XB1 Elite Controller ($150)

The price is ridiculous based on what? Do you know what the components cost? What R&D cost for this thing? Perhaps you could share those numbers with us? Or what kind of return Microsoft is expecting over the 1-5 years if this thing makes it that long.

It's ridiculous to you.

It isn't to me.

The price of any product is only what the market will bear.

C'mon, Valve controller.
Tons of R&D, new tech and a far smaller company then Microsoft.

Can you manage an explanation without shitting on others this time?

This thread is so strange... If this was the first product to exist in this market maybe I would understand it.

This is like going to a thread about the 980 TI and having people saying "Who would spend 700 on a graphics card?"

Or a thread about the K95 and seeing people say "Who would spend 200 on a keyboard?"

The enthusiast market exists guys, sorry that some of you just finding that out now...

Gotta agree. Some people spend 300+ on keyboards. (HHKB)

At times like this, it really is a reflection of the Neogaf user base.

Either this site is full of children with no income, people living at the poverty line, or those who will never earn more than the minimum wage.

The amount of people crying over a $150 is eye opening.

Guess what? This isn't a requirement. It's apparently a premium product and somewhat of a premium price.

And if by some chance, a $150 is enough to make you question your life and how this purchase might put you out on the street, you're in the wrong hobby and this elite controller isn't for you.

C'mon now, you can't understand why paying 3x more for something that will have relatively little effect for the majority of gamers might get a scoff from most people? It's like spending $250 on a very good graphics card, or spending $750 on a top of the line graphics card. For the majority of enthusiasts, $250 will still be pretty good.

Please explain to me why this is worth $150.

It's not. Having worked for a manufacturer of MS's 360 accessory hardware I'm certain it costs nowhere close to that for components. I'd legit be surprised if it cost more than 15% of that price to build based on what their old stuff cost. But in the end your product's worth what people are willing to pay for it. Company's gotta make profit.

This isn't a custom controller. It's a mass-produced controller.

You don't sell things are cheaply as you possibly can, that's not how economics works.

You price according to the market. The people who would buy this are the people who are currently buying those custom controllers.

Arthur gies is that you?

Please explain to me why this is worth $150.

Oh I have no idea. I'm not rushing out to buy this thing.

What I can say is that the controller is my direct connection to games. It's how I interact with every game I play. So if this thing is really good, then yes, it is worth $150 if it makes the experience of playing every game better.

There's a difference between not being able to afford something, and thinking economically. The fact of the matter is that most people on GAF could probably afford to buy this controller, but why should they when there are more important things out there that their hard-earned money could be better spent on?

That was kind of my point. The "more important things" concept when making purchases is what you shouldn't have to think about when it comes to these kinds of products.

It's not like they are replacing the standard controller with this more expensive one.

Not every product is for every person.

How do you feel about wearing a 10K watch? That's what I mean.

Lol this is great.

Please explain to me why this is worth $150.

In the case of a controller, it would be worth it simply by lasting more than 3 times as long as a standard controller.

My controllers last forever, but I know some people who beat the shit out of them.

In mountain biking, I have no issues with a 100 dollar wheel. Whereas some guys of the same weight who ride the same trail need to fork out over twice as much for heavy duty wheels.

Of course, the real money is made from the guys who want to look like they need heavy-duty gear.

People spend hundreds of dollars per year on little toys to display on their bookshelf. $150 for a controller that should last years is not out of the question.

It's garbage that they locked the button remapping behind the price tag, though.

edit: apparently button remapping is physically impossible on the old controllers?

Its just a bunch of buzzwords and people are comparing this to other mod sites when microsoft has the ability to mass produce while they dont. Stupid price and the only ones who will buy it thinking it will increase their k/d surprised it does not come with gunnars glasses.

I think they made it to stop the complaints. There're always people who say "This D-Pad is shit" While everyone else likes it. Now they can tell you buy the custom one if you want a different d-pad/sticks.

Will buy one when they flop at retail and drop to $90ish. They look cool as hell.

Being that each one comes with a carrying case, I would be surprised if it should up at any other stores other than Best Buy or Gamestop or equivalent game/electronics retailers. I don't expect Walmart or Target to carry such a niche product.

Button remapping is enabled in the controller hardware

Sweeping, pathetic generalizations. Love it.

In all seriousness, why do you think $150 is a fair price for this?
ignoring your previous post where you insulted the GAF community.

Not gonna pay $150 for a controller that I'm mostly interested in because it might fix the bumpers from the regular controller. Also DS4 works on the PC perfectly so I'll pass.

I think the comment that this controller is priced at HALF THE PRICE of the ENTIRE console is what makes this price insane.

I think that's what people in the thread are saying when they express that they believe $150 is too expensive for this controller. I don't believe anyone is making claims saying nobody will buy it, or the market does not exist for such a controller at this price.

They have the revision of the normal controller already rolling out that has a bumper tweak.

Already have been using a Scuf One for 1.5 years and never regretted it. After having that level of control, never having to take my thumbs off the left or right stick to hit the ABXY buttons feels amazing especially in FPS. Going back to a controller without paddles always feels like I'm playing something archaic lol

I am interested how this one feels since the paddles are done very differently than the scuf style.

I usually map the reload buttons to Right Bumper so I don't have to take my thumb off right stick to reload, but having the paddles for all the buttons for jump and the like must take some time to get used to, but also feel "freeing" at the same time.

edit: I'm interested in how heavy the controller will be, since the paddles and stick shafts will be steel

Looks good and i think the price is justified if the materials are top notch. It's an alternative controller so i don't get the complains about price. If 3rd party producers can match it and be cheaper then yeah. But i don't see anything comparable.
If quality is good, people pay for it. Look how ppl bu 100 $ headseat from Sony (Gold) although you can get others cheaper.

That just tells me the other devices are overpriced. Why does this controller, and similar ones, cost $150?

For every 9,999 people who are satisfied with the standard controller, there is 1 who is willing to pay more for something better.

Now how much is that one very special person willing to pay?

Please explain to me why this is worth $150.

My mind is legit blown. I get it from M$'s perspective because this enhances the value of the Xbox and provides a revenue stream Sony/Nintendo wish they had. Obviously this is isn't for me but this could work for someone else.

Can't wait for the BoM numbers to leak. Someone estimated the costs to be $20. I'd laugh if that were the case. Does this controller's battery last longer or hold any key advantages over the traditional XOne controller?

I spend 150$ on plastic figurines. This is probably more a collector thing than any advantage in gaming.

Yeah, let's blame the consumers. Regardless of how much money you make, dumb pricing strategies are still dumb. I make more than enough, I still won't buy it.

Even that said, you shouldn't be grouping people together, it makes you look dumb as hell.
