clean" I guess. I could see plenty of people on a budget using that as opposed to paying ATT, but I guess they're not concerned.

I got the 3GS at launch, according to the text I got from AT&T:

"You may select equipment at our full retail pricing. An upgrade may be available on 02/20/2011"

FFFUUUUUU... so how much does this mean I'll have to pay if I renew my two-year contract with iPhone 4 on June 24?

I think all your Eli money would basically get sapped away with this purchase... :lol

Full retail is something like $699 US.

Right, but surely I won't have to pay that much if I'm topping up my two-year contract. $699 is what you pay for the phone without any contract.

I love how it's basically the most loyal customers who buy the new phone every year who get fucked the most on pricing.

I'm pretty sure you would have to pay that crazy amount, since as far as AT&T is concerned, you're not honoring your original subsidized iPhone contract.

You could probably cancel your current contract entirely (incurring an early termination fee) and start a new one for cheaper, since you'd be getting the iPhone at the new contract price.

...maybe?

Tell em' you're Gary Whitta, and you will totally bash AT&T in your next script unless they help you out.

This doesn't make any sense. I bought a 3GS the same day you did, and I qualify for the full upgrade. There's something else beyond date they're looking at.

A potential buyer wants me to jailbreak my 3GS in order for him to use his T mobile service with it. Is this feasible?
Depends on your firmware and baseband. If you are on 3.1.3 with latest baseband, you cannot currently unlock. Although the jailbreak community is expecting an unlock to be released once 4.0 is released.

Ok, so I have no idea how I can go about getting an iPhone 4. Never had an iPhone in my life and I've never been with AT&T. What all do they consider when I sign up for a contract with them? I want/need to know my chances of getting one =]

I missed the conversation, to this point may not be relevant, but the alarm clock app built into iPhones works without having to be "open". when you save alarms in their "on" state, they will go off whether you're using the app at the time or not.

It’s relevant in that the built in alarm app only uses ringtones and can’t use your iPod library. the 3rd party apps can.

to answer an earlier question, I hook up the iPhone to an ihome alarm so it charges the battery and doesn’t die out. of course, it wouldn’t die out overnight anyway as all the iPhone is doing is playing music and it can do that for around 30 hours straight.

Ugh, alright then. :(

What about NDrive USA? They really need to get Google or Bing maps with free turn-by-turn though.
I've messed around with N-Drive USA. For three bucks it's not bad. It has turn by turn voice directions and does a good job of recalculating when you make a different turn. Also it will allow you to play your music through the app and will just lower the music volume when it gives you a direction.

So yeah I just called AT&T and they said since my upgrade eligibility doesn't kick in until Feb 2011 I'd have to pay the full retail price for the phone even if I extended the contract? What the fuck? How then can other people who got the 3GS on the same day as me be eligible for a full upgrade?

Yeah, that's odd. I called them today as well, and was told I'd have to only pay 400 for an early upgrade. I only got the phone last November.
